The ambulance and SUV were parked at the intersection southwest of the roundabout. Jiang He mechanically opened the car door, his eyes blankly staring at the dazzling flames and the swarm of Zombies. The window of one side of the SUV rolled down, revealing Song Yao, whose eyes were filled with terror. They had noticed something unusual on their way back to the bar; the once quiet and deserted streets were now infested with Zombies, forcing them to change their route, which delayed their return to the bar by an hour. As they gradually approached the roundabout, they realized that the place had transformed into a nightmare.
"It seems something happened after you left," Dr. An said calmly as always. It was evident from the expressions of the two young people that this place had not looked like hell before.
Song Yao trembled as she covered her mouth, her body slightly shaking. She struggled to control her emotions and asked the equally dazed Jiang He, "They won't... be..."
Jiang He shook his head without answering and turned back to start the vehicle.
"What are you doing?" An Zheng frowned, fearing that Jiang He might do something impulsive.
"Our two companions are still out there. I have to go save them."
"How are you going to save them? Don't be reckless; look at the number of Zombies. Even if you drove a tank, you might not be able to get through."
"Still, we have to try. They might be okay."
The three adults in the car fell silent, gazing at the faint light appearing on the horizon, their faces somewhat twisted with worry.
An Zheng's son quietly played with his fingers in the back seat. He lifted his little head and pointed toward the west side of the street, saying, "Mom, there are people over there."
Song Yao and An Zheng were taken aback and followed the child's gaze. Indeed, two Sneaky figures appeared on one side of the street, crouching as they emerged from a shop.
Most of the Zombies on the street were clustered around the open space in front of the bar and in front of a KTV across from it. The location where the figures were standing was farther away from the flames, and they silently crept out without attracting any attention from the Zombies.
Jiang He squinted and asked, "Yao Yao, do those figures look like Yi Fan and Jinhua to you? They don't seem to resemble them to me."
"They're two men," An Zheng replied flatly. "Are they not your companions?"
"Not really. But they showed up here... we need to ask them," Jiang He said as he turned off the engine, grabbed the Fire Axe, and got out of the car. Song Yao jumped out beside him and added, "I'll go with you."
An Zheng didn't stop them; he simply reminded them, "Be careful. If you get discovered, hurry back. I can't wait here for you."
The two nodded and quickly ran into the side road, chasing after the figures.
The figures were none other than the fortunate survivors, Fifth and Gao Yang. They had witnessed Chengcai and Fat Boss's deaths at the hotpot restaurant and had seen Zhou Huai and Qiangzi chased into the KTV. They didn't dare to go outside, holding their breath and hiding for over half an hour until the Zombies in front of the hotpot restaurant gathered on the other side of the roundabout, allowing them to sneak out.
The area outside the bar and KTV was crowded with Zombies, and Zhou Huai's fate remained uncertain. After discussing it briefly, Gao Yang and Fifth decided it was best to escape on their own. Just as they turned around a corner, they were stopped by an axe and a shovel.
Fifth and Gao Yang were startled, thinking it was Zhou Huai and Qiangzi blocking their way. They looked up only to find two young men.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Jiang He asked first, then felt it was odd; he wasn't a police officer to be questioning others.
Song Yao quickly followed up with a more pertinent question, "Has anyone been bitten?"
Gao Yang and Fifth exchanged glances and quickly shook their heads.
Gao Yang seemed to think of something, raising his hands to show he was unarmed. He asked, "Are you with the people from the bar?"
Jiang He and Song Yao exchanged a glance before nodding. "Have you seen them?" Jiang He asked.
"I have," Gao Yang replied.
"Are they still alive?" Song Yao asked urgently.
"I don't know... can we change the place where we're talking?" Gao Yang glanced at the nearby Horde of Zombies and couldn't help but shiver.
To be cautious, Jiang He didn't take the two back to the car but instead turned into a mobile police station around the corner. Fifth and Gao Yang didn't hold back and recounted everything they had done since arriving here. When they mentioned Zhou Huai and his group attempting to seize the bar, despite Fifth's insistence that he had tried to dissuade them, both Jiang He and Song Yao's expressions darkened.
"You mean to say that you six planned to rob us of our supplies?" Jiang He gritted his teeth, tightening his grip on the Fire Axe.
"Four and a half; Uncle didn't go, and I ran back halfway," Gao Yang waved his hand, explaining casually.
Jiang He struggled to calm himself. At one moment, an uncontrollable rage surged within him, prompting him to grip the Fire Axe tighter. If not for his rationality prevailing, he would have swung the axe at the two in front of him without hesitation.
"What about your other friends?" Song Yao noticed Jiang He's agitation and quickly interjected.
"Two are dead, and two were chased into that KTV," Gao Yang assessed the two with a discerning eye, seemingly calculating something in his mind.
For a moment, the small police station fell silent; none of the four spoke, creating an awkward atmosphere.
"Your friends are quite ruthless; they attracted so many monsters just to stop our people from entering the bar," Gao Yang shrugged, breaking the silence.
"Them?" Jiang He asked incredulously.
"Yeah, your friends threw a lot of Molotov Cocktails; the fire outside was caused by them. They even blew up a car, and then the Horde of Zombies showed up," Gao Yang pointed through the window at the bar's outdoor second floor. "They threw it from there; I bet all the liquor in the bar is burned."
"We really don't want to do anything immoral," Fifth lamented with a sorrowful face, sighing as he tried to defend himself.
"Uncle, stop explaining," Gao Yang sighed and lowered his head.
"Are you saying that the bar's door has never opened? Is that right?" Song Yao suddenly focused on the key point and asked quickly.
"Yes, even though the Zombies are all there, it seems they haven't been able to get in," Gao Yang nodded.
Jiang He lifted his face, a glimmer of hope igniting in his eyes. "They must still be alive!"
"What do you plan to do?" Gao Yang asked.
"What do you mean?" Jiang He shot a wary glance at Gao Yang.
"If you're planning to rescue your companions... I can help, but I have one request," Gao Yang said.
"You dare to make demands of me?" Jiang He laughed in anger.
"It's not a demand; we want to survive too. Although we've done bad things to your companions, at least there's a chance for redemption, and we had no choice. If we can help you rescue your companions... could you take us with you? Our leader said you were hoarding supplies to leave the city," Gao Yang shrugged helplessly, explaining his intentions.
Jiang He exchanged a glance with Song Yao, both hesitating. After all, the other party had ill intentions; turning enemies into friends was not as simple as it sounded.
After pondering for a moment, Jiang He gave his answer: "Sorry, I can't accept that. Because of you, my companions are now in danger, and I can't put ourselves in that situation too. To be honest, I don't trust you. The fact that I haven't killed you both on the spot is already my greatest tolerance. Please leave quickly."
Gao Yang seemed taken aback by Jiang He's outright refusal and stared blankly at Song Yao.
