The large bird was either an eagle or a falcon, and I couldn't tell for sure. For now, let's call it an eagle, as it's quite rare to see a falcon in the south. This Flowered Hawk seemed to be still young and wasn't very large, yet it kept circling behind a flock of pigeons without making a move, as if it had some purpose.
Just as this eagle was chasing the flock of pigeons over our Water Area, another eagle suddenly swooped down from not far away, right into the path of the pigeons! This one was Gray, diving like a gray arrow straight into the low-flying pigeons. In an instant, it caught one with its talons. To my surprise, after seizing its prey, this eagle did not fly away but continued to peck at the pigeon with its sharp beak in mid-air, blood spraying everywhere as the pigeon was clearly doomed. As the eagle flapped its wings and ascended into the sky, it suddenly released its talons, dropping the dead pigeon into the water below, where it was quickly swept away by the river.
The remaining pigeons scattered in all directions but soon regrouped and continued fleeing in a single direction. However, the previously mentioned Flowered Hawk accelerated and rushed ahead of the flock, driving them back! The poor pigeons had no choice but to change direction and flee once more.
Unfortunately, it seemed that the sight of blood had stirred something primal in the Gray Eagle. With a long cry, it dove again into the flock and caught another victim. After another chaotic pecking session, it dropped the dead pigeon just like before.
This was strange! It appeared that this Gray bird was not hunting for food; I had never seen anything like it before.
The dead pigeon fell with a thud right in front of a Great Raven not far from me. Instinctively, I glanced at its reaction. The Great Raven stared intently at the dead pigeon as if contemplating something. After a moment, its head turned towards the eagle in the sky, its dark eyes following the bird's movements.
Was the raven frozen in place? I wondered. When I turned back to look at the eagle again, I realized that three pigeons had already been killed. The Gray bird soared high again, waiting for its companion to drive the flock towards it; I knew another dive would follow soon—it was about to strike again!
"For killing's sake—what a brutal creature!" I murmured as I watched from below.
It was as if my words had been heard; at that moment, a black figure shot into the sky like an arrow—it was the Great Raven!
I was astonished. What was the Great Raven planning?
The raven headed straight for the Gray Eagle just as the flock of pigeons was being driven towards them. It became a gray arrow above and a black arrow below, both aimed at the flock of pigeons.
Perhaps due to the obstruction of the pigeons, the eagle did not notice the raven. As the raven approached near enough to intersect with the flock of pigeons, it let out a loud cry—“Caw!”—as if urging the pigeons to scatter.
As the flock dispersed, the eagle finally noticed this unexpected guest, but it was too late; two birds of similar size collided!
Bang! Feathers flew everywhere! The raven took a hit from below and rolled over before soaring upward at an angle while the Gray Eagle was knocked off course by several meters!
Thus, with the Great Raven's involvement, the "battle" quickly turned around. The raven closely followed behind the Gray bird, occasionally making aggressive moves toward it. The enraged eagle was forced to abandon its pursuit of pigeons and began chasing after the raven instead. The other eagle hesitated for a moment but eventually followed along in pursuit of the fleeing flock of pigeons after circling several times.
Everyone's eyes were fixed on the sky, clearly fascinated by the spirit of the crow, yet there was a hint of anxiety in the air. After all, there seemed to be no record in any book that a crow could defeat a Raptor.
Beside me, Sheng Xiong looked up and said, "Company Commander, this crow seems quite fearless! I wonder if it can take on that big bird?"
I honestly had no idea. While I knew that corvids had relatively advanced brains and that the Raven was strong and powerful with wings capable of reaching speeds of 50 kilometers per hour, I truly didn't know what the outcome would be against a Raptor.
Looking back at the sky, it was clear that the crow understood the gap between itself and its opponent. After its first collision with the Raptor, it no longer approached but instead opted for a sticky tactic. Whenever the eagle chased it, the crow would use its agility to escape. If the eagle attempted to leave the battlefield, the crow would provoke it or fly high to dive and peck at the eagle's tail. After several rounds of this, the eagle found itself in an awkward position—unable to catch the crow yet unwilling to retreat.
As time went on, the eagle grew increasingly impatient. The Great Raven indeed became bolder, even engaging in direct confrontations with the eagle several times. Perhaps the eagle had exhausted some energy chasing after a flock of pigeons or maybe it lacked experience. The once imposing Gray Eagle, which had mercilessly hunted pigeons, now appeared disheveled in the air and began emitting strange cries.
The Gray Eagle flew lower and slower, allowing the Great Raven to even peck at its head from above—a true miracle! We all gasped in admiration; where could such a fierce crow come from? Just as the Gray Eagle was slowly being "bullied" by the crow, I suddenly noticed a point in the sky behind it. What was that? It was Flower Hawk!
It turned out that the Gray Eagle's cries were a signal for Flower Hawk to return for assistance. The cunning Gray Eagle had deliberately turned its head to lure the Great Raven into exposing its back while Flower Hawk silently swooped down from above, targeting none other than the Great Raven!
Oh no! I thought.
At that moment, Jinghe and others also spotted the ambushing Flower Hawk and exclaimed in shock, "An ambush!"
"How despicable!"
"Even animals play tricks!"
Some even shouted warnings to the crow, though I wasn't sure if it could understand. Just then, the Gray Eagle suddenly turned around and engaged in combat with the Great Raven. I clearly saw that Flower Hawk would be diving down in mere seconds! The Gray Eagle was stalling for time—sandwiching attack!
My heart couldn't help but race for the Great Raven.
In this critical moment, unexpectedly, the Great Raven cawed twice and suddenly hooked its claws onto those of the eagle, ceasing its wing flapping and pulling the eagle down headfirst into the river!
Gray Eagle deliberately slowed down to lure Great Raven, and as a result, both birds lost momentum and plummeted. At that moment, Flower Hawk arrived just in time at the spot where the two birds had been entangled, but it swooped down to find nothing!
With a strange cry, Flower Hawk turned back into the air, while Gray Eagle was nearly dragged into the water! Gray Eagle was so frightened that it flapped its wings desperately to take off, but Great Raven had released its claws and leaped onto Gray Eagle's back, pecking at its head with a series of sharp jabs!
In pain, Gray Eagle let out a long howl and twisted its body, soaring high into the sky and shaking off the crow. Flower Hawk then flew alongside Gray Eagle, and the two eagles circled a few times as if discussing their battle strategy. After a moment, they dove toward the crow in a V formation!
An amusing scene unfolded! Seeing the two eagles coming at it together, the crow surprisingly turned around and flew away, landing right on the side of my Speedboat! It shook its wings and casually squawked at the two eagles.
It seemed that the two eagles were furious and, in their frustration, came charging toward me!
Watching the two feathered beasts approach with such intensity made me a bit nervous. What if they caused trouble for the warriors? I quickly patted Jinghe on the shoulder. "Prepare the horn!" Jinghe nodded in understanding. He swiftly aimed the Speedboat at the two Raptors and pulled the horn hard when they flew close. The loud honk startled both Raptors, causing them to scatter and fly away. They circled in the air for a while but never saw the crow take to the skies again before they finally left.
Turning back to look at the crow, I found it nonchalantly preening its ruffled feathers on the boat's edge.
"That's quite something!" Sheng Xiong exclaimed.
"Company Commander, it's injured!" Jinghe suddenly said after watching for a moment.
"Hmm?" I leaned in closer and indeed noticed that blood was seeping from the base of the crow's left wing; it must have been hurt during its tussle with Gray Eagle.
I instructed Sheng Xiong to fetch the unit's first aid kit from the toolbox. "Big Black, look how clever you are; you scared off those eagles! Let me bandage your wound; you should understand that, right?!" I waved some gauze and medicine in front of it.
The crow eyed me warily and flapped its wings, letting out a series of harsh caws as if unwilling to let me get close.
"Do we have any food? Toss something to grab its attention," I said to Jinghe. I knew this hefty guy often carried snacks with him; he would munch on them whenever he had a break during training.
"Company Commander, all I've got is Pudding." The fat guy pulled out a jelly pudding.
"Give it a try!" I took the Pudding, tore open the package, and poured it onto the hood of the Speedboat. The crow's dark eyes spun around a few times before it hopped over eagerly. As it began to enjoy the Pudding, I suddenly reached from behind and gently grabbed it. Surprisingly, it didn't seem alarmed at all and continued pecking at the Pudding.
Fearing it might bite me in a fit of anger, I quickly treated its wound, wrapping a bandage around it before letting it go.
To my surprise, the little guy didn't fly away. Instead, it hopped around on the Speedboat's hood for a bit, pecking at the surface before looking back at me.
I turned to Jinghe and asked, "Is there any more food?" With a sigh, Jinghe pulled out another Pudding. "This is the last one."
I opened the packaging and placed it in front of the crow. It happily grabbed it with one claw and started to eat.
"It loves Pudding so much; let's call it Pudding!" Sheng Xiong chuckled.
Pudding?! Hmm, that's a good name, especially for a warrior! I thought that perhaps once it finished the Pudding, it would embark on its own journey.
But no one could have guessed that from that moment on, Pudding would become intertwined with me and our Unit, accompanying us through many unforgettable days.
