Silverfish scurried up the Giant Spirit Warrior's body, biting fiercely. With a stomp of its foot, the Giant Spirit Warrior shook off many of the little fish and crushed them underfoot.
The dark lake water swirled and coalesced into a curvaceous woman, entangled with the Giant Spirit Warrior. The idiom "water comes to cover the earth" was fully embodied in this battle. The Giant Spirit Warrior raised clouds of sand to bury the Water Maiden, and after several rounds of struggle, the water formation broke. The Giant Spirit Warrior also paid a heavy price, losing an arm and a leg.
Li Xiaonan laughed, "Little Jiu, how did you come up with this solution?"
Nine Phoenix's face turned slightly red. "It wasn't my idea; it was something Phoenix Maiden said when she saw the arrangement of the Five Elements Formation." Li Xiaonan nodded and handed Nine Phoenix over to Ling Kui before soaring down to kick the water giant, exploding it with a single blow.
The last two formations of the Five Elements Formation were thus shattered.
Li Xiaonan looked curiously at the five differently colored flags that had suddenly appeared on the ground. Inner Thoughts: Could these be the tools for setting up the Five Elements Formation?
He waved to Nine Phoenix, signaling Ling Kui and the others to fly down.
"Little Jiu, what are these five flags?"
"Oh, these are low-grade Celestial Artifacts, Five Element Flags, used to set up the Five Elements Formation. However, since you've already broken it, the flags are useless unless refined again with the unique Nine Yang True Fire of immortals." He decided to be obedient from now on and do whatever this Celestial Lord said.
What had once been a joke from Phoenix Maiden unexpectedly became reality.
Li Xiaonan smiled at Nine Phoenix without explaining; it was merely a beautiful misunderstanding. He cleverly asked another question, "Little Jiu, are there any other formations on Kou Long Mountain?"
"In response to your question, there are none. If you follow this small path, you'll find a cave where Dragon Immortal is held." Nine Phoenix answered honestly.
Li Xiaonan suddenly found this boy quite adorable; perhaps he could take him back as a companion for Dog Egg. He collected the Five Element Flags and intended to leave but noticed Nine Phoenix tugging at his sleeve while gazing at the calm lake. "What's wrong, Little Jiu?"
"I... I want to eat the Silver River Fish here..." He awkwardly expressed his desire, fearing that if he displeased the Celestial Lord, he might end up as a meal.
Li Xiaonan thought that since they were already close to Father-in-law's place, it would be nice to take a break now. He smiled and said, "Go ahead!"
Nine Phoenix never expected Li Xiaonan to agree so easily. Overjoyed, he transformed back into his original form, a large, bald, and rather ugly bird, diving down to peck at fish in the lake.
"Spirit, is my outfit messy? Is my hair disheveled?"
Ling Kui chuckled softly, "Why are you more nervous than I am? We're here to rescue our father. Besides, my Xiao Nan will always be the most handsome."
Li Xiaonan blushed as he looked at Ling Kui. He had no resistance to her smile; she usually appeared cold, like winter itself. But if winter had arrived, could spring be far behind?
Mei Qingdan shook his head and said to them, "Boy and girl, the old man will take you this far. Although there isn't the mysterious treasure I imagined here, the most important Spirit Herb has been found. I'm off to refine some pills now. Boy, this Medicine Spirit Baby is a gift for you. If you need any herbs in the future, just ask it; it will guide you."
Li Xiaonan looked at the little white creature in his hand that resembled a ginseng. It had two round little black dots spinning around and a ginseng flower atop its head, making it quite adorable.
A childish voice suddenly reached his ears—it was a little girl’s voice. "Finally saying goodbye to the old man... sigh... I wonder how this new master will torment me..." The little ginseng flower drooped down as the Medicine Spirit Baby sighed.
He stared blankly at Mei Qingdan, who appeared indifferent and clearly did not hear what the Medicine Spirit Baby had just said. His inner thoughts raced: I’m sure only I could hear it back then with the Soul-Claiming Vines; why can I still hear it now? What’s going on?
"This is a spirit ball; just keep the Medicine Spirit Baby inside it when you're not using it," Mei Qingdan said as he took out two objects that looked remarkably like Poké Balls from a popular game. He continued, "You can also use one to contain Nine Phoenix."
"Thank you, Old Man Mei." Mei Qingdan waved his hand and flew away on his gourd. He didn’t even ask for Li Xiaonan's name before leaving—a decision he would regret in future memories.
The Medicine Spirit Baby squirmed in Li Xiaonan's palm and muttered to itself, "I have to stay in the ball again? It's so small inside with no Spiritual Energy at all; it's suffocating! Boo hoo hoo..." It even began to cry.
Li Xiaonan lifted the Medicine Spirit Baby up to his eyes and saw its two little black beans shining brightly. He recalled a funny image he once saw of Pikachu stuffed inside a Poké Ball—it looked quite pitiful. He sighed and said, "Little one, if you prefer being outside, then stay outside." With that, he stored the spirit ball into his Soul Ring.
"You... you... can understand what I'm saying?" The ginseng flower atop the Medicine Spirit Baby perked up.
Li Xiaonan nodded and placed it on his shoulder.
"Xiao Nan, you can communicate with this little one?" Ling Kui poked at the Medicine Spirit Baby with her delicate fingers; girls were always curious about cute things.
Li Xiaonan smiled helplessly. "Yeah, I don't really know how it happened either, but I guess it's a good thing."
"Master, I’m done eating." Nine Phoenix transformed back into her human form, holding a number of Silver River Fish in her hands. The dried Silver River Fish looked like silver needles, having lost their moisture.
"Little Jiu, haven’t you eaten enough? You still need to pack some more?" Li Xiaonan laughed, though the Spirit Medicine Baby on his shoulder was trembling slightly.
Feeling a bit shy, Nine Phoenix scratched her head. "Master, these are for you. The Silver River Fish go into a dormant state once they leave the water. You can use them as hidden weapons; with a push of True Essence Power, they’ll latch onto anything and burrow into living beings, racing through their blood vessels."
"You little rascal, that’s quite devious. I like it. Gather all the Silver River Fish from the lake; I can definitely make use of this." He handed Nine Phoenix a Storage Belt. The Spirit Medicine Baby on his shoulder quietly scratched Li Xiaonan’s ear and said, "I... want to go into the Spirit Ball."
Nine Phoenix felt a bit embarrassed from the praise and suddenly noticed the Spirit Medicine Baby on Li Xiaonan's shoulder. "Spirit Ginseng!" she gulped, and the Medicine Spirit Baby trembled even more.
She pleaded, "Good Master, I will listen to you from now on without any second thoughts. Please put me back in the Spirit Ball; I... I'm going to be eaten... boohoo..."
Li Xiaonan found it amusing and said to Nine Phoenix, "This is the Medicine Spirit Baby I just acquired; you’re not allowed to eat it, understand?"
Nine Phoenix swallowed hard and nodded before heading to the lakeside to complete Li Xiaonan's task.
The Medicine Spirit Baby sighed in relief. "You scared me! Master is truly impressive; even Ninth-Order Spirit Beasts listen to him. I'm so happy."
Li Xiaonan smiled as he sat beside Ling Kui, watching the busy Nine Phoenix while chatting with the Medicine Spirit Baby.
It turned out that the scientific name of the Medicine Spirit Baby was Spirit Ginseng. It was an exquisite type of ginseng that absorbed the essence of heaven and earth. Due to its rarity, cultivating it peacefully was quite difficult. However, if one day it could achieve success and attain immortality, it would undoubtedly be a dark horse among many.
Spirit Ginseng was fortunate to be with Li Xiaonan, and Li Xiaonan was even luckier; with Spirit Ginseng by his side, would he ever lack elixirs?
Once Nine Phoenix had gathered enough Silver River Fish, Li Xiaonan and his companions flew along a narrow path into the mountains.
On both sides were yellow rocks, and the narrow mountain trail only allowed glimpses of blue sky. Li Xiaonan held Ling Kui's hand and gazed at the occasional white clouds drifting by in the sky, pondering whether his life would also drift aimlessly like those clouds.
After flying for about ten minutes, Li Xiaonan finally saw the cave that Nine Phoenix had mentioned—the Kou Long Cave where the Dragon Immortal and Spirit Weapon were being held.
The two people, a bird, and some grass walked into the cave.
The scene inside Kou Long Cave was completely different from what Li Xiaonan had imagined. He had thought that his father-in-law was being treated inhumanely, perhaps bound by thick chains with half of his body submerged in icy water. However, the reality was far from that.
Kou Long Cave was spacious, with a circular opening about thirty centimeters in diameter in the cave wall. Light streamed in from outside, illuminating a white-haired man sitting cross-legged. Dressed in a spotless white robe, he had his eyes closed and his brows slightly furrowed, as if troubled by something indescribable. His sharp eyebrows accentuated his handsome and dignified features.
Li Xiaonan squeezed Ling Kui's soft little hand, signaling her to speak.
Ling Kui looked at the man with a complex expression. He was someone with whom she shared a close bond, yet Spirit Weapon felt so foreign to her; he was merely a name—her mother's husband. At least her heart had found peace; she no longer harbored hatred toward Spirit Weapon.
Taking a deep breath, Ling Kui softly said, "Father!"
Spirit Weapon suddenly opened his eyes. His ice-blue gaze carried an inherent pride. His lips moved as he murmured, "Ning...er?" Then he shook his head and smiled bitterly. "Didn’t I say you shouldn’t come? Why didn’t you listen?"
Ling Kui felt torn between joy and sorrow. She was happy that after more than a hundred years, this man still remembered her mother’s name, but sad that he hadn’t called her by her name or any of the expected titles.
"Father, we’ve come to rescue you! Please come with us!" Ling Kui stepped forward.
Spirit Weapon shook his head. "You should go. I won’t be leaving here."
Li Xiaonan felt a deep frustration inside him; none of what he had imagined was correct. It was one thing not to play the heroic role of breaking chains to save his father-in-law, but shouldn’t a father-daughter reunion involve tears and embraces?
He finally understood from whom Ling Kui inherited her stubbornness. Smiling, he tugged at Ling Kui's hand, winked at her, and then stepped forward to bow before Spirit Weapon. "Li Xiaonan pays respects to Father-in-law!"
