Under Yu Tian's request, Dr. S brought him to stand before the massive time machine.
Standing in front of such a colossal device, Yu Tian hesitated. He was uncertain whether he should return to the past and relive memories long buried. But Dr. S's words echoed in his mind:
“Yu Tian... don't you want to find your lost memories? Face everything from the past again, even if they are terrifying memories. They are still part of the past; accept them!”
At that moment, Dr. S was fully prepared, with thousands of computers whirring away, calculating the temporal data of the past.
“Alright!” After saying this, Yu Tian caught Dr. S's supportive expression and walked over to the machine. He lay down in the groove as the protective cover slowly descended around him. An oval metallic sphere enveloped Yu Tian, and a bright light flashed as his consciousness began to drift upward.
It seemed as if a voice was introducing everything about this world...
Professor X was a renowned anatomy professor at the Cosmic Medical Academy. To understand the impact of diseases on ancient humans, he had long been studying ancient mummies.
One summer, when Yu Tian had just graduated from United University at the age of twenty, he became fortunate enough to be appointed as the professor's temporary assistant due to his agility. He accompanied him to the Egyptian region. His main tasks included classifying excavated items, packing them for sea transport, and researching relevant materials.
The reason for their expedition to Egypt, a land long abandoned, was due to a tectonic event in Africa that unearthed a massive pyramid from beneath the ground. Scientists who initially thought all surface relics had been successfully relocated to the Cosmic Museum found themselves in a predicament, causing a sensation throughout the Solar System.
Thus, under public pressure, the government had no choice but to fund research into this discovery.
Upon arriving in the original Egyptian region, the professor took Yu Tian on a tour. Although many relics had been moved to the vast museum in space, numerous crumbling structures remained abandoned. They were captivated by these grand and mysterious buildings; despite their dilapidation, their former magnificence was still imaginable. Six thousand years ago, this place might have been home to one of the largest cities.
However, many of these structures were completely weathered. Without the rough magnetic field protection they once had during construction, they would soon be reduced to dust by wind and sand, becoming part of the landscape.
In the following week, Yu Tian and the professor searched for information in a temporary mobile museum. After an advance team successfully entered the tomb—inside the pyramid—the professor eagerly rushed there. He quickly began capturing three-dimensional images of the corpses, collecting evidence and investigating causes of death.
Yu Tian began sorting the burial items, taking proper measures to protect the body. He believed that investigating the cause of death was unnecessary; after all, it was impossible to catch the murderer again. However, in this era of extreme scarcity of archaeological resources, finding more things was clearly a good way to buy time.
Working alongside him was Kechisen from the museum, a mixed-blood individual born from parents raised in different planetary environments—Mars and Saturn had vastly different conditions back then. He had brown hair and dark skin but was very familiar with ancient Egyptian history and archaeological discoveries, being an old friend of the professor.
In the 30th century, archaeologists had almost no work due to a lack of excavatable sites. Yet for some unknown reason, this profession continued to exist.
Yu Tian speculated that they were simply passionate about their work! Even though Earth's ruins had been fully excavated, they still did not give up searching for ancient sites among the stars. According to a certain association, there should have been predecessors who visited other planets before human civilization. It was just that a catastrophe that wiped out all the dinosaurs caused all evidence to vanish…
At that moment, an event occurred that forced them to make significant changes to their plans.
One afternoon, Yu Tian returned from the library to find the professor, Kechisen, and three others animatedly discussing something. On the aluminum glass table lay a crumpled waterproof paper holding a sparkling gem. As he approached for a closer look, he realized it was a dragonfly with one wing spread out, carved from a brilliant sapphire. The wings measured over ten centimeters and were inlaid with small gemstones of red, blue, and green. Even Yu Tian, an outsider, could tell that this was indeed a masterpiece. The back of the dragonfly had a small notch indicating it was missing one wing. Although it only had three wings, this flaw did not detract from the sculpture's exquisite nature.
Despite living in an era of advanced technology where creating similar objects was not difficult, Yu Tian knew that this item seemed to date back to the sixties and carried potential value.
The museum director informed them that a representative from the museum had purchased the body of this dragonfly several years ago. It was known to have been carved around the 27th century BC during the time of Khufu in ancient Egypt as a royal burial item. The gem wings had only recently appeared. A mysterious person brought them to the museum for appraisal, and upon recognizing it as an invaluable treasure, the director kept the wings and paid the Martian some money while warning him not to acquire or smuggle artifacts again; otherwise, he would face punishment from the Galactic Government.
After hearing the director's account, the professor carefully examined and studied the wings while asking Kechisen if he could locate the seller's residence.
Kechisen said he would give it a try. Yu Tian naturally wanted to help but found himself lacking connections after just graduating from university, so he obediently stayed by the professor's side.
The next day, Kechisen took the wings to Mars's bustling market and learned from a vendor that an old man from Zone 520 had come by several weeks earlier trying to sell such an item.
Upon receiving this news, Professor X decided to disguise himself as a wealthy collector looking to purchase treasures and head to Zone 520. He also brought along a museum staff member to verify the authenticity of any artifacts. He suspected that this seller might be the first discoverer of this ancient tomb. Although the pyramid had been detected when it first appeared, government support was lacking, causing institutional development delays. During this time, some clever individuals likely took advantage of it to seek out small artifacts. Even a tiny wing could be worth a fortune.
Kechisen had already spread word on every floor in Zone 520: a "wealthy collector" would be coming to purchase artifacts. Consequently, many people came seeking Professor X daily. The professor spent some money buying what they claimed were ancestral relics to maintain his cover while concealing his true intentions.
One night, an emaciated old man arrived; his skin was dry and shriveled, but his rolling eyes were proof that he was still alive.
He requested Professor X to meet him alone.
As he walked into the living room and closed the door, the professor asked if he had brought anything worth seeing. The old man, with trembling hands, reached into his long coat and pulled out a metal box. He opened the box and placed it on the table. The light illuminated the contents exceptionally clearly: fine golden threads intertwined, and red and blue gemstones sparkled… It was indeed the Wings that the doctor and his team had been searching for. At that moment, the wings lay quietly on a piece of tattered cloth; even a beggar could tell that it was a priceless work of art.
Everyone in the room was too astonished to speak. The professor widened his eyes, repeatedly examining the Wings in his hands, unable to contain his joy.
“How much will you pay, sir?” the old man asked eagerly. It seemed that this old fellow was one of those characters who only cared about money.
Professor X stepped into another room and retrieved a dragonfly missing a piece of Wings, attaching the old man's piece onto it.
Ah, it fit perfectly!
“Kechisen, please tell him I can offer him 50,000 Web Currency, but he must reveal the origin of the Wings. Otherwise, I can accuse him of trespassing into the Royal Tomb.”
The old man watched everything unfold and suddenly seemed to realize something. Taking advantage of Professor X's momentary distraction, he snatched the Wings and slowly backed away.
Upon hearing Kechisen's translation, his face turned furious.
“Fraud! A blatant fraud!” he shouted hoarsely as he hurled the Wings at the professor. Unfortunately, he missed; the Wings struck the wall made of mixed metals and shattered into pieces.
In an instant, he pushed open the door and quickly vanished without a trace.
Yu Tian hurriedly chased after him, but his ragged figure had already disappeared among the dense clusters of buildings.
He wanted to pursue further, but the professor called him back.
Dejectedly, he returned to his temporary residence and saw four or five men huddled in a corner, staring at him with puzzled expressions. This was unsettling and even somewhat alarming. Although this place was not the best accommodation, it had been arranged by the organization; how could strangers enter freely? Perhaps their spaceship had cloaking abilities; otherwise, it would be difficult for them to appear in this floating residential area in space.
Yu Tian's intuition told him that these strangers were a little strange, but that was not the point right now... The frustration in his heart was indescribable. How could it not be heartbreaking to see a priceless treasure turned into pieces in an instant? But the professor was still happy. He picked up a fragment and said: "He reminds us never to underestimate ordinary people. What he smashed was a fake. I don't know when it was changed." Kechisen and Yu Tian looking at each other, they were actually fooled by the old man, and he was such a skinny old man. Professor But the next morning, Kechisen brought depressing news: the old man was killed near the building, and the wings were missing. Yu Tian After hearing this, my heart moved. Could it be those people who were guarding the door that day? He couldn't help but blame himself. If he had chased him that day, it might have been a different situation. For several days, there has been no news at all. It seems that the group of desperadoes do not know the location of the tomb, let alone selling Wings in a nearby area where security is very tight. The professor decided to return to the pyramid in two days. That night, Yu Tian and the professor were packing their things. Suddenly there was a knock on the door, and a dark-skinned young man stood at the door. Professor Even though the Chinese language is vigorously promoted, many people just cannot abandon their original writing and language. The professor asked the young man to sit down and speak slowly, but he was willing to stand. He said his name was Liu Xi, and his father was killed a few days ago. Since then, people have been coming to his house asking about dragonflies with Wings. He said that this was Pharaoh's curse and it would bring disaster, so he had to disturb them because he knew the secret place where the treasure was hidden and he was willing to take Professor X there. He does not care about the treasure of Royal Tomb, he just wants the safety of his family.
Liu Xi's words undoubtedly injected a dose of excitement into the professors.
The next day, they gathered their tools and boarded a specially equipped spaceship to set off.
Before long, they arrived at a valley where numerous ruins lay at the edge of a cliff, all weathered beyond recognition.
Clearly, there had once been a magnificent temple here. However, the power of time was overwhelming, and humanity's capacity for destruction was equally formidable...
Liu Xi believed they were close. They hovered the spaceship in the air and safely descended using a spiral staircase. Liu Xi and Kechisen went to find the cave he had visited with his father, while Yu Tian stayed behind with Professor X.
Professor X continuously reminded Yu Tian that those people might belong to the Poison Dragon Organization; only they would be so bold.
The professor cleared away some rubble around a large stone, revealing a series of strange pictographic symbols.
He was astonished and excited to the point of almost gasping for breath.
"It's Spiral Decoration... the mark of the dynasty... it's from the Khufu Dynasty!"
