For an entire day, Li Chunbo and his team remained in the bunker. The news of the North Sea Fleet's annihilation spread silently throughout the Tianjin defense forces, just as Zhang Shengli had predicted. The source of the information was untraceable, but most people clearly found it hard to believe. After all, how could nearly a hundred warships be so easily wiped out?
Moreover, the North Sea Fleet was the only naval defense force in the Yellow Sea. If they were completely destroyed, wouldn't all coastal cities north of Shanghai become the enemy's primary targets for attack? So why had they not seen any signs of battle?
Li Chunbo merely smiled lightly at these comments, choosing not to refute or mock them. In fact, according to his calculations, the enemy navy should currently be attacking port cities like Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai, and Dalian. These cities shared a common characteristic: they formed a semi-encirclement around Bohai. If the enemy could not suppress the garrison forces in these cities, their fleet entering Bohai would be akin to walking into a trap set by our forces.
Without the entire North Sea Fleet, our military would certainly struggle to hold the frontline against enemy warships and naval air power for long. Eventually, we would have to retreat from the front lines, making an enemy attack on Tianjin merely a matter of time.
However, Li Chunbo truly did not expect the enemy's swift actions and boldness. By the morning of the third day, aircraft from the Enemy Navy Seventh Fleet appeared along the Tianjin coast, engaging in combat with our Air Force and attempting to strike at the bunkers.
Yet they quickly retreated under our efficient air defense. Li Chunbo knew what was coming next, but he felt no fear—only a sense of unwillingness.
As expected, it wasn't long before enemy ship-launched missiles flew toward a row of coastal defense bunkers at high speed. Despite desperate interceptions by our air defense units, three high-yield missiles struck the Allied Forces' bunkers.
These bunkers were hastily constructed semi-permanent defensive structures that had strong resistance against ordinary shells but offered little protection against missiles carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives; they relied solely on interception by air defense units.
Adjacent bunkers locked down emergency access points as all troops prepared for real combat with the enemy fleet.
By evening, the enemy fleet finally came into view for the soldiers.
After our missile forces' attack, the enemy fleet had indeed suffered some losses; however, upon seeing that countless ships were approaching, every soldier on the frontline in Coastal Defense couldn't help but ask themselves, "Can we really hold them off?"
The large warships cruised at a distance of over five kilometers from shore, but more landing ships accelerated toward Tianjin. The coastal new area where Li Chunbo and his team were stationed became their primary target as nearly a hundred landing ships charged toward them.
As the ramps of these landing ships were lowered onto the port, gunfire erupted from rows of bunkers. Soldiers hidden in various bunkers and high buildings unleashed a fierce attack with rifles, sniper rifles, machine guns, grenades, and rocket launchers against the main battle tanks and armored vehicles rushing up from aboard the landing ships.
Despite the loud commotion, the effectiveness was lacking. After all, our standard weapon was the rifle, not a portable anti-tank missile, and rifles had almost negligible impact against their main battle tanks and armored vehicles. The only effective firepower came from those hidden rocket launchers and grenades amidst the gunfire.
After losing more than a dozen armored vehicles in an instant, the enemy learned quickly. They positioned their main battle tanks at the front of each line, with the rest of the armored vehicles following closely behind. This way, direct-fire rocket launchers could hardly target the more vulnerable armored personnel carriers.
Seeing that the rocket launcher attacks were thwarted, those portable missiles that had not yet fired also launched. Dozens of missiles soared into the sky and, after flying for a while, swiftly struck the armored vehicles behind the main battle tanks.
Due to the vertical strike, while the attack speed was quick, some were intercepted by enemy forces. Moreover, these weapons could not be fired from within the bunker; most were likely hidden in various buildings as units. Once the enemy locked onto these targets, the main battle tanks opened fire mercilessly on those high-rise buildings.
The enemy knew that we could not use civilians as human shields, so they naturally would not violate wartime regulations by launching devastating strikes against unarmed civilians.
Gradually, as the enemy convoy advanced, the distance between their front-line main battle tanks and our bunker grew smaller. Li Chunbo could even see the automated machine guns mounted on the enemy's main battle tanks.
Suddenly, Li Chunbo saw one of the enemy's main battle tanks accelerate rapidly, closing in to less than fifty meters from the bunker before immediately firing at the shooting port…
The massive tremor nearly knocked Li Chunbo off his feet. Amidst a ringing in his ears, he barely heard the company commander shouting, "Quick! Lock down the isolation door completely!"
Li Chunbo instinctively rushed toward the isolation door and quickly pulled down a steel plate on it, securing all eight fixed panels.
Tiger spat on the ground and grimly said, "Damn it! These bastards are ruthless!"
Lion Brother hesitated as he looked at the company commander and asked, "If we lock down the isolation door completely, what if there are still survivors next door?"
White Wolf shook his head. "Look at the design of each bunker. Such a large enclosed space combined with their earlier high-explosive shells; even we were shaken badly through this isolation door. Do you really think there could be survivors?"
Big Dog immediately crouched beside the shooting port and looked outside in astonishment. "They... those bastards have started doing this?"
The members of the Company gathered around the firing ports, watching as enemy Main Battle Tanks charged toward their bunker one after another. Each bunker was being breached in succession, and fear was etched on the faces of nearly everyone present.
The Company Commander furrowed his brow, realizing that they had no portable anti-tank missiles in their unit. The only significant firepower they possessed were two single-man mortars and three individual rocket launchers. The rocket launchers could only target the front of the enemy tanks, which were armored enough to shrug off such attacks. The mortars were capable of hitting the weak spots on top of the tanks, but there was hardly any space for them to fire from within the bunker.
Suddenly, the Company Commander noticed that almost all the soldiers were silently looking at him. Only he had the authority to order their withdrawal from this position. Doing so would be a blatant act of defiance against Superior Orders, but he knew that these bunkers were merely a temporary measure to delay the enemy's advance; they would inevitably be overrun.
"Stop dawdling! Use the rocket launchers to blow their tracks!" Li Chunbo shouted at the Firepower Squad Leader.
The Firepower Squad Leader snapped out of his daze and immediately ordered an attack on the tank directly in front of them.
Three rocket launchers fired, their trails of flame streaking toward the underside of the Main Battle Tank. A massive explosion erupted beneath it, completely destroying both tracks. However, the tank was still less than a hundred meters from the bunker and immediately opened fire on the firing port.
"B——" A tremendous explosion shook above the firing port, but many shrapnel pieces still managed to penetrate inside, causing heavy casualties among the soldiers huddled at that port.
"Good! At this distance, they can't shoot accurately," Li Chunbo said excitedly. "We need to find a way to intercept the remaining tanks before they get closer."
White Wolf shook his head in disagreement. "No, there's still an element of luck involved. If we're not careful, one might hit us directly next time! So we should—"
"B…" Another shell came crashing through the firing port. This time, however, it was a smaller explosion; it seemed they had used armor-piercing rounds in a moment of panic without switching ammunition types.
The Company Commander leaned against the wall, watching White Wolf with a dark expression, as if he were staring at a disobedient black crow.
"Withdraw! But do not leave the battlefield!" he whispered to the thirty or so remaining soldiers. "Break into smaller units based on Combat Groups and enter the city before receiving orders from headquarters. Prepare for urban combat!"
The soldiers looked at the Company Commander in disbelief. He roared back at them, "Move! Do you want to stay here and get blown up?"
"B..." Another shell exploded above the firing port. However, since this shell was a high-explosive round and the firing port had already been hit by an armor-piercing round once, the violent explosion caused the concrete to shatter. A massive chunk of stone came crashing down onto the Company Commander.
"Company Commander!!!" Li Chunbo rushed towards the Company Commander but was pulled back by Lion Brother. The enormous stone struck the Company Commander directly, splattering bright red blood all over Li Chunbo.
"Move!" Tiger and Lion Brother dragged Li Chunbo away, leading everyone through the emergency passage located at the back of the bunker. The enemy had not yet fully committed to taking the bunker complex, so they still had time to rush from the port area into the city.
Along the way, Li Chunbo saw soldiers like them, all retreating from those bunkers.
At that moment, Chen Rui and others' radios crackled to life. Instead of using a radio station, they communicated directly via radio in plain language, making it easy for enemy intelligence to intercept their messages.
"All defensive troops in the bunkers, evacuate to the city within one minute! All defensive troops in the bunkers, evacuate to the city within one minute! Over!"
Upon hearing this voice, everyone quickened their pace. Once the bunkers were abandoned, enemy soldiers could disembark from their armored personnel carriers and engage them in urban combat. This meant that the danger they faced would increase dramatically, and everyone needed to find good defensive positions to halt the enemy's advance.
About a minute later, a tremendous explosion erupted behind them. A surge of flames followed by rows of mushroom clouds began to rise. Without needing to look back, everyone knew what had happened—the first line of defense had fallen.
In just two moments of engagement, the first line of defense was lost.
