Chapter Thirty: Rescue
Song Yao's plan was not progressing smoothly. Not all the iron railings were loose; after half a day's effort, they had only managed to remove two rows of the railings. These iron barriers, shaped like the letter "目," had endured countless storms and were covered in rust. Bai Yudong tried to lift one; it wasn't too heavy and could potentially cause some damage.
The railings were about two meters long, standing waist-high when upright. According to Song Yao's idea, these large iron bars, if dropped from a height, should be able to inflict considerable harm. As long as they could crush or clear out the Zombies surrounding the ladder, they would create a safe landing area. Then they could jump down from a slightly elevated position and make a quick escape.
It was risky, but it seemed like the only option. At this moment, apart from a few sharp knives, they had nothing else. Although these railings wouldn't be of much use on their own, throwing them from above could at least create a mess of flesh below. As long as the landing area wasn't filled with Zombies, they could jump out along the protruding concrete platform at the base.
The Zombies in the Living Area had already reached the intersection, and it seemed that the Russian Brothers had noticed the commotion; they stopped and began to retreat.
Without hesitation, they decided that Pan Luo and the little boy would stay at the top of the tower for now. Regardless of whether they could physically endure it, the danger level for the upcoming desperate breakout was extremely high; it was safer for them to remain up there. Ming Junwei was the first to go down; he needed to jump down at the moment when he pushed back against the Zombies and then quickly run to restart the truck on the road in front of the Plant Area.
The iron railing wasn’t very heavy when standing on the ground, but carrying it while climbing down the ladder was quite challenging. Bai Yudong slipped his arm through one of the railings and followed Ming Junwei down the ladder, leaving another for Jiang He and Chao Yifan. Ming Junwei had an injury on his shoulder; climbing down was already pushing his limits, and he couldn't carry an additional railing.
After some consideration, the two of them descended one after another, mimicking Bai Yudong's method—one person slipped an arm through while holding it above and carrying it below. They could share the weight, but their steps had to remain synchronized. Song Yao left a sharp knife for Pan Luo, took a deep breath to bolster his courage, and was the last to climb down.
It is often said that climbing up is easy while descending is hard; this seemed true for climbing stairs as well. When going up, there wasn’t much thought involved—if tired, one could take a break—but now everyone was pressed for time and could only try to speed up.
Below them, Zombies had turned the bodies of the Mediterranean four into piles of flesh. Some wandered into gaps between the high walls and water tower while those outside remained blocked from entering. The Color Steel House beneath the ladder had been flattened, with about two or three meters separating them from the ground.
Not long ago, they had jumped from a building; now they felt no fear about a height of two or three meters—only concern about accidentally falling into a pile of Zombies.
Pan Luo peered over the railing with a pitiful expression as he watched the others on the ladder move farther away. He swallowed hard and leaned back inside, tightly hugging the little boy.
A few minutes later, Ming Junwei and Bai Yudong reached the end of the ladder one after the other. Below them, Zombies roared and reached out with their arms, their deep-set eye sockets and decaying bodies emitting a foul stench.
Ming Junwei gripped the handrails on either side of the ladder, carefully turning around to face the Zombies as he meticulously chose his landing spot.
The diameter of the cylindrical wall connected to the base was over fifty meters, with a curved outer edge that fanned out like a sector. The Zombies gathered at the base of the tower in a fan shape, stretching the entire Horde horizontally and revealing an open space behind them.
However, Ming Junwei lacked confidence that he could leap directly over the wall of Zombies. Moreover, if one of them made a sudden turn while he was still in mid-air, he would truly find himself with no way out.
Bai Yudong stood above Ming Junwei, gauging the distance before pointing to a Zombie on Ming Junwei's right. "This way! Smash down and jump out immediately!"
Ming Junwei quickly took a few deep breaths to steady himself, then made a forward leap motion, shouting, "Throw it!"
At Bai Yudong's command, he raised his hand and tossed the railing down.
The iron railing fell directly into the pile of Zombies below and landed on top of them...
In that instant when the railing dropped, Ming Junwei had already leaped out. To his shock, he saw that the crowded Zombies had pushed the railing up instead. In that moment, all that filled his mind were the words 'My life is over.'
The few people on the ladder stared in disbelief as they watched Ming Junwei crash into the pile of Zombies, which then collapsed under him.
"What the hell?" Jiang He exclaimed, his eyes wide with shock.
After hitting the ground, Ming Junwei rolled over dramatically and narrowly escaped from the wall of corpses. He quickly got back on his feet and ran away just before the Zombies swarmed him, shouting back, "Bai! This isn't over!!"
Bai Yudong was momentarily stunned, but soon noticed a group of Zombies chasing after Ming Junwei, leaving a clear path beneath the tower.
Before Jiang He and the others could react, Bai Yudong leaped down, sprinting along the newly opened route. He surprisingly outpaced the Zombies pursuing Ming Junwei and ran alongside him.
"What the hell..." Jiang He was completely dumbfounded. Seeing the two of them getting farther away, he hurriedly urged Chao Yifan, "We should go too! Hurry!"
However, Chao Yifan didn't seem anxious. Instead, he crawled down a few more steps and said, "Let go."
"Huh?"
"Let go of the railing, don't throw it." Chao Yifan shouted.
The Zombies on one side of the high wall did not chase after them but instead closed in again.
Without hesitation, Jiang He pulled his arm back from between the railings. The iron railing sliced through the air in a sweeping arc, accompanied by a whooshing sound as it swung down.
Chao Yifan didn't let go; using the momentum from the swinging railing, he knocked over a group of Zombies.
Seeing that it worked, Jiang He and Song Yao quickly followed suit, preparing to jump down.
Chao Yifan stopped them both and mimicked Ming Junwei's actions. He turned around, grasped the guardrail with both hands, and with a powerful push from his legs, he dove headfirst downwards.
