Nick Fury's sense of dread was rapidly expanding. The good news he had just received was instantly overshadowed by the bad news from Chen Fan. He couldn't help but wonder who dared to make him happy for just five minutes!
Shortly after Chen Fan ended the call, a massive mechanical whirring echoed through the night sky of New York. Countless people looked up, pondering what could possibly be happening.
News media quickly mobilized, but as soon as they stepped outside, they were met with orders from high-ranking officials that restricted their freedom of movement, leading to a complete news blackout.
A swarm of armed machines surged from military zones, secret departments, special units, and combat divisions, all moving efficiently toward Maple Town. Even at night, their operational capacity remained swift.
...
The night breeze whispered softly.
Chen Fan and his group had just emerged from the underground space when a shadow appeared in their line of sight. It was the Punisher, who had returned to check on the situation.
"Rob? What happened?" Punisher asked the only familiar face among them. From the expressions on their faces, he sensed their tension and felt compelled to inquire.
"Let's walk and talk," Rob sighed. Dealing with a Vampire Division had unexpectedly stirred up a heap of trouble.
Was it really so difficult to just put on a show while seeking revenge? Instead of impressing anyone, it only led to a series of frustrating complications.
With this thought in mind, Big Baldy wore an expression of profound melancholy.
It was a face devoid of attachment to anything.
The two fell to the back of the group and began conversing quietly. As the only two ordinary people present, they shared their thoughts in a deeply friendly manner.
Stepping out of the ruins, an unexpected situation arose.
A squad of armed Patrol Officers appeared in the line of sight, all equipped with handguns.
The leader, a dark-skinned man, scanned the area and waved his hand. A dozen guns were aimed at the group of suspicious individuals.
"What is your connection to the recent explosion? Or are you the true culprits behind this heinous act?" The captain looked coldly at them; no matter how one viewed it, they seemed very suspicious.
"We are agents from the Department of Homeland Strategic Defense, Offense, and Logistics!" Peter blurted out. He had been waiting for the right moment to say this, and now that the opportunity had come, it felt incredibly satisfying!
It was no wonder Coulson always had a line ready; seeing the dumbfounded expressions on the faces before him made Peter feel secretly pleased!
"Homeland? What logistics department? What organization is this?" The captain's eyes narrowed. After Peter finished speaking, his expression grew even more wary. "No matter what department you're from, it's best to behave until your identities are verified. Any resistance will result in an attack!"
"We're from S.H.I.E.L.D. As New York's police force, you must have heard of us!" Rob stepped forward, glaring defiantly at the dozen cold gun barrels without even furrowing his brow.
"S.H.I.E.L.D.?" The captain's gaze sharpened as he pointed at Big Baldy. "Do you have anything to prove your identity? If you can't provide it, you'd better stay right here! And... let me warn you one last time: do not move recklessly, or next time you'll be eating bullets!"
He shot a fierce glare at Big Baldy; when had he ever been afraid of a stare-down?
Peter felt gloomy. He couldn't understand why everyone became polite when Coulson mentioned S.H.I.E.L.D.'s full name, while he faced hostility as soon as he stepped out.
Was it his tone that was off?
Or perhaps... he wasn't speaking quickly enough?
It seems necessary to consult Coulson on how to effectively instill fear when pronouncing the titles of S.H.I.E.L.D.!
Just as the situation was about to reach a stalemate, suddenly, the Patrol Officers, numbering over a dozen, all displayed dazed expressions. Their eyes rolled back, and one by one, they collapsed neatly to the ground.
"Despicable... you actually used poison..." The captain, who had held out until the end, glared angrily at Big Baldy. His eyelids fluttered, and he followed his teammates' earlier posture, falling down as well.
"When faced with such situations, using a little special means is the quickest way to get results!" The voice of the Punisher rang out as he clapped his hands, exuding an air of a seasoned expert.
"Could you please give us a heads-up before using smoke bombs?" Rob rubbed his head. If he hadn't sensed something was off and held his breath first, he would have ended up in the same position as the fallen Patrol Officers.
"You used smoke bombs? Why didn't I feel anything?" Peter chuckled as he looked at the already toppled Patrol Officers. He realized he still felt perfectly fine, without even a hint of dizziness.
"Oh! This kind of smoke is specifically designed for humans!" Facing Big Boy's puzzled gaze, the Punisher spoke with sincere conviction; he wasn't lying!
"Are you implying... that I'm not human?" Peter wanted to roar in frustration. Who insults someone indirectly like that? This old veteran was quite cunning.
"Hmm? I never said that!"
The Punisher turned his head slightly, directing his gaze elsewhere.
Can humans shoot webs? Can humans possess several tons of strength? Can humans bungee jump from tall buildings?
If humans could do all these things, then why couldn't he?
Hmph! This is definitely not jealousy!
Without the obstruction of the Patrol Officer, Chen Fan and his group smoothly made their way to a nearby valley.
"This must be the place!" Chen Fan mused, stroking his chin as he examined the area. The valley was thick with the aura of Kabaneri; even without a nod from the Vampire Girl, he could confirm that this was indeed where the Kabaneri had appeared.
He wasn't worried about what tricks the Vampire Girl might play.
"Hey! Don't rush off! It's so dark, can you see the path?" Rob blurted out, immediately realizing how foolish his question was. Just because he couldn't see didn't mean others couldn't.
After all, only he and the Punisher could be classified as normal humans here.
"It's perfectly clear!" Peter swayed his head. Although the visibility was dim, everything in front of him appeared almost as bright as day; he could even make out the veins on the grass beneath them. At that moment, his gaze flicked over to Big Baldy, and he suddenly shouted, "Rob! Watch your step!"
"What’s underfoot? A snake? Or a pit? Wait, this soft squishy feeling—could it be...?" Peter's warning came a moment too late. As Rob took a step forward, his suspicion turned into certainty—there was definitely something beneath him.
"007, come over here!" Chen Fan, who had been mostly silent during their journey, blinked slightly and issued a warning: "Rob, keep your distance—stay ten meters away. If you dare to step closer, get ready for a trip to Monk Island!"
The Thunder Book, which Rob had been relying on for safety, flew out of his backpack.
"Do you need some light?" 007 appeared with its own flash effect; its almost solid form emitted a purple glow like a beacon.
With Chen Fan's nod, it floated quietly in mid-air, illuminating an area of one hundred meters as bright as day.
The Punisher chuckled softly; it was indeed very clear! He moved slightly, maintaining a distance from Rob.
After ten minutes, everyone arrived at the valley floor.
"That vampire... didn't you say the valley was sealed off?" Chen Fan asked, puzzled. From his perception, there was no sign of any blockade in the entire valley.
If he weren't sure that Vampire Girl wasn't lying, he wouldn't have questioned her.
The group looked around, seeing no signs of life, and turned their attention to the calm Vampire Girl.
"We've equipped laser sensing weapons around the valley floor. As long as something moves within the detection range, it will trigger an attack like this..." With that, Vampire Girl picked up a fist-sized stone and threw it a short distance away. Instantly, lasers shot out, and the granite shattered into countless tiny fragments.
Rob shuddered, afraid to move his feet. If he accidentally entered the detection range, he certainly didn't believe his body could withstand the hardness of granite.
"Don't worry, the sensing devices only target non-living entities," Vampire Girl said coldly. If it weren't for encountering monsters like Chen Fan and Monster Teacher, who made her feel no desire to resist, she wouldn't be so compliant.
In fact, Vampire Girl was unaware of one thing: Chen Fan's Godslayer physique constantly interfered with her emotions, leaving her with no thoughts of rebellion.
