Room 2424 in Building 44 belonged to Rong Xiaoxiao. When I rushed over after hearing the news, I found a crowd gathered at her doorstep. In that building, each floor only had two households—one was unoccupied, and the other was hers.
As I approached, I saw Rong Xiaoxiao's body being carried out. A white sheet covered her slender form, and perhaps it was the stretcher that made her appear so shriveled beneath it.
Rong Xiaoxiao had only one mother, whose wails filled the air as she clung to her daughter’s body. "My Little, how could you leave me like this? What am I supposed to do alone? Little, who killed you? Who did this?"
"Ms. Rong, we will get to the bottom of this. Please take a moment to rest," a female officer said as she tried to help Rong Mama. But Rong Mama wouldn’t let go of the sheet; she forcefully pulled it down, and I instinctively craned my neck to look, nearly retching at what I saw.
Rong Xiaoxiao's mouth was agape in shock, her eyes wide with disbelief, her face drained of color. Her abdomen had been cut open, and her hands were curled stiffly at her sides, exposing the empty cavity within. Only a few small white bugs wriggled inside, resembling maggots.
I quickly covered my mouth and turned away. Just then, I noticed a dark mist swirling above Rong Xiaoxiao's forehead, within which flickered the image of a Red Skull. But before I could examine it closely, the police covered her with the sheet again.
Gasps of shock rippled through the crowd. Some began speculating about curses or a deranged killer; after all, who would resort to such horrific methods? Others suggested it might be suicide, though that seemed highly unlikely.
Having seen such a gruesome scene on an empty stomach early in the morning had completely ruined my appetite. Rong Mama was in such distress that the police couldn’t even take her statement and decided to take her to the hospital instead.
Realizing I wouldn’t learn anything useful here, I joined the throng of onlookers heading down in the elevator. At that moment, a woman claiming to live upstairs spoke up. "I've noticed that girl from the Rong family has changed so much over these past few months—she went from being so plump to so thin. And her tone has changed too; she used to be shy but now she barely acknowledges anyone and hangs around with young delinquents. She must have gotten involved with the wrong crowd and faced retaliation."
"Now that you mention it, something comes to mind," another woman chimed in. We all turned our attention to her as she cleared her throat and lowered her voice. "Just last night, I went out to buy food for my daughter. On my way back, I saw that girl arguing with someone at the corner of the community. Their voices were raised; it sounded like they were fighting about something like 'I won't do it; I insist; I can give more.' From the shadows cast by the streetlight, it looked like a man."
"That’s probably it," the first woman said more confidently now, convinced that Rong Xiaoxiao's reckless behavior had led to her demise. "Anxin is so lucky; she graduated and found such a good man. Anxin, when are you going to treat us to your wedding?"
I didn't expect them to suddenly turn the conversation towards me, and my face turned red instantly. The aunt laughed, "Still shy? Your mother can't wait to marry you off. I heard your boyfriend is a senior executive; life won't be bad for you, Anxin, good job!"
"…"
When did Jun Chong become a senior executive? I had no idea.
I made my way home, wanting to tell him about Rong Xiaoxiao.
"Jun Chong."
As soon as I opened the door, I called out for him. He had gone out after I fell asleep last night, and when I woke up this morning, he still hadn't returned. I shouted as I walked into the bedroom and was greeted by the sight of a handsome man undressing—imagine the alluring scene for yourself.
Although it wasn't the first time I'd seen him like this, I still felt shy every time. "Why are you undressing so early? Aren't you afraid someone will walk in?"
"Who else is there besides you?"
Jun Chong leisurely put on the clothes I had bought for him. Initially, I burned the clothes directly because people usually send items to their ancestors by burning them during rituals, so I did the same. Then I playfully tapped his forehead. "Even though I don't have a physical body, with six beads and my own cultivation, wearing human clothes isn't a problem."
"A ghost who admires you!" I laughed as I stepped forward to button his shirt. "This morning, Rong Xiaoxiao died. I went to see her body; she was disemboweled, and we still don't know the cause of death."
"Most likely she was eaten." Jun Chong raised an eyebrow gently, stroking my cheek with his finger. "I found the last bead last night; tonight I'll go retrieve it. If all goes well, we can unlock the First Seal on the fifteenth of this month."
Hearing this made me overjoyed. "Then I'll sleep more during the day and keep you company at night."
"No. This time you stay behind. If everything goes smoothly, I'll be back the day after tomorrow."
"Is it going to take that long? Is it hard to get the items?"
Jun Chong nodded, "It is a bit difficult, so I feel at ease with you staying here."
"No, given the danger from Tianshan last time, I can't let you go alone."
"Anxin, listen to me." Jun Chong cupped my face in his hands. "I know you're worried about me, but I'm even more worried about you. If you're with me, I'll be distracted. I promise I'll be back by midnight at the latest, okay?"
I knew I couldn't interfere with his decision. I was worried but felt helpless. "You said it; I'll wait for you to come back before sleeping. If you break your promise this time, I'll commit suicide immediately."
Jun Chong stiffened and hugged me tightly. "Don't worry; this time Rong Zhi will be with me, so you can rest assured."
"Shizui is coming too?" I pushed Jun Chong away. "There's only my study left in this room; I'll tidy it up so he has a place to stay when he arrives."
Jun Chong looked unhappy, pulling me back like a little chick and raising an eyebrow in displeasure. "Why are you so eager for him to come?"
"It's not like he doesn't have a place to stay. It's uncomfortable to stay at a hotel outside, and it's more convenient for you two to discuss things together." As I said this, I noticed Jun Chong pouting and suddenly burst into laughter. "Are you jealous?"
Jun Chong released me and climbed onto the bed by himself. "Do I look like that kind of ghost?"
"Come on, what's wrong with admitting you're jealous? It's not like you've never been jealous before."
Since we were bickering, I ended up lying on the bed for another day. After dinner with Jun Chong that night, he left. Looking at the empty room felt boring, so I decided to chat with Lin You.
Not long after, the doorbell rang. I found it strange that someone would come at this hour. When I opened the door, it turned out to be the delivery guy. "Gu Anxin? I have a package for you."
"My?"
I looked and saw Pet Delivery, with a fluffy white pet squatting in the cage, its big eyes staring at me. The moment I saw it, I felt a wave of joy. If I wasn't mistaken, this was the little dog I encountered in the graveyard.
I quickly signed the paperwork and carried the cage inside. As soon as I opened it, the little creature leaped to my feet, rubbing its cheek against my leg. I patted its head, and it came over to lick my hand.
"How did you end up here? That old man didn't call me; I thought you had already returned to your owner!"
Suddenly, I noticed a letter inside the cage. Holding the little one, I sat on the sofa and opened the letter. It seemed to be from the dog's owner, who explained that they could no longer keep it due to immigration. They were reluctant to send it to Pet Center but had heard about me from Graveyard Uncle and felt I was someone trustworthy. So they found out my address and sent it over.
I didn't find this situation strange at all; I inexplicably liked this little dog very much. It was a Silver Fox Dog, resembling a fox with its pure white fur, fluffy and adorably plump.
I cradled the puppy on the sofa. "Since that's the case, you'll stay with me from now on! I promise to take good care of you!"
With the puppy around, I suddenly felt less bored. Before going to bed, I put it back in the cage and poured some milk for it. "Just make do tonight; I'll buy you some essentials tomorrow."
I turned off the lights and went back to my room to sleep. The night sky was dazzling with stars, and the moonlight bathed the earth, casting a rounded shadow on the floor of my room, while something fan-shaped danced on the wall.
Sharp claws gently grazed my palm, instantly creating a cut. Bright red blood formed droplets that floated up before disappearing with a wave of my hand, leaving only two words behind.
At that moment when the figure vanished, I turned over in bed. Though not deeply asleep, I couldn't fully wake up; it felt like I was dreaming or perhaps being pressed down by a ghost because I couldn't move.
As I opened my eyes in confusion, I was startled to see a woman lying on top of me. Her long black hair hung in front of my face, revealing only part of her features—pale as snow—with white markings scattered across her face like scars. Her eyes were wide open, glimmering with green light behind her hair. She grinned ominously at me.
Since Mumu, it had been a long time since I'd experienced sleep paralysis. Shifting my gaze downward, I noticed her abdomen was bare in a large patch, and in shock, I exclaimed, "Are you Rong Xiaoxiao?"
She nodded stiffly, then turned to look out the window, whispering two words, "Save me."
"Save you?"
I was confused, feeling a lightness in my body as she floated toward the window, her white dress stained with blood.
"That."
Her hoarse voice trembled with fear. I sensed her anxiety; perhaps there was something out there that frightened her. So, I threw off the covers and got out of bed to take a look.
Outside my window, I could see Rong Xiaoxiao's apartment building. My home was on the 18th floor, while hers was on the 24th. It was a bit of a stretch to see clearly, but she was pointing down below. Outside, it was pitch dark, with only the streetlight on the first floor illuminating the area. I couldn't tell what she was indicating.
"Where?"
"That."
Just one word again. I leaned closer to see but couldn't make anything out. So, I opened the window and leaned out. "There's nothing there! Are you sure you're not mistaken?"
When I turned back to look at her, I was taken aback to see her grinning at me. She grabbed hold of my body with surprising strength and hurled me straight out.
"Ah—help!"
Everything happened too quickly for me to react; my body plummeted downward.
