Chapter Thirty-Eight: Escape 0

He Yong interrupted his thoughts, carefully observing above while lowering his voice to ask, "Where are Xiaomi and Xiao Wei?" 0

"They're in the house across the street. The group downstairs came in, but I don't know why they haven't come up yet." Zhuzi listened intently; there was still no movement outside the door. 0

He Yong spat and cursed, "These bastards are trying to catch us... Quickly send them a message. While those idiots haven't come up yet, we need to get out." 0

"What about Shitou? I haven't seen him," Zhuzi asked. 0

"He's on the fourth floor keeping watch. You all need to move fast. Damn it, if we get caught by these scumbags, we'll have to avenge Er Jin and the others!" He Yong panted heavily, feeling a surge of anger at the thought of his fallen comrades. 0

"Bang!" 0

Just as they were speaking, another muffled sound of a sniper rifle echoed from outside. 0

Little Russian cried out in pain and collapsed to the ground, his right arm torn apart by the powerful penetration of a 7.62mm round. 0

Bai Yudong and Big Mousy dove behind the Green Belt, but Little Russian was a moment too late. 0

Seeing his brother writhing in agony on the ground, Big Mousy’s eyes turned red as he prepared to rush out to save him. Bai Yudong grabbed Big Mousy’s leg and forcibly held him down. 0

Another bullet was fired, barely grazing Big Mousy’s scalp before embedding itself into the concrete wall, leaving a crater behind. 0

Bai Yudong cursed himself for being careless; he had clearly heard that they had a sniper rifle earlier—how could he have forgotten about it?! 0

But it wasn’t entirely Bai Yudong’s fault. The three of them had been trailing behind the Horde of Zombies and had watched a group of people hiding behind the Green Belt enter the dormitory building. They never expected those people would stay on the first floor instead of going upstairs. 0

Wu Wentao irritably moved away from the optical sight and clicked his tongue. "I missed!" 0

Caroline snorted coldly and raised her binoculars to take a look. "I can't see the other two." 0

"Yeah, they're hiding behind the Green Belt. The fat guy is wearing military gear; the other two seem like workers?" Wu Wentao aimed his gun for a long time, only seeing that unfortunate guy with a broken arm still struggling on the ground while the other two remained hidden. 0

"Are we being set up?" Caroline's blue eyes glinted with a chilling intensity. "Why are there still people outside?" 0

"Don't worry; we have people outside too." Wu Wentao aimed again, noticing that the other two showed no signs of revealing themselves. He slightly raised his gun and pulled the trigger again at the writhing figure on the ground. 0

"Bang!" 0

Little Russian gritted his teeth, suppressing a scream as veins bulged on his forehead, his face turning pale. 0

Another bullet shot out from behind the iron door, striking hard into Little Russian's left leg. 0

He gave up struggling and collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath. He tried to move his leg, but the excruciating pain made it impossible for him to tell if it was still there. He dared not look back and gritted his teeth to shout two words: "Go now!" 0

There was no need for Wu Wentao to fire again; the surrounding Zombies had caught the scent of blood. Some of the Zombies that had fallen outside the Horde of Zombies turned around and began to approach Little Russian. 0

Big Mao lay behind the Green Belt, his gaze locking with Little Russian's through the gaps in the branches. Tears streamed down his face, and he had bitten his lower lip until it bled. 0

Bai Yudong pressed down on Big Mousy, burying his head to one side, unable to bear looking. 0

"Go..." A twisted smile forced its way onto Little Russian's face due to the intense pain. He propped himself up with his uninjured arm and desperately reached for the crowbar that had fallen nearby. 0

Bai Yudong trembled as he turned Big Mousy’s shoulder around: "Go!" 0

"What about Little Mao?" Big Mousy shouted in anger. 0

Bai Yudong's face turned pale as he remained silent, quietly dragging the crowbar from behind the Green Belt and crawling forward. Big Mousy gritted his teeth, glanced back at Little Mao who was unsteadily getting up, let out a suppressed growl, and crawled out after Bai Yudong. 0

Little Russian's left leg was barely attached by a strip of flesh, and his right arm was broken, making it impossible for him to maintain balance. His face contorted in agony as he struggled to stabilize himself on one foot. He swung the crowbar and smashed the skull of an approaching Zombie, but then lost his balance and fell to the ground. The nearby Zombies surged forward, instantly overwhelming Little Russian's body. 0

At the end of the Green Belt was an intersection lined with two rows of cypress trees. Bai Yudong and Big Mousy crawled as fast as they could to the end and slipped into a small grove. 0

Gunfire did not sound; the area by the iron door was packed with Zombies, and Wu Wentao could not see what was happening there. 0

"They seem to have run away," Caroline said as she lowered her binoculars. 0

Wu Wentao waved dismissively: "They can't escape. Get ready; we need to move up." 0

Hearing that they were going into action, a hint of a smile finally appeared on Caroline's cold face: "If we wait any longer, I might want to put on a face mask." 0

Wu Wentao glanced at his watch and said, "Three people per group; search layer by layer." With that, he rushed up to the second floor, sweeping left and right before rolling into the corridor on the right. 0

The others followed orders and streamed up behind him. Caroline ran up alongside a Black man. Wu Wentao stood in the corridor and shouted: "Those inside raise your guns above your heads!" 0

After a while, the second wooden door opened, and the burly man who had hidden inside emerged, holding a rifle. 0

Wu Wentao shook his head, signaling him to check ahead. The man nodded and moved forward against the wall, taking two steps before pulling the trigger at the wooden door. After a series of shots, he kicked the door open. 0

Behind the door was a square table, and there was no one inside the room. 0

Wu Wentao looked surprised as he glanced at the blinking red dot on the tracker—it was still moving at the original coordinates. 0

He instructed the man to check everything on the right side while he carried his rifle toward the left. Bullets poured out continuously as he forcefully kicked open door after door, finding them all empty. 0

Footsteps echoed in the hallway as Caroline rushed down with her team. 0

"You idiot! Why didn't you act immediately just now?" Caroline scolded angrily. 0

Wu Wentao shot her a sidelong glance, his tone unfriendly. "What did you say?" 0

"I said you're an idiot!" Caroline retorted without hesitation. "There was only one team member's corpse upstairs! Zhou is also missing!" 0

"You crazy woman, that bastard was under your watch—forgotten already?" Wu Wentao's brows furrowed suddenly, clearly not expecting this situation. Ignoring Caroline's furious state, he casually walked into a room and looked at the concrete wall next to the back window, letting out a soft 'huh'. 0
