Chapter 42: Cat and Mouse (Part 1) 0

The assault by Wu Wentao and his team was not going smoothly. Due to the limitations of the straight terrain, they were unable to provide effective fire coverage. In an instant, as gunfire erupted, the surrounding Zombies turned in their direction and charged toward the sound. Although they had plenty of ammunition, they could not maintain a high rate of fire. As the mass of Zombies moved in unison, even the best marksmanship could not guarantee that every bullet would hit a head. Thus, one team had to shoot while retreating, attempting to create distance and use concentrated fire to wipe out this batch of Zombies. 0

Caroline knew this was a foolish tactic, but due to her partner's previous reckless actions, she worried that taking too long would lead to mistakes. In fact, Jiang He and the others had indeed moved ahead. 0

The twelve-person team spread out into a pyramid formation, maintaining a steady retreat while suppressing fire in waves. When those at the front needed to reload, those at the back quickly took their places. Although the Zombies were getting closer, the number of fallen Zombies was also rapidly increasing; it was a predictable slaughter. However, it was clear that someone did not want them to succeed. 0

At the apex of the formation, a burly white man finished a magazine and prepared to retreat for a reload when a bullet silently shot out, accurately shattering his skull. Red and white brain matter splattered everywhere, further agitating the Zombies. 0

Wu Wentao's expression changed as he quickly spotted a shooter above them in the warehouse's ventilation duct. He waved his hand for his teammates to spread out. Caroline raised her weapon and fired two shots at the edge of the vent, sparks flying everywhere. He Yong quickly ducked inside, grinning as he signaled to the three behind him with his fingers: "One!" 0

Bang! Bang! Bang! 0

Several bullets flew into the vent, drilling holes into the ceiling. He Yong broke out in a cold sweat and hurriedly crouched on the pipe, waving at Bai Yudong. 0

Old Bai understood immediately and helped Big Mao support Communications Soldier as they jogged into the box compartment. 0

Wu Wentao briefly forced back the cold shooter in the vent, but due to insufficient firepower, they were being pushed further away by the Zombies, who were now just beyond their effective range. 0

"Damn it!" Wu Wentao cursed under his breath as he rushed back a few meters and set up his sniper rifle to aim at the vent. "Give me two minutes!" 0

Caroline and the others received the order, suppressing their steps and no longer retreating as flames erupted from their weapons, shell casings scattering across the ground. 0

Amidst the encroaching horde of zombies, flesh and blood were scattered everywhere, bodies torn apart by rapid gunfire, with red and green splatters painting the cold concrete ground like a chaotic ink wash landscape. 0

Caroline's Beretta had run dry, but she now wielded an HK416, unleashing brilliant flashes of light. Despite everyone pouring their ammunition into the relentless assault, the fearless zombies continued to surge forward, stepping over the corpses of their fallen comrades. 0

"Quick!" Caroline swung the butt of her rifle to knock down a zombie that had broken through their firing line. With her long legs raised high, she delivered a crushing kick, her sturdy hiking boot smashing the zombie's skull like a shattered watermelon. 0

Wu Wentao suppressed his anger; it wasn't that he didn't want to shoot, but the vent was completely empty—there wasn't even a feather to be found. What could he do? 0

He Yong was no fool; he still felt uneasy about the enemy's high-precision sniper rifle. The only reason he had dared to peek out earlier was that he had assessed they were focused on clearing a path with concentrated fire. Having just taken out one of their shooters, he figured the vent was now in the sniper's crosshairs. Exposing himself now would be tantamount to suicide. 0

He Yong chuckled nervously as he crouched down and moved closer to the bullet hole in the iron door. 0

The area in front of the door was littered with dismembered zombie limbs. The enemy's firepower remained undiminished as they continued to eliminate the remaining zombies. Although they were two hundred meters away, at this rate, it would take no more than three minutes for them to clear out the zombies completely. Once that happened, this group would charge in without any obstacles left. 0

After some consideration, He Yong realized that the old iron door was rusted and likely wouldn't hold against a single burst of gunfire. Unlike zombies, these enemies could easily turn the door into a sieve with just one volley. With only limited ammunition among the four of them, suppressing the enemy's fire was nothing but a pipe dream. Understanding this, He Yong hurried back to the cardboard box partition and began to scatter the neatly stacked boxes into disarray, creating a messy blockade in the narrow path between them. 0

As He Yong pushed aside a row of boxes to retreat deeper into the passage, he noticed that the woman bound by chains at his feet stirred slightly, as if trying to stand up, causing the chains to rattle ominously. He Yong froze for a moment, standing behind the disordered boxes and staring blankly at her. 0

The woman who had died earlier was covered with work uniforms found by Song Yao and others. The remaining two had remained silent and lifeless; An Zheng had declared that there was no hope for immediate treatment, prompting everyone to consider abandoning them. But now, the younger woman in between surprisingly propped herself up against the color steel wall, her messy hair obscuring her face as she seemed to search for something in confusion. 0

He Yong hesitated; outside, gunfire was gradually fading away—presumably indicating that most of the zombies had been eliminated. Although he could easily shoot through the chains binding her, how could he manage with such a disoriented woman keeping pace with their group? Cursing under his breath about how Jiang He and others had tried to communicate with them before leaving without any response, he found it ironic that she suddenly seemed to come back to life now. 0

Hearing Big Mao calling him from behind, He Yong pondered for a moment before formulating an idea. He shouted towards the woman. He Yong decided that if she could understand his call, they would take her along; if not, they would have to leave her behind! 0

"Hey! Over here!" He Yong shouted, straining his voice. 0

The woman jolted, abruptly turning her head to focus on the dazed He Yong. 0

"Damn..." He Yong swallowed hard, unsure whether to laugh or cry. 0

"What are you doing?" Big Mousy called out to him a few times. When he didn't respond, she hurried over. "What's going on? The Vice Commander and the others are all in position!" 0

"This woman is awake!" He Yong said, smacking his lips as he crossed over a cardboard box to approach her. "Can you understand what I'm saying?" 0

The woman timidly took two steps back, crossing her arms over her chest and nodding slightly. 0
