Cui Ming remembered the excitement of the novel he was reading. During his training, he watched the performances of the four masters. Li Qing was undoubtedly a strong contender; aside from Ding Ze, who could teleport when prepared, no one could evade his powerful kicks. Li Qing opted to sacrifice strength for speed, making his flying kicks nearly negligible in terms of power. His true strength lay in his punches, which struck like a heavy hammer against his opponents, causing injuries and a brief shockwave.
When Li Qing faced Ding Ze, he closed in with a flying kick. The Heavenly Thunder Break inflicted damage and created a shockwave that slowed down Ding Ze's energy flow for a period, preventing him from launching full-force attacks. After breaking through Ding Ze's defenses, Li Qing could either kick him away or choose to retreat, but regardless of the move, there was always a chance that Ding Ze would retaliate with lightning speed.
Against Beiyue, Li Qing found himself at a disadvantage; his flying kicks were almost ineffective. After knocking two opponents away, he still had to get close to engage in combat, while Beiyue's Greatsword attacks posed no threat to him.
Facing Mi Xiaonan was particularly frustrating for Li Qing. Mi Xiaonan's hand seals were executed at an astonishing speed, fast enough to leave traces of her fingers in the air. As Li Qing launched a flying kick, Mi Xiaonan countered with Chidori, marking him. At the moment Li Qing broke through her defenses, Mi Xiaonan could activate Storm Thunder, using lightning to penetrate his defenses and potentially paralyze or stun him depending on his physical condition and energy levels. Following this, Mi Xiaonan could mark Li Qing again with Chidori. After three marks, she could unleash Ultimate Thunder, severely injuring Li Qing and stunning him. This attack was independent of energy levels and directly targeted his body.
Li Qing was clearly at a disadvantage against Mi Xiaonan; Beiyue was her natural counter. With Beiyue wielding a Greatsword, Mi Xiaonan's Chidori lacked speed and precision. Beiyue could easily deflect Chidori. All of Mi Xiaonan's tactics relied on Chidori as a trigger. To hit Beiyue, she had to get close; however, Beiyue's shockwaves not only inflicted damage but also sent Mi Xiaonan flying away. By the time she returned, her hard-earned marks would have vanished. Additionally, Beiyue's aerial four-slice attack left Mi Xiaonan with no means to counter.
In terms of one-on-one matchups: Li Qing was stronger than Ding Ze, equal to Beiyue, and weaker than Mi Xiaonan. Meanwhile, Mi Xiaonan was weaker than Beiyue. What about the matchup between Mi Xiaonan and Ding Ze? Both were violent attackers. Cui Ming had only seen Ding Ze's energy lightning and teleportation until now; after training, Ding Ze revealed an array of techniques. He could generate energy waves that resisted energy-based attacks—including Mi Xiaonan's Chidori and Storm Thunder—or explode them to inflict damage on nearby targets. When energy or magical attacks hit the energy wave and were absorbed, Ding Ze could choose to absorb that energy to temporarily enhance his own force.
When Mi Xiaonan faced Ding Ze, neither dared to make the first move. The moment Mi Xiaonan unleashed Chidori, Ding Ze would respond with energy lightning; if she activated Storm Thunder to detonate her mark, Ding Ze would use an energy wave to become immune to her attack while absorbing energy for retaliation. However, Ding Ze was cautious as well; if he acted first and allowed Mi Xiaonan to transform into a lightning ball at high speed, he would be forced into close quarters where his energy wave couldn't absorb anything and would have to explode instead—leading him to be overwhelmed by Mi Xiaonan's successive marks that would stun him.
Cui Ming felt disheartened as he stepped off the stage; he couldn't defeat any of them. Even when immobilized by the Yellow Card, while Cui Ming couldn't draw Fate Cards, Ding Ze could teleport for pursuit while Mi Xiaonan unleashed her lightning balls; Li Qing had flying kicks while Beiyue executed rapid slashes. If he tried to hold them down—he couldn't kill them; if he tried to run—he couldn't escape them.
As Li Qing pointed out earlier, Cui Ming lacked any means of escape. Beiyue didn't need an escape plan; she thrived in direct confrontation. Mi Xiaonan's lightning balls moved incredibly fast while Ding Ze's teleportation was true instantaneous movement. They could still flee even under pressure—Cui Ming had no such option.
Cui Ming returned to his private training ground, feeling frustrated. Relying on enhanced cards offered no means of escape; now it was a matter of whether the Fate Card and Card Play had any escape options. Indeed, there were some, like Escape Route, which was faster than Mi Xiaonan. However, while Mi Xiaonan could escape at lightning speed without tiring, Cui Ming's Escape Route was only effective for about ten seconds. Even so, drawing the Escape Route card during an escape required an immense amount of luck.
Card Play seemed hopeless; it all depended on the Fate Card. The Fate Card was a White Card that allowed him to perceive the fluctuations of nearby Force. Force was a form of life energy present in both plants and animals. By focusing on the Fate Card, he could discover a map-like representation of various Force locations, including trees and Mi Xiaonan's group. However, the traces of non-cultivators were so faint they were nearly impossible to detect. The fluctuations of cultivators' Force were much more pronounced and could be seen clearly.
After two days of studying and concentrating on the Fate Card, Cui Ming had not found any means of escape but had made some progress. His perception range with the Fate Card had expanded, and he could see the Force bodies more clearly, such as the faint outline of an Island Indigenous Monkey's Force body. However, for animals smaller than monkeys, no matter how focused he was, he could not locate their positions on the Fate Card. Even the Extinguished State of Mi Xiaonan remained undetectable to him.
Days later, Zhao Weifeng returned from watching the Competition Match, bursting with energy as he arrived on the island. His first goal was to vent the pent-up frustration from months of training. Naturally, his first choice was to challenge Cui Ming, but Cui Ming was currently in a personal retreat and refused to engage. Beiyue and his group were more interested in discussing the Competition Match; thus, they trained together during the day and watched recordings at night, with Zhao Wei providing live commentary.
In the Competition Match, participants could choose to compete in one to three rounds based on mutual agreement; if they couldn't agree, three rounds would be played automatically. It was a typical tower defense competition where both sides earned funds to purchase defenses and protect their bases. The sources of funds varied; the simplest method was to eliminate opponents to earn money while forcing them to spend money on revivals—this was also the most effective strategy.
Additionally, there were missions available in the competition arena where NPCs would issue tasks such as delivering goods from Point A to Point B within a time limit for monetary rewards while being cautious of enemy interceptions. There were also simple riddle-solving tasks; different missions yielded varying amounts of money. After earning funds, players could buy defenses and deploy or enhance soldiers to attack enemy towers. The types of Defense Towers varied widely based on individual choices. Money could also be used to purchase various treasures, each serving different purposes.
The ultimate goal was to destroy the opponent's base.
