The warm sensation brought a comfortable expression to the girl's face, and her dusty features were cleaned by the Monster Teacher, who also used some fabric found in the Station below to sew her a new outfit.
Once all the work was completed, morning was not far off.
By the time they reached the skies above Vajra City, it was already deep into the night. After some tinkering, a hazy light began to glow on the distant horizon.
From ten thousand meters in the air, the view was breathtakingly beautiful.
"What is this place? A hall?" She maintained her good habit of waking up early. When her biological clock rang, she opened her eyes to find herself in an unfamiliar setting.
—Nothing here resembled anything from her memory.
"Hey! You're awake! How do you feel? Is there anywhere uncomfortable?" The Monster Teacher spoke from beside her, having transformed into an ordinary man, fully considerate of the delicate feelings of someone from ancient times.
"Who are you? Are you the one who saved me last night?" The girl rubbed her eyes. The face before her was not what she remembered, yet the voice that reached her ears was unmistakably familiar.
"I'm fine; I've never felt this comfortable before. Also... thank you for saving me last night!" she replied, but her gaze wandered around the hall until it landed on a clean steamed bun, which made her visibly relax.
"I'm not dead, right?" She looked at the Monster Teacher with wide eyes; this ordinary face gave her a warm feeling.
She didn't want to die because she couldn't let go. If she died, she wouldn't be able to fulfill her mother's dying wish—
—to take care of her immobile brother.
"Of course you're not dead!" The Monster Teacher smiled as he placed the clean steamed bun into the girl's hands, noticing that her gaze had been fixed on it.
At that moment, a delightful aroma spread throughout the hall. The girl did not show any immediate reaction; instead, when she caught a whiff of the scent, she turned to look at the Monster Teacher and asked in a tender voice, "Can you take me back?"
"How about having a meal before going back?" The Monster Teacher inhaled deeply; the aroma was quite tempting for a monster!
The girl's eyes showed some interest, but more than that was determination as she shook her head.
"Alright then, I'll take you back right away!" Seeing the bun in her hand, the Monster Teacher's eyes lit up with understanding.
On one side of the hall, in the kitchen of the fortress, Tony looked conflicted as he stared at the table full of dishes. For him, who could only eat tomatoes, it had been a long time since he had tasted normal cuisine.
"Sir, please do not be tempted by the delicacies. If you stop eating tomatoes, the heavy metal virus will rebound immediately. For your precious life, please refuse all gourmet food!" J.A.R.V.I.S.'s stern voice rang out. It would not budge on this point for the sake of its boss's survival.
At one side of the large table, Chen Fan sat in a chair, looking at the exquisite dishes with his brows relaxed. He turned to J.A.R.V.I.S.'s projection and said, "These dishes look familiar. Where did you steal this from, J.A.R.V.I.S.?"
"The S.H.I.E.L.D. cafeteria!" J.A.R.V.I.S. quickly replied. There was nothing shameful about it; to it, everything was merely a manifestation of data.
— The concept of stealing knowledge did not exist.
Chen Fan smirked. If Kitch knew about this, he would probably faint from anger, as all his culinary skills had been effortlessly copied.
Turning away from the food on the table, Tony began to move his fingers. He estimated that he still had three more months of eating only tomatoes before this would end—
"Sir, this is your breakfast!" A robot walked out from the kitchen, holding a tray with a tomato the size of a human head.
After glancing at it, Tony's expression subtly changed. He felt that J.A.R.V.I.S. had suddenly awakened a mischievous side. Why didn’t it cook these dishes after he finished eating his tomatoes?
He felt a wave of despair rising within him as he approached the brink of collapse.
Not long after, Monster Teacher returned to the fortress and joined the breakfast brigade. With speed far exceeding Mach 0, he basically packed all the food into his stomach.
While everyone in the fortress enjoyed their breakfast, Peter was facing a critical moment thousands of miles away.
Holding a steamed corn cake made from coarse cornmeal in his hands and a bowl of plain water beside him, there was nothing else.
As a modern person and a wealthy individual, Big Boy had never eaten such primitive food since birth. Even at its worst, there were always compressed biscuits as substitutes.
Just yesterday, he had indulged in luxurious cuisine and occasionally snagged some popcorn from Tentacle Monster. When thirsty, he could enjoy expensive champagne—
Yet now he could only gnaw on corn cakes. Peter sighed as hunger compelled him to open his mouth and begin chewing on the food in his hands.
— Cough cough cough!
Rough food was stuffed into his mouth, dry and carrying a strong, unpleasant taste.
Peter struggled to eat, tears almost spilling from his eyes as he slightly tilted his head to gaze out at the passing scenery. The bitterness weighed heavily on his heart.
"I'm really sorry, Mr. Peter!" A nearby boy translated Acorus's words. With Acorus's tone filled with regret, Peter shook his head. "It's okay. As long as we find my companions, I believe everyone will be saved!"
Even though Big Boy was simple-minded, he understood the motives of various nations.
However, for humanity in this apocalyptic world, there was no longer a concept of national honor or territorial claims.
Simply surviving without being devoured by monsters was a blessing in itself.
Suddenly, a series of loud footsteps echoed—heavy and rapid. In an instant, a warrior appeared with a group of people.
The leading warrior looked hurried, and upon seeing the girl sitting safely behind him, he swiftly drew his sword, pointing the tip at the boy beside Peter while addressing Acorus. "Lord Iris... please leave this boy!"
This sudden scene left everyone stunned; even Peter scratched his head in confusion, unable to comprehend what was happening. The pain of language barriers surged once more.
"Kabaneri... since you haven't harmed the two adults, I will leave you with your life!" The Young Samurai's expression was serious, his voice filled with murderous intent. Before he finished speaking, he lunged at the boy with his sword but was stopped by two fingers pinching the blade.
"I am not Kabaneri..."
"Although I was bitten by a Kabaneri, I haven't turned into one. I am still human; please believe me!" The boy pleaded, unable to stand by while being labeled a monster and threatened with weapons.
"What is he?" Peter asked as he held the blade tightly.
"He is a Kabaneri!" The boy's face was filled with despair; he had always hated Kabaneri more than anything else.
But now being called a Kabaneri filled him with anguish that choked him up; even the blood flowing through him felt cold.
Peter had sensed something strange about the boy long ago; however, if he were truly a Kabaneri, something seemed off. The Kabaneri Peter knew did not look like this.
"He is not a Kabaneri; I can prove it!" As the crowd began to stir, a girl walked over. She appeared clean and tidy, standing out remarkably in the chaotic carriage.
As everyone, including the boy, let out a sigh of relief, she spoke again, "But he is not human—."
"Lord Nameless... If he is neither Kabaneri nor human, then what is he?" The girl Acorus had already distanced herself from the carriage, surrounded by samurai.
"He is a Kabaneri, a monster that exists between Kabaneri and human!" The beautiful face of Nameless remained expressionless, yet her lips twisted in self-mockery.
—Not human, nor Kabaneri, but a monster known as Kabaneri.
However, the vigilance of the crowd showed no signs of wavering. The Steam Gun was firmly aimed at the boy, with even Peter within the range of attack.
The term Kabaneri had long become synonymous with terror for everyone present.
The disbelief among the crowd caused the girl to furrow her brow. Stepping into the center, she turned her back to them and, under countless gazes, revealed her thin clothing, exposing her pale shoulders...
At the location of her heart, there was something nightmarish.
—A pulsating red membrane.
"Fire—!"
"This woman is also a monster! Shoot!"
