Li Chunbo returned to Milan Century Garden, encountering citizens rushing towards Dongjiang Road along the way. Many requested his escort, but he had no time to spare; his only thought was to reach Dongting Road South Section quickly and meet up with Tiger.
As he burst through the district gate, he found Dongting Road surprisingly devoid of enemies and gunfire, a silence that felt unsettling to Li Chunbo.
He tightened his grip on the sniper rifle in his hands. He knew it was less effective than a standard rifle in urban combat, but it provided him with a sense of security.
Li Chunbo moved slowly along the edge of Dongting Road, heading south. As he reached the end of Third Avenue, he spotted numerous corpses. After a brief glance, he forced himself to look away.
Whether it was the gruesome sight of the bodies or the fact that they were dressed in enemy uniforms, he had no reason to linger on them.
The presence of these corpses indicated that Tiger had been engaged in fierce battles with these enemy Sergeants while retreating southward. It was possible that he had already worn down this group of enemy Sergeants before withdrawing westward from Jintang Road.
A different possibility began to form in Li Chunbo's mind. Rationality told him that this scenario was far more plausible than his earlier thoughts. After all, the enemy wasn't foolish; they would recognize the significant disparity in strength and wouldn't pursue relentlessly. Such a pursuit would only expose their rear units to artillery fire covering Tiger's position.
While it seemed extravagant to use grenades against an ordinary officer during wartime, Li Chunbo repeatedly reminded himself that it was very likely. After all, Tiger and his team were highly skilled tacticians. In urban warfare, ordinary soldiers without overwhelming artillery support or numerical superiority would find it extremely difficult to take them down.
Perhaps the enemy had realized how formidable this soldier was and resorted to fire support. In such a case, anyone would be doomed; after all, no amount of human effort could bridge that gap.
As Li Chunbo desperately tried to convince himself that such a scenario was impossible, he crouched low and rushed forward. His anxious state caused his previously rhythmic footsteps to become frantic, increasing the noise of his movements.
Suddenly, he heard the sound of a bullet being chambered—though faint, it was unmistakably clear. Li Chunbo immediately halted and crouched against a wall, raising his sniper rifle to aim ahead.
Before long, a standard Mandarin voice called out from ahead, "Friendlies! Lower your weapon and don't fire accidentally."
Hearing Chinese words brought immediate relief to Li Chunbo. He lowered the muzzle of his rifle but kept his finger on the trigger.
Moments later, a middle-aged man wearing a khaki sports jacket appeared before him, holding a domestically produced standard rifle. The sight of him in sportswear with a military rifle felt odd to Li Chunbo; however, the man exuded unmistakable military traits: calmness, determination, and steady movement.
Since the man wasn't in uniform, Li Chunbo refrained from saluting. In times of war, who knew if two or three enemy Sergeants might suddenly appear behind him? Such formalities were minimized on the battlefield.
"Hello. Where did you get your weapon?" Although Li Chunbo didn't doubt the man's civilian status, he remained sensitive about the origin of the standard rifle in his hands. After all, firearm regulations in China had always been exceptionally strict; even homemade guns were hard to come by.
The man looked at Li Chunbo with an unusual expression. After a moment of observation, Li Chunbo realized it was one of disbelief, which irritated him involuntarily.
The man noticed the unfriendly gaze directed at him by Li Chunbo and immediately smiled. "I found it. In this chaotic time, weapons and equipment are everywhere. It's not just our standard rifles; even the enemy's squad machine guns are easy to get. If we could make it to the Bunker Group in Lingang, we might even find some anti-tank weapons."
Li Chunbo didn't question the man's words, as they were indeed true. However, what concerned him was that ordinary civilians were risking everything to evacuate from the combat zone. How could this man move so naturally through such a dangerous area? The enemy's sergeants seemed to be nothing to him; it took either great courage or foolishness.
Suddenly, gunfire erupted ahead of Li Chunbo, bullets striking the concrete wall beside him and hitting the car in front. He narrowly escaped unharmed.
The middle-aged man suddenly grabbed Li Chunbo and ran north. "We can't go north!" Li Chunbo exclaimed urgently. "At this time, the enemy has likely breached the defenses on Jingmen Avenue and is advancing toward Dongjiang Road! We won't make it!"
The man frowned and asked, "What about Third Avenue and Second Avenue? Are there enemy forces there too? Where did they get so many troops? Did they send down all the soldiers from the Aircraft Carrier?"
Li Chunbo knew the man was joking, but he replied seriously, "Third Avenue was breached by the enemy before, but I didn't see any enemy forces just now. The same goes for Second Avenue. However, since someone is chasing you, they will definitely call in Allied Forces to hunt us down. Just because there weren't any enemies on Third Avenue or Second Avenue earlier doesn't mean there won't be once we enter! And in such an open street, no matter how fast we run, we'll be easy targets!"
After hearing this, the middle-aged man suddenly pulled Li Chunbo sharply to the right, entering a one-way street flanked by ten-story residential buildings. This road seemed to lead to an underground parking lot beneath the apartments.
"Hey! Don't go into a dead end!" Li Chunbo shouted excitedly. Entering the underground parking lot would be like trapping themselves and allowing their pursuers to take their time finishing them off.
The middle-aged man didn't look back but released Li Chunbo's hand and coldly said, "You're not my subordinate; your actions aren't under my command. Go wherever you want."
Li Chunbo was stunned for a second but quickly picked up his pace to follow the middle-aged man. The man seemed very familiar with this area, and at this point, he had no choice but to trust that he could lead them to safety.
However, it appeared they were running eastward now, which meant they were only getting deeper into enemy territory. Whether they would find Tiger or manage to retreat from the front lines seemed increasingly unlikely.
After running about two hundred meters, they entered a road where Li Chunbo glanced at a sign standing nearby: Cuiyuan East Road.
"Impressive! You must be a local resident of Jin!" Li Chunbo said with a smile as he patted the middle-aged man on the back but immediately realized he had misspoken.
The middle-aged man looked at Li Chunbo with that same expression one might give a fool, making Li Chunbo wish he could raise his gun and shoot him!
"Hurry up; they'll probably catch up soon," the middle-aged man crossed the road but didn’t intend to continue along it. Instead, he walked directly into an entrance facing them. Although confused, Li Chunbo followed.
"Their speed shouldn't be slower than ours, so why haven't they caught up?" Li Chunbo asked. "Did they give up?"
The middle-aged man smiled lightly and replied, "Is it really wise to let two unidentified enemy sergeants roam around behind their own combat troops? The reason they haven't caught up quickly isn't that they're slower than us; it's because they're afraid we'll ambush them. They just need to ensure they don't lose track of us."
Li Chunbo turned his head to glance behind, but he couldn't see any trace of the enemy soldiers. He shrugged and said, "But it seems they have lost track of us."
The middle-aged man once again wore that condescending look, as if he were looking at a fool, which infuriated Li Chunbo. "Don't look at me like that. Just say what you mean."
"How many enemy troops are in this area? Searching a specific range shouldn't be too difficult, right? It doesn't matter if they lost us; as long as they have a general idea of where we are, they can still find us."
Li Chunbo frowned. "So do we have to keep going deeper to truly evade their pursuit? But what's the point? Just the two of us can't directly take on a general, and besides, I believe the enemy general is still on the Aircraft Carrier's bridge or at the temporary command center near the port."
The middle-aged man smiled faintly. "If we knew the exact location of the enemy general, wouldn't it be enough to report directly to the Missile unit? Why do we have to charge into the dragon's den? Who do you think you are? A lone hero?"
"Then where are we supposed to go? If we're going this deep, do you have some special mission?" Li Chunbo couldn't help but speculate that this man might be one of our forces' trump cards left in the Tianjin area, possibly tasked with locating valuable enemy targets and reporting their coordinates to headquarters.
The middle-aged man smiled lightly. "If you want to stay alive, just follow me!"
Li Chunbo sighed. Since the other party didn't want to reveal their true purpose, it was clear they didn't fully trust him. Yet, despite not completely trusting him, they still wanted him along for the journey; it seemed they genuinely wanted him to survive.
As he repeatedly studied the man's face, Li Chunbo suddenly remembered something. While running, he began to search his pockets and finally found his phone in one of them at his waist. He pulled it out and asked the middle-aged man, "Do you recognize this phone?"
The middle-aged man glanced at it quickly and scoffed, "Isn't that just the latest model with built-in 3D projection?" After a moment, his gaze shifted back to the phone case and pendant, and his expression grew serious. He stopped in his tracks and asked solemnly, "Where did you get this phone?"
