"Zhou, we can't do anything unethical. Those two young kids haven't done anything to us," Fifth said, frowning, his hands nervously twisting together as he walked at the back of the group.
At the front, Zhou Huai ignored Fifth, repeatedly polishing his long knife, its blade gleaming with a cold light.
Beside him, Qiangzi hefted a Galvanized Steel Pipe in his hands and impatiently cursed, "Are you annoying or what? If you don't want to go, just get lost and figure out how to survive on your own."
Fifth, scolded by the younger Qiangzi, didn't dare lift his head. He stammered for a while but couldn't manage to say a coherent word.
Fat Boss patted Fifth on the shoulder and comforted him, "Brother, it's not that I'm criticizing you. The world is different now; we have to think about ourselves first. Besides, those two young ones aren't being fair either. We can't even find a place to stay for the night, and they're hogging all the food and drink. Just think about it; how many days has it been since we had a proper meal?"
"Well, we still can't just rob them," Fifth sighed heavily, glancing at the others. Only the truck driver named Gao Yang looked momentarily dimmed and shook his head at Fifth, signaling him to stop talking.
Another young man named Chengcai was eager and followed closely behind Zhou Huai with a motorcycle chain in hand. He whispered, "That woman is pretty hot. Damn it, it's been months since I've been with a woman."
Qiangzi shot him a glance and grinned as he put an arm around Chengcai's shoulders. "Bro, if we're going together, let's make it fancy later—three of us. What do you say?"
Chengcai chuckled and nodded enthusiastically, his eyes fervently fixed on the bar across the wide street.
Fifth heard this clearly and twisted his face in discomfort. Qiangzi turned around and shot him a fierce glare. "Old man, if you dare delay us from getting things done, I'll take care of you first. I really don't know what Zhou brought you along for."
Zhou Huai turned around and coldly glared at Qiangzi. "If you can build a shelter or dig a Cave Dwelling better than me, then I'll leave Fifth behind. How about that? Do you have anything in your head besides those thoughts?"
Qiangzi seemed somewhat intimidated by Zhou Huai's words; he lost his earlier bravado and sulked into silence.
Seeing an opportunity to speak up again, Fifth opened his mouth but was quickly silenced by Zhou Huai.
"Fifth, you shut up too. Just enjoy your food and drink quietly. If you don't want to participate, wait here. If you can't stand us, feel free to leave on your own."
"Fine, I get it. Whatever you say goes," Fifth replied dejectedly, shaking his head and falling silent.
Gao Yang handed a cigarette butt to Fifth and said, "Uncle, you stay here and smoke. Don't go over there."
Fifth took the cigarette end and nodded sadly.
Earlier, Zhou Huai had led them away from the bar, but they hadn't gone far. They cautiously entered a hot pot restaurant diagonally across the street, dealt with two Zombies, and nibbled on some moldy pancakes before starting to monitor the bar across the street.
Zhou Huai had a pair of binoculars, which allowed him to see the bar clearly from this distance. He noticed a young girl coming out of the bar, but no one else followed. To be safe, he waited another hour, yet still no one returned. Zhou Huai pondered for a moment and guessed that the kid was probably bluffing; it seemed that there were only that pair of young people in the bar with no one else around. So he decided to seize that truckload of supplies and take over the bar as their new base.
Their group had been wandering around the city for a week, encountering Zombies everywhere, especially in the last two days when they had become increasingly numerous. The Fat Boss had suggested leaving the city together, but Zhou Huai disagreed, believing that it would be just as bad outside. Since both inside and outside the city were similar, why risk their lives to escape? After all, this place was practically a ghost town now; as long as he could find a suitable hiding spot for himself and these few people, surviving shouldn't be too much of a problem.
"Zhou Ge, what do you think we should do next?" Qiangzi asked.
"We'll do what we need to do; what kind of waves can a young guy make?" Zhou Huai replied with a strange look at him. "I was worried there might be more people; now that I've confirmed it's just one guy and one girl, what schemes do we need?"
"Hehe, I told you so. So are we going now?" Qiangzi said excitedly while fiddling with a sharpened screwdriver.
"Yeah." Zhou Huai nodded and turned to the others. "Chengcai, you and Qiangzi go over together. Stick close to the wall and try not to be seen. Old Guo, you and Gao Yang come with me. Fifth, you wait here; I'll call you when we're done."
Fifth responded with a frown and sat down heavily.
Qiangzi and Chengcai received their orders and quickly ran along the base of the building, keeping low as they crossed the street. In less than two minutes, they had made it past the roundabout and hidden in the shadows beside the bar. Zhou Huai put down his binoculars and handed Cutter to Gao Yang while he walked ahead empty-handed. The Fat Boss wiped his shiny bald head and followed along with his Galvanized Steel Pipe.
At that moment, Chao Yifan and Jinhua were on the outdoor balcony preparing Molotov cocktails. Chao Tianwang wasn't foolish; he knew those people wouldn't give up easily, so he returned to the bar to think of strategies. Initially, he considered moving their supplies back again, but that wouldn't help—they would still need to move out eventually. Plus, they only had two men on their side while there were six big guys across from them. Chao Tianwang anxiously paced back and forth while Little Gold watched on with concern.
"Yi Fan, do you think they'll really come back?" Jinhua asked from her seat, hugging her legs and blinking her big eyes. Although she was worried too, seeing Chao Yifan there gave her some comfort.
Chao Tianwang forced a bitter smile and said, "If you found a place to hide that also had plenty of food and water—and it was owned by just one man and one girl—what would you think?"
Little Gold pursed her beautiful lips in worry and replied, "That's true... could we negotiate with them and share some supplies?"
"It's impossible. They clearly have the strength to take everything, so why would they bother discussing it with us?" Chao Yifan sighed helplessly, affectionately ruffling Jinhua's hair. "I never expected that while the Zombies were still around, the living would come knocking on our door."
"Yeah, I think... the living are much more dangerous than the Zombies," Jinhua said, sticking out her little tongue thoughtfully.
"The problem now is that we don't know when Dahu and the others will be back. What if they come in the middle of the night? We won't be able to drive in, and if we want to leave, we'll probably have to split up from those two. Plus, it's not safe outside..." Chao Tianwang found himself caught in a dilemma, anxiously tugging at his hair.
Jinhua scanned the bar's lobby and suddenly her eyes lit up. "I have an idea!"
"Huh? What idea?" Chao Tianwang looked up, puzzled.
"The fire bottles you threw away when we came back yesterday! If they can burn so many Zombies to ashes, why can't they stop six living people?" Little Gold exclaimed excitedly.
"That seems like a plan..." Chao Tianwang rolled his eyes and began to ponder carefully.
"It'll definitely work! Think about it: if we set the outside on fire, they won't have time to put it out, right? After all, there are still Zombies out there!"
"The key point is... those bottles aren't made of alcohol; they won't burn for long. The Zombies don't know how to hide. If we throw the bottles on the ground, they'll just flare up for a moment and won't catch fire," Chao Tianwang shook his head, dismissing the suggestion.
Little Gold anxiously slapped his forehead and murmured, "What if we lure the Zombies over... let them help us block those living people..."
Chao Tianwang listened intently.
