What was happening?
Xiar suddenly felt a bone-chilling cold, every hair on his body standing on end. He heard a sharp whistling sound as a deadly arrow tore through the carriage.
"Meow!"
In the nick of time, Firefly leaped into action, transforming into a White Shadow. One leg landed on the rushing dark figure, deflecting its trajectory that was aimed directly at Xiar's chest, causing it to graze past his arm.
Creak!
Xiar heard a teeth-grinding collision sound. The Guardian Spirit Light surrounding him began to shake violently but remained intact, protecting him from any harm.
"Damn it, who is attacking me!" Xiar fumed, furious that such a terrifying danger would arise on what should have been a simple journey to Storm Harbor. He immediately ordered, "Get down! Staying in the carriage is pure suicide!"
The arrows were shot from the north. He quickly jumped off the carriage to the south side and easily spotted the assailants—several figures dressed in black with their faces covered.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
As arrows flew towards him, Xiar also drew his bow and began shooting back. His Master Level archery skills allowed him to instantly determine the trajectory and direction of the enemy's movements.
What happened next shocked those attackers; one of his arrows flew accurately through a gap in the trees no wider than a palm and pierced one of the black-clad figures straight through.
"There’s a Divine Archer!"
Xiar vaguely heard their conversation as they scattered, hiding behind the trees. After he took down a second archer, he could no longer hit any of them.
Then his gaze shifted nearby, where he saw a massive gray Forest Wolf, as large as a calf, engaged in a life-and-death struggle with four knights. The beast charged wildly, making it difficult for the knights to subdue it.
What astonished him was that there was a fluctuation of Source Power emanating from it!
"The aura it possesses—this is definitely radiation from the Source Gate!" Xiar's heart raced at this realization.
Source Power, the name of the energy within Source Crystal, is the source of power for all Spirit Masters, representing the fundamental Source Power of the earth.
Throughout the entire Spirit Master power system, whether releasing Spirit Technique or allowing a totem to Evolution, it all hinges on Source Power.
Indeed, Source Power is the root of a Spirit Master. Without it, countless Spirit Masters would be left in despair.
However, now, a mere non-Totem Beast possesses Source Power, which is an utterly unreasonable situation!
Whoosh!
Xiar swiftly drew his bow and shot an arrow that struck its back fiercely, penetrating deeply and leaving only the fletching exposed.
"Fortunately, this monster hasn't been fully enhanced; it has only been slightly affected by radiation," Xiar sighed in relief, realizing that the creature was not as terrifying as he had imagined.
In future scenarios, the opening of the Source Gate spread like nuclear radiation, causing countless beings to undergo essential changes, rapidly Evolutioning, and eventually leading to the emergence of wild divine beasts!
Otherwise, humanity wouldn't have suffered such a Massacre, with endless Evolution monsters casting a nightmarish shadow over the world, leading to the destruction of entire cities!
Awooo!
The giant wolf let out a mournful howl, swatting away a knight who had attempted to pounce on it. Without hesitation, it turned and charged at the human who had harmed it.
Whoosh!
Xiar remained unfazed, calmly standing his ground as he drew his bow again. However, this arrow was easily dodged by the giant wolf.
Before he could shoot a second arrow, the wolf was already less than twenty meters away from him, capable of reaching him in under a second.
“Firefly!” Xiar said in a low voice.
A white figure suddenly appeared on his shoulder, and a mysterious purple light flickered in its sapphire-like eyes as it activated its ability—Fox Spirit!
The giant wolf was instantly controlled by an invisible wave of mental energy. Its originally fierce and vicious gaze became vacant, and although it managed to break free in less than half a second, it was already too late.
A sharp steel arrow pierced through its eye socket, spinning as it entered. The fatal wound caused the wolf to collapse to the ground, sliding several meters before coming to rest at Xiar's feet.
He drew the sword hanging at his waist and coldly thrust it into the wolf's eye, halting its struggles immediately.
A faint white energy drifted from the corpse, merging into his forehead. A translucent Interface appeared, and the Evolution Points displayed a jump from 15 to 5!
"Impressive! It turns out that monsters affected by Source Power radiation can provide so many Evolution Points!" A surge of endless joy welled up in Xiar's heart.
As the name suggests, Evolution Points are the mysterious power that allows living beings to achieve Evolution. Previously, when he killed the guarding Vampire Vine at Bruce Laboratory, he only received 0.5 Evolution Points.
Now he had gained 1 point. It was clear that the giant wolf was significantly weaker than that Plant Totem. What could be the difference between them? Was it related to their potential for future Evolution?
"Totem!"
One of the black-clad figures who had initially planned to charge forward suddenly shouted in terror and turned to flee without hesitation.
The others quickly followed suit, disappearing in an instant!
"Wow, these ordinary people actually know about totems. Tsk tsk, isn't this clearly telling me that their mastermind is a Spirit Master?"
Xiar quietly watched them leave. As the saying goes, "Don't chase a desperate foe." He had no intention of risking his life just to hunt down enemies.
Clop clop clop!
The sound of hooves echoed as a squad of Black-armored Knights galloped in from the east, quickly coming to a halt upon seeing him.
The leader glanced at the emblem on the carriage, lifted the steel mask that only revealed his eyes, and asked in a deep voice, "You must be Young Master Xiar of the Mestlin Family, right?"
"Indeed," Xiar nodded. He pointed at the two knights lying on the ground and questioned sternly, "I need an explanation. We were ambushed on the way, resulting in one dead and two severely injured!"
The knight jumped down from his horse and removed his helmet with a composed demeanor. "Apologies, Young Master Xiar. We are also pursuing this band of marauding thieves."
He looked at the massive wolf's corpse on the ground, a flicker of astonishment crossing his eyes. "I didn't expect Young Master Xiar to be able to take down such a fierce beast. Truly worthy of being Baron Bougiano's child!"
"Are these ambushes common?" Xiar inquired.
"Very common. There have been five attacks within ten days, resulting in dozens of deaths!" The knight's face was weary as he rubbed his temples. "We have been tirelessly on the move, but we don't understand how those people managed to tame such terrifying beasts. Even elite soldiers would be killed upon encountering them!"
"The appearance of these horrifying mutated beasts is too strange; no one has seen them before, as if they just materialized out of thin air..."
Xiar sighed inwardly. The Source Gate had clearly been partially opened, and the leaking Source Power had caused numerous cultivated creatures to undergo some form of Mutated Evolution.
They were then dispatched to assist ordinary martial artists, creating chaos and slaughter across various regions.
Now, time was running out for him. He needed to obtain that Treasure as soon as possible.
This would allow him to create a large number of totems as cannon fodder, gain Evolution Points by defeating Mutated Beasts, and then enable Firefly to complete its Evolution quickly, thereby strengthening himself exponentially!
