Chapter 25: The Zombie Returns
After hearing Ming Junwei's words, everyone fell into silence. It wasn't that there were no questions, but rather that there were too many, and they didn't know how to ask.
What is RCA? What happened in the laboratory? Why is the government covering for them? Did the military personnel get killed by RCA Corporation? What is their purpose? What are the reasons behind it?
Among the six adults present, Ming Junwei was barely someone who knew a small part of the inside story. An Zheng was a doctor, while the other four were ordinary citizens who were momentarily stunned by this influx of information. Frankly speaking, as Chao Yifan had said, they weren't particularly interested in these so-called secrets. Although they wanted to know what caused this disaster, their primary concern was how to survive. Thus, they did not delve deeper into Ming Junwei's statements; after all, he was the only one with this knowledge. If what he said was true, then it was as good as saying nothing; if he was hiding something, they wouldn't know how to discern the truth.
"Let's talk about our own matters. What were you discussing just now?" Jiang He opened the window to let in the morning breeze, feeling overwhelmed after listening to so much nonsense.
"Ming the Great Hero means we should contact Garrison's outpost," Chao Yifan said, raising an A4 sheet of paper in his hand.
"Your people killed some of their troops, and you still dare to contact them?" Jiang He teased.
"What does that have to do with me?" Ming Junwei shrugged dismissively. "Getting protection from the military would be best; after all, we know nothing about the outside world."
"Junwei, I have a question for you," An Zheng spoke up.
"I'm all ears."
"What are your plans? I mean, if you really get military protection, what will you do? Contact your company's higher-ups? Or what?"
Ming Junwei looked at An Zheng's beautiful face and remained silent for a moment before slowly replying, "If I can find a safe haven, I will start my life anew. To hell with the company and its higher-ups."
Jiang He glanced at Ming Junwei, noticing his reddened eyes.
Song Yao zipped up his tactical jacket and grabbed an Entrenching Tool and binoculars before heading outside.
"Where are you going?" Jiang He asked.
"Hurry up and decide; I'm going to keep watch," Song Yao replied without turning back as he walked out.
"I'm going too. Dahuai, you decide," Chao Yifan patted Jiang He on the shoulder and followed Song Yao out with a disposable spear in hand.
Jinhua had gathered many cardboard boxes to collect supplies; the shelves were nearly empty of food and drink. Two children sat by the window playing while only Jiang He, An Zheng, and Ming Junwei remained eyeing each other in silence.
Ming Junwei picked up an A4 sheet of paper and pointed to a red dot in the image, saying, "This was found on those soldiers. To be honest, I can't guarantee it's Garrison, because there's no label. It could also mean... a danger zone, like an epidemic area or something severe."
"Then how do we find it?" Jiang He asked.
"Look, there are only two routes on the map, with three marked points in total: two circles and one red dot, right?" Ming Junwei spread the paper on the ground for the two to see.
"Uh-huh, and then?"
"The two circles are far from here; only the red dot is close. Think about the video—the troops arrived quickly and didn't leave behind any military vehicles or anything. So I believe they must have come from the red dot." Ming Junwei pulled out a half-used pencil from his pocket and circled the red dot.
An Zheng tucked a strand of hair behind his ear and remained silent.
"How do you know it's close?" Jiang He asked curiously.
"Reference point—this mountain. Now look outside the window." Ming Junwei pointed to the outline of the mountain on the map and then to the view outside.
Jiang He looked out and indeed saw that it resembled the outline in the image.
"I don't know how the person who drew this set the distances, but if they could get here in ten minutes, I think we can drive there even faster."
"I don't think so. I watched the video this morning; it could have been passing by in a car, right?" An Zheng disagreed with Ming Junwei's assertion.
"Seven armed soldiers driving by?" Ming Junwei raised an eyebrow and teased, "Were they just stopping by to use the restroom?"
"My opinion is still to speed up and head to Beijing. The longer we delay on the road, the more dangerous it becomes. I don't believe there's still Garrison in this area." An Zheng's gaze was intense as he said firmly, "Even if your lab hasn't leaked any viruses, that city is still a source of infection. If there's Garrison so close, why hasn't there been any rescue?"
Jiang He nodded in agreement; it made sense. If ordinary people could escape early on, how could the military not get in?
Ming Junwei furrowed his brow and thought for a moment before saying, "Perhaps there wasn't Garrison at first; maybe it appeared after the Cataclysm broke out."
"Then it's gone now," Jiang He recalled that train ticket and said, "The video was filmed on June 25th. What's today's date? August... August... Sis, what's today's date?"
Time seemed to stand still in the mountains; after pondering for a while about 'August,' Jiang He couldn't remember what day it was today.
An Zheng smiled lightly and glanced at his watch. "The nineteenth."
Jiang He chuckled as he rubbed his nose. "Right, today is the nineteenth. It's been almost two months now. What has Garrison been doing? Hiding in the camp playing cards?"
Ming Junwei licked his lips and said, "You have a point, but I still believe the troops wouldn't just show up here for no reason..."
"Just a quick question, can you drive that coach?" An Zheng asked, looking out at the large coach.
"I can drive it," Ming Junwei replied, puffing out two smoke rings proudly. "Besides trains and planes, there's no vehicle I can't handle."
"We have too many cars; let's switch to the big one," An Zheng said with a smile, looking at Jiang He. "Xiao Song has always wanted a vehicle for everyone, right?"
Jiang He chuckled but suddenly remembered something and frowned.
"What’s wrong?" An Zheng asked, puzzled.
"Speaking of the coach, I remembered something. When the three of us went to look for things in the car last night, we noticed that it was full when it left, but... the bodies in the kitchen..." Jiang He pointed toward the dining area and continued, "There weren't that many."
"I almost forgot about that," Ming Junwei scratched his head and recalled, "That big coach should have a capacity of around fifty people, but there were only twelve bodies in the kitchen. That's quite a discrepancy."
"Two psychopaths," An Zheng spat.
