Chapter Eight: Rainy Night (Three) 0

An Zheng had a habit of wearing a white lab coat over a T-shirt and jeans, though women naturally wore a bit more. 0

The warriors turned their backs, not daring to make a sound, sitting on the other side of the fire in a wall of bare shoulders. This made An Zheng feel somewhat awkward, but given the circumstances, she couldn't afford to care too much. 0

Her soaked clothes hung nearby as An Zheng sat by the fire with her knees hugged to her chest. The feeling of being nearly naked was uncomfortable; even though He Yong and the others had their backs to her, there was still a comatose Communications Soldier lying by the fire. An Zheng's beautiful face was flushed in the glow of the flames, and she silently hoped that the Communications Soldier wouldn’t suddenly wake up. 0

An awkward silence fell in the pit. The warriors focused on their own thoughts while An Zheng remained quiet, with only the crackling of burning branches breaking the stillness. 0

Outside, the wind and rain continued, as if the heavens were angered by the ravaged city and wandering Zombies below, intent on unleashing a deluge to destroy everything. 0

After a long while, a Little Warrior named Er Jin timidly raised his hand and asked softly, “Squad leader, can I speak?” 0

He Yong seemed about to fall asleep but jolted awake. “Hmm? Ah... go ahead, what is it?” 0

“Since we have a fire going, won’t the light attract Zombies?” Er Jin scratched an itch stealthily, his neck stiff as if petrified. 0

“It should be fine. The terrain here is quite high; we’ve exerted ourselves coming this far. I don’t believe Zombies can climb mountains,” He Yong replied confidently, though he seemed uncertain inside as he reached for his gun leaning against the wall. 0

“Don’t be too nervous. Zombies primarily track living beings through smell and sound. Their vision hasn’t completely degenerated but is largely ineffective; their brains don’t reflect signals,” An Zheng said, resting her chin on her knees. The warmth from the fire dried off her damp skin and hair. With fatigue from several days weighing on her, An Zheng felt herself growing drowsy. 0

“Hmm?” He Yong asked curiously, “Dr. An, do you know much about these Zombies?” 0

“Not really; the research institute conducted some studies before,” An Zheng replied while running her fingers through her hair, tilting her head slightly. “But there isn’t much valuable information.” 0

“Dr. An, where do these Zombies come from? Vice Commander said it’s a disease; is that true?” Er Jin was curious and quickly interjected when he saw An Zheng respond. 0

“Well… I can only tell you it’s an infectious virus; as for other details, that’s classified,” An Zheng said, pressing her attractive lips together as she reached for her underwear hanging on the railing. 0

The warriors were disciplined; upon hearing it was classified information, they immediately fell silent after their earlier chatter and resumed focusing on their own thoughts. 0

An Zheng put on her underwear and wrapped herself in the dried white lab coat before saying, “Alright, it’s my turn to turn around now; you all hurry up and dry your pants.” 0

A group of warriors cautiously turned around, each of them too afraid to lift their heads, as if they could bury their faces in the ground. 0

"What’s wrong with you all? I'm wearing clothes," An Zheng said, poking at the campfire with a grin. 0

The Little Warriors exchanged glances, then timidly raised their heads. 0

An Zheng's beautiful curly hair was slightly frizzy after being dried by the fire. Wrapped in a white coat, the flickering flames cast shadows that vaguely revealed the outline of her undergarments. With her long, fair legs crossed and curled up on the ground, she exuded an alluring charm that was both sexy and captivating. The Little Warriors found themselves unable to resist the enchanting allure of this mature woman, swallowing hard as they struggled to decide where to direct their gaze. 0

An Zheng herself possessed a classical beauty, and years of research had added an air of intellect to her demeanor. Her calm and composed manner made others feel at ease, but at that moment, her lazy sensuality was off the charts—something the Little Warriors simply could not withstand. 0

Feeling awkward, the Little Warriors fidgeted while she appeared much more relaxed. With a smile, she chose not to address the tension and busied herself checking on the Communications Soldier's condition. 0

"I wonder how Vice Commander is doing," He Yong said with some concern. 0

"Vice Commander will be fine," Er Jin replied, sniffing slightly, filled with confidence in their leader. 0

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& 0

Was Vice Commander really fine? No, there was a big problem. 0

At the very moment An Zheng and the others lit a bonfire in the cave, the mountains above the camp finally succumbed to the relentless downpour. 0

With a sound akin to thunder, a massive amount of mud and rubble was swept down by the rainwater, instantly engulfing the entire campsite. 0

At that moment of flash flood, Xiao Yun had just knocked on Jiang He's door against the pouring rain. 0

"What’s going on?" Jiang He asked. 0

"Vice Commander said we’re leaving early tomorrow," Xiao Yun replied. 0

"Boom! Boom boom!" 0

a rock!” Jiang He shouted, panic rising in his chest. He could see the blood streaming down Ming Junwei's face, and the sight made his heart race even faster. 0

“Hold on!” Chao Yifan grunted, struggling to keep Ming Junwei above water. The current was relentless, and every second felt like an eternity as they fought against the chaos surrounding them. 0

Jiang He kicked harder, pushing through the water towards them. He could feel the weight of despair pressing down on him, but he refused to give in. “We need to get to shore! Now!” 0

Just then, a loud crash echoed through the air as another wave of debris surged past them. Jiang He barely managed to dodge a large piece of wood that came barreling through the water. 0

“Where are the others?” Chao Yifan yelled over the roar of the water, his voice strained with effort. 0

“I don’t know!” Jiang He replied, glancing around frantically. The once familiar campsite was now a swirling mass of destruction. “We have to find them!” 0

With a surge of determination, Jiang He pushed himself forward, scanning the tumultuous waters for any sign of Song Yao, Xiao Yun, or Pan Luo. Each moment felt like a lifetime as he fought against the current, his muscles burning with exertion. 0

Suddenly, he spotted a flash of color—a red shirt bobbing in the distance. “There!” he shouted, pointing towards it. “I see someone!” 0

Without waiting for a response, he propelled himself towards the figure, praying it was one of his friends. As he got closer, he realized it was indeed Song Yao. She was struggling to stay afloat, her eyes wide with fear. 0

“Grab my hand!” Jiang He called out, extending his arm towards her. 0

With a desperate lunge, she reached for him just as another wave crashed down nearby. Their fingers brushed against each other, and he felt a surge of hope. 0

“Hold on tight!” he urged as he pulled her closer. Together they fought against the raging waters, trying to make their way back to safety. 0

As they swam, Jiang He couldn’t shake off the feeling of dread that hung over them. The river had transformed into a monster overnight, and they were just tiny specks in its fury. But he knew they had to keep fighting—there was no other choice. 0
