There was hardly anything happening along the way. Now, aside from the bold fools who dared to provoke the Guild, who else would dare to mess with the Guild's cavalry? Newton arrived at the palace like this.
"Alright, leave your body with the caravan," Newton said to Mavis.
"Mm."
Mavis nodded, and then her body slumped down as if her soul had detached, floating in mid-air.
"Every time I see this, it feels like I've died once," Newton remarked with a slight smirk, ignoring Mavis's antics as he made his way directly to the palace entrance. At the entrance, someone was already waiting.
"Long time no see, Alka. You still look so formidable," Newton greeted with a smile.
"Not at all, Sir Isaac. You flatter me," Alcadios replied politely. He was the captain of the Cherry Blossom Knights, possibly the strongest individual within the kingdom. He was also the protector of the Emerald Princess. Newton had often run into him during his previous visits to the palace; he was a decent person.
Newton approached Alcadios and nudged him with his elbow.
"Hey, any news? What does the king want? Why all this fuss that requires my presence?"
"Well, it seems they've found an ancient magic in the royal archives—something called Eclipse. They want to discuss it with you," Alcadios explained without holding back.
Eclipse was a type of magic that allowed for time travel, much like a time machine. The kingdom had witnessed the terror of Acnologia and felt they needed to grasp a powerful weapon; thus, the history-altering Eclipse caught their attention.
"Are they foolish?" Newton scoffed at this notion. Time? Was that something mere mortals could toy with? Even if one were to return to the past and change something, there were too many paradoxes involved—especially when considering timelines and causality. It was a recipe for disaster; one wrong move could erase everyone in the present.
"Do you not have faith in this method either?"
Alcadios furrowed his brow. The supporters had a good point; figures like Acnologia and Jelf could not have been this strong from the very beginning. If only they could go back to when they were weak and deal with them then, wouldn’t that solve the problem?
However, there were many opponents within the kingdom. History is a form of inheritance; denying history may seem like it could remedy some regrets, but it negates all the efforts of those who came before. Moreover, who could say whether even more dangerous situations might arise? Even if they truly managed to deal with Acnologia, what if another threat emerged? If Jelf were taken down, what would happen if a new foe appeared?
Both sides held firm to their arguments, each with their own reasons. The king found himself in a difficult position and could only summon Newton, as it was wise to consult a technical expert on such matters.
"Sir Isaac, as long as we can return to the past, saving your companions is not impossible."
Alcadios looked at Newton with urgency. Newton was puzzled as to why this fellow was so eager to change the past. Did he have some hidden agenda? Of course, Newton knew that his companions were safe now; had this been a year ago, things would have been different.
Newton remained silent and turned his gaze toward Mavis.
"Eclipse does indeed exist, and as he said, it can traverse time and space. However, I agree with you that changing history is not a good idea. Although I was cursed because of Jelf, if I had never met Jelf, I would surely regret it."
Indeed, memories are incredibly precious to people. Every moment in life, whether successful or not, is an invaluable treasure. To have that denied by others was something Newton could not accept.
"I'm sorry, but I also disagree with the Eclipse plan."
"That's true; placing hope in the past seems rather unbelievable and unrealistic to me," Alcadios nodded. He actually shared this sentiment but noticed that this idea had gained considerable traction among the ministers—there were plenty of shortsighted individuals in that circle.
"By the way, who suggested this idea to the king? Or why now?"
Newton was confused; if someone had such thoughts, they should have brought them up long ago. Why now?
"Because of the Dark Guild..."
Alcadios sighed. This made things awkward for Newton since most of the Dark Guild's operations were currently under his control—both past and present.
Even Mavis shot Newton a disdainful look, as if to say this was all his doing.
“Dark Guild, what’s been going on lately?”
Newton skillfully concealed his embarrassment. If the people of the kingdom found out that he was leading the Dark Guild, he might be killed on the spot.
“You wouldn’t believe it. Even though your Fairy Tail took down two major Dark Guilds, another one has popped up called Circus. It has united all the remaining forces of the Six Demon Generals and Demon Heart, turning into an enormous Dark Magic Guild. And the leader, well, he’s a real creep…”
Newton tugged at the corner of his mouth as Mavis nearly burst into laughter beside him.
“The most critical part is that this guy’s goals are completely unclear. The previous Dark Guilds were just looking for Jelf, but we have no idea what this one is after. We’re worried he might have some means to actually find Jelf. If he does, it could spell disaster for the world. So we decided to take preemptive action and eliminate Jelf. Without the founder of all Dark Mages, the Dark Guild would naturally cease to exist.”
Alcadios’s words made Newton twitch his lips. This was one way to go about it. He simply didn’t want to disturb Jelf, which was why he hadn’t sent anyone to continue searching for him. Besides, why bother searching? Just look where the dead bodies are piling up. However, Newton never expected this would lead to a misunderstanding among the kingdom’s people, which was quite embarrassing.
“Hey, what are you planning to do now?”
Mavis asked with amusement as she looked at Newton.
“Forget it. Let’s just say I’m building a big toy for the king. I’ll just oversee it and make a model.”
Let them build it; after all, such things couldn’t be completed overnight. Newton had confidence that he could create a model for the king to play with. As for whether it would be usable or not, they would find out in due time.
