Four pirates approached the crevice where Zhao Jun was hiding, laughing slowly. Zhao Jun had deliberately exposed himself to be spotted by the helicopter, and while it was searching for a suitable landing spot, he had quickly turned back and run a distance, finding this narrow crevice that could barely fit one person. He squeezed himself in and covered his body with some dry branches and leaves, leaving only his eyes visible to observe the enemy. If one did not pay special attention, it would be hard to find him in such a concealed spot.
With only a fist-sized rock in hand, Zhao Jun truly lacked confidence in facing off against four armed pirates.
Gradually, the voices of the pirates grew closer, and even the sound of dry branches snapping underfoot was clearly audible.
The pirates were speaking in English, which posed no challenge for Zhao Jun; he could even discern different accents among them.
They were discussing where to spend their newfound wealth after their heist. Clearly, they did not take the pursuit of Zhao Jun and others seriously. Chasing a few pampered rich kids on a deserted island, especially when two of them were women and they were unarmed, seemed as easy as playing cat and mouse.
The four pirates laughed as they reached the vicinity of Zhao Jun's hiding place. One of them even jumped onto the large rock that formed the crevice and cupped his hands around his mouth to shout into the forest ahead: "Stop hiding! I can see you! Come out! The Boss has prepared a feast for you; we're just waiting for you to return for dinner."
The others laughed heartily: "Yeah, it's all delicious food! Our Boss is treating you to chicken!"
They were still some distance from where they had first spotted Zhao Jun, completely unaware that he had dared to chase after the helicopter and hide so close to them.
The four continued laughing as they passed by Zhao Jun's hiding spot, searching further ahead. One pirate raised his gun and fired two shots into the air. Another pirate laughed and stopped him: "Hey, don’t scare my rabbits away, especially those two white ones."
The shooter chuckled lewdly: "Henry, are you interested in those two white rabbits? The Boss values those white rabbits highly. If you ruin them and lower their worth, the Boss will dock your pay when we get back."
Another pirate chimed in: "Once we have money, we should also taste this noble life. Playing with those white rabbits must be different from messing with wild hens."
The pirate who had stopped the shooting lowered his voice and laughed: "Don’t worry; once we get our money, you can play however you want. We’ve made such a big commotion this time; once we receive our payment from the Boss, we’ll make a quick getaway. As for these people, we’ll just leave them on the island to fend for themselves. If you want to play with those white rabbits later, you can stay on the island and become their chief, letting all these women bear you a bunch of kids..."
Zhao Jun's expression changed; it turned out these pirates had no intention of returning the islanders after receiving the ransom.
On this deserted island, what were the chances of survival?
The pirates laughed as they walked away. As they approached the forest where Zhao Jun's presence had been detected, the four pirates became alert, holding their Assault Rifles in a fan shape as they began to search seriously. Little did they know that Zhao Jun, hidden among the crevices of the rocks, had already slipped past them.
With danger temporarily averted, Zhao Jun let out a sigh of relief but did not crawl out from his hiding place.
In this unfamiliar wilderness, escaping to find another hiding spot was a risk in itself. Moreover, the bandits had a helicopter at their disposal. Rather than searching for another refuge, it seemed wiser to stay hidden here for now and wait until nightfall to make a move.
Having momentarily escaped danger, Zhao Jun began to worry about Tang Hao'er and Li Wei, the other two.
Cheng Zhengxiong was injured and unable to move easily. With five people gathered together, they would be too conspicuous. Zhao Jun volunteered to draw the pursuers away, allowing the others to search for a hiding place in the opposite direction. In such a vast forest, with only one helicopter chasing them, it should be possible for them to hide and evade capture.
Time dragged on slowly. The helicopter in the sky failed to spot Zhao Jun and his companions again. The pilot reported that fuel was running low.
Charlie cursed as he fired a random burst of bullets into the forest below. Seeing no movement in response, he ordered the pilot to return. As they passed by the four pirates still searching in the woods, Charlie cupped his hands into a megaphone and commanded them to continue their search, insisting that they must capture Zhao Jun and his companions alive.
The helicopter circled overhead before heading back to the bandit hideout. Meanwhile, the four pirates sat exhausted on the ground, swearing that once they caught Zhao Jun and his group, they would make them pay—beating up the men and punishing the women without hitting their faces but targeting their backsides instead.
At this point, the pirates had not fully grasped that Zhao Jun and his companions had escaped. After all, this was an isolated island; there was no way for Zhao Jun and his group to get away. Besides, they were unarmed and without food. They might play hide-and-seek for a while, but how long could that last?
Communication was cut off here; apart from Charlie's satellite phone, no one on the island could reach out for help. They had plenty of time to slowly flush Zhao Jun and his companions out of the forest.
The helicopter slowly descended into the yard of the bandit hideout. Charlie and Shen Kun emerged from the cabin with grim expressions.
Yang Bing stood expressionless by the window, watching as Charlie and Shen Kun climbed out of the helicopter. He knew they must have gone after Zhao Jun's group. Seeing that they hadn’t brought any of them back with them eased his tension just a bit.
However, Yang Bing noticed that there were four fewer thugs leaving in the helicopter, and he couldn't help but feel a bit worried knowing that the thugs were still pursuing Zhao Jun and the others.
If only he could run out with Zhao Jun and the others. With his skills, he might be able to take down one or two of the pursuing thugs. As long as he had an automatic weapon in hand, he would have a real chance to eliminate these thugs one by one.
Shen Kun and Charlie were standing in the yard discussing how to arrange the ransom demands from each hostage's family according to their plan.
Five people had escaped, but this would not hinder the normal execution of their plan. Losing five people simply meant five less ransoms. Although Cheng Zhengxiong and Tang Hao'er, who were among the most valuable hostages from China, had escaped, there were still nearly three hundred other hostages left. Demanding ransoms was a tedious task, and they had plenty to keep them busy.
As for Zhao Jun, who had escaped along with Cheng Zhengxiong and Tang Hao'er, he was conveniently overlooked by Charlie and Shen Kun.
A poor teacher wouldn't be able to squeeze out even a hundred thousand or eighty thousand dollars; such an amount was hardly worth their attention now.
Shen Kun and Charlie exchanged some words, then turned to the people crowded at the windows of each room, looking out. At that moment, everyone they saw was like a fortune to them; each person represented a stack of enticing dollars.
Shen Kun spotted Yang Bing standing at the window of Room One with a gloomy expression. He suddenly chuckled and said to Charlie, "Boss, let me take a bite out of this fat piece of meat first. I estimate we can squeeze at least one hundred million dollars out of him."
Charlie patted Shen Kun's arm and laughed, "Shen, you handle the Mainland Chinese guy. I'll go check on that young master from Wa Country's Mitsubishi Corporation. You just need to smash that guy's nose with your gun butt; I'll ask him if he wants to buy a band-aid for one hundred million dollars."
Charlie and Shen Kun exchanged glances and suddenly burst into laughter together.
This is my territory; I make the rules. One hundred million dollars for a band-aid? That's not expensive at all.
