Chapter Twenty-Two: Clothing
"Don't hide, I can see you."
The owner of the footsteps spoke; it was a man.
No one responded, and as Jiang He opened his mouth, Song Yao quickly covered it.
The group was scattered, and suddenly, with everyone hidden, no one could see anyone else or discuss anything.
After waiting for a moment without any response, the man at the door asked again, "Put down your weapons and raise your hands on your head."
The man's voice wasn't loud, but everyone heard him clearly. He sounded like a middle-aged man with a regional accent.
Jiang He gently pushed Song Yao's hand away and looked around; there were no figures standing up.
His eyes gradually adjusted to the darkness, but the narrow passageway was flanked by high walls, making it impossible to see any silhouettes.
Suddenly, there was a faint sound above. As everyone in the darkness looked up simultaneously, the narrow passage was abruptly illuminated by a beam of flashlight!
The light flashed over, perfectly illuminating the side of Jiang He. He instinctively shoved Song Yao aside and without thinking, threw the sharp knife he held towards the source of the light!
At that moment when Jiang He moved, Ming Junwei also pressed the switch for the spotlight, and the strong incandescent light instantly brightened the garage. Bai Yudong beside him waved and threw out a Wooden Spear!
With a clang, Jiang He's flying knife struck the wall and bounced aside, while Bai Yudong's Wooden Spear shot through the darkness and firmly pinned down the figure that had turned around!
Almost simultaneously, a shadow fell at the entrance. Just as it lifted its foot to step into the garage, a wooden stick swooshed through the air and knocked the newcomer to the ground. Then another figure leaped out of the doorway and engaged in a struggle with the fallen person!
Everything happened in the blink of an eye! It was so fast that there was hardly any time to react!
By the time Song Yao and Pan Luo realized what was happening, Bai Yudong and Jiang He had already subdued the man in the narrow passage, and the situation at the entrance was resolved.
The two women were momentarily stunned, their gazes following the beam of light from Ming Junwei's flashlight as it moved back and forth, their minds feeling a bit lightheaded.
Chao Yifan spat on the ground, grabbing the man's pant leg and dragging him into the shed.
The man who had spoken was pierced in the shoulder by Bai Yudong's thrown spear. Before he could react, he was pinned to the concrete floor by the two who rushed at him.
With a wooden spear lodged in his shoulder, the man was forced by Bai Yudong to push his hands down against the corner of the shed, while Chao Yifan shoved the other person over as well.
"What are you doing?" the injured man asked hoarsely.
Pan Luo stared wide-eyed, swallowing hard in disbelief. She never expected that the cold and eerie atmosphere just moments ago would be shattered so suddenly.
Song Yao wasn't much better off; despite usually being smart and brave, her mind was struggling to keep up with the rapid turn of events.
Chao Yifan got hit with a punch when he lunged forward, splitting his lip. He touched it with his hand and felt blood.
"What are you doing?" This question was echoed back to them by Bai Yudong verbatim.
Jiang He secretly let out a sigh of relief. In a moment of panic, he had acted rashly, but thankfully Bai Yudong had stepped in just in time to prevent things from going awry. Now that the adrenaline was fading, Jiang He couldn't help but feel a bit scared; they were lucky that the man had a flashlight instead of a gun.
Ming Junwei turned off the spotlight and picked up the fallen flashlight, turning it on again. The dim yellow light illuminated the faces of both men.
Both were male; the one standing at the narrow passage looked to be around forty years old. He was clutching his shoulder and gasping for breath, wincing in pain. His face was broad and lined with deep wrinkles, his eyes squinting painfully. He had a stocky build with a Mediterranean hairstyle, and a wooden spear thrown by Bai Yudong was embedded deep into his right shoulder.
Another person squatted nearby, covering his nose. He had a round head and dark skin, looking robust with a pair of vigilant eyes fixed on the group in front of him, remaining silent.
Both of them wore clothes that were indistinguishable in color and stood in large leather shoes.
Jiang He and the others were somewhat surprised; this man's physique seemed comparable to Bai Yudong's, yet he had been taken down by Chao Yifan...
"Was it you who fired the gun earlier?" Bai Yudong asked again.
The Round-Headed Man remained silent, tilting his head to one side.
Song Yao tugged at Jiang He's sleeve, pulling him aside and asking, "Why did you guys just jump into action like that?"
"What else could we do? They made us surrender our weapons; what were we supposed to do, just stand there?" Jiang He felt it was only natural. Damn it, they weren't the police; why should they drop their weapons and raise their hands?
Song Yao gave a thumbs up, praising, "You guys are really quick on the draw!"
Jiang He's face flushed slightly as he replied, "Those two were quick; I was just good at dodging... You and Pan Luo keep an eye on that doorway."
Song Yao acknowledged and called Pan Luo to grab a Wooden Spear and guard the doorway.
The interrogation by Bai Yudong and the others was not going smoothly. After several questions, neither of the two on the ground responded. One grimaced in pain while the other pretended to be mute; both remained silent, their eyes darting around at the group.
The three were momentarily at a loss. The sudden attack had not been part of their plan, and they hadn’t expected to end up with two captives so quickly.
Jiang He switched on his flashlight and peered into the narrow passage but found nothing.
"Damn it, are they mute?" Chao Yifan spat out some blood foam and kicked over the Round-Headed Man. Grabbing the Wooden Spear, he pointed its sharpened end at him and shouted angrily, "Still not talking? Then don’t bother!" With that, he suddenly thrust it forward!
Ming Junwei and Bai Yudong were both taken aback, quickly stepping in to stop the furious Chao Yifan, one gripping his spear while the other held him by the waist.
Jiang He, returning from his patrol, was surprised by the scene and hurried over to keep an eye on the two restless individuals.
"Hey! What are you pulling me for?" Chao Yifan broke free from their grasp, visibly annoyed. "What do you mean by this?"
Bai Yudong was momentarily stunned, not quite understanding what he meant.
Chao Yifan wiped his bald head, his emotions a bit unstable. He paced back and forth a couple of times before pointing at the two on the ground. "What are we even doing here? Huh? These two Sneaky guys just popped up out of nowhere, and you didn’t even ask what they wanted before dragging me into this? It’s almost dawn! How long are you going to drag this out?"
Chao Yifan's barrage of questions left the three speechless. On one hand, they didn’t understand why Chao Yifan was suddenly so agitated; on the other hand, they had to admit that he was stating facts.
Jiang He approached with a puzzled expression, while Chao Yifan tossed aside his Wooden Spear and slumped against the wall.
"What’s going on?" Jiang He asked, patting him on the shoulder, confused.
"Ask those two first; I’m fine," Chao Yifan shrugged off Jiang He's hand and stood up, walking toward the doorway.
Jiang He was left bewildered as he turned to look at the two individuals. Ming Junwei also shrugged in confusion.
Bai Yudong squatted in front of Mediterranean and said, "I am Vice Commander Bai Yudong of Field Company 182. Who are you? Why are you here at the power station?"
