Chapter 43: Cat and Mouse (Part Two)
At the entrance of the equipment storage, Big Mao found himself in a dilemma. The sudden noise had almost disrupted their rhythm. The area was large, but there were too many pieces of equipment. Jiang He mentioned two people who seemed to be hiding in some corner. Bai Yudong and the Communications Soldier took up positions on elevated spots; he was responsible for covering He Yong's retreat. However, a loud bang suddenly erupted from the center, shattering their ambush plan and prompting a barrage of fire from the opposing side, turning the cardboard maze into a junkyard.
Big Mao was unsure if He Yong had been hit. Seeing two foreigners firing at the boxes below, he grew anxious and fired two shots that took down one of the probing foreigners, inadvertently revealing their position and drawing retaliatory fire.
Retreating behind a cylinder next to the equipment storage door, Big Mao tore off a piece of his sleeve to bandage the wound on his thigh. He had been caught off guard by a bullet that grazed him. Fortunately, it hadn’t penetrated but left a nasty gash that caused his flesh to roll back.
Bai Yudong climbed atop an abandoned boiler, angled towards a corridor in the corner. Little Russian was hiding behind a row of cylinders, perfectly within his line of sight. The woman that Big Mao had carried back was huddled behind a generator, trembling in her clothes. The Communications Soldier, unable to move quickly, lay flat between two furnace openings facing the corridor.
Hidden behind cover, Wu Wentao exchanged glances with a man and silently crept along the wall beside the iron door to the entrance of the equipment storage, holding his breath to listen for any movement inside. Caroline and her group also aimed at the entrance.
He Yong was unaware of what was happening behind him; the enemy team had split into two groups, causing him to lose his ambush advantage. He could only remain in place and wait for their next move.
At this moment, Wu Wentao regretted not bringing along two grenades when leaving the camp. Caroline had mocked him about whether he wanted to drive a tank in. In a fit of impulsiveness, he had discarded two pineapple grenades, only to find himself stuck in a stalemate now.
He had previously assessed the enemy's firepower and knew their ammunition and equipment were not on par with his own team’s. However, after two encounters with zombies and losing four team members in the dormitory building, their numbers were now roughly equal to those of the enemy. If the enemy hadn’t retreated but instead planned to hold their ground, he felt uncertain about maintaining an overwhelming advantage. After all, they seemed quite familiar with the terrain here; without the threat of zombies, they were no longer in a hurry.
The atmosphere became awkward; Old Bai's group lost their ambush advantage while Wu Wentao's team couldn’t leverage their firepower either. The only entrance to the equipment storage was small; rushing in recklessly would inevitably lead to casualties.
Several team members fired at the Color Steel Wall, creating holes in it. A man with a goatee picked up Wu Wentao’s sniper rifle and attached an optical sight, peering through one of the bullet holes. Unfortunately, his view was too limited; all he could see was part of a glowing furnace.
Caroline glanced at her watch as time ticked away. She sensed that the enemy was stalling for time and decided to take action by charging out with her gun drawn. Wu Wentao signaled her not to act impulsively from his position by the corridor. In response, Caroline kicked a cardboard box into the passageway; it was shredded by bullets mid-air as she rolled into it and quickly fired two shots at predicted positions before she even regained her footing.
The extraordinary awareness of the Foreign Girl was undeniable; she accurately judged the positions of Big Mao and the Communications Soldier, and two bullets whizzed past their ears.
Both of them were infuriated, and outside, Wu Wentao and his group rushed in. Fortunately, Bai Yudong provided timely cover fire, scattering the four individuals entering the equipment compartment. However, his own position was exposed, and he was forced to keep his head down under the retaliatory gunfire.
Caroline leaned against a row of pipes and raised three fingers at Wu Wentao across from her.
Wu Wentao sneered, slowly extending his gun towards the top of the boiler and firing to suppress Bai Yudong's firepower.
The Communications Soldier stood up against the furnace and shot at the gunman suppressing the Vice Commander. With his objective achieved, Wu Wentao waved his hand while dodging, and Caroline stepped out half her body with one hand gripping her gun. The muzzle flash from her Beretta lit up as she shot the Communications Soldier, who fell to the ground, his HK416 firing a diagonal burst of bullets.
Almost simultaneously, Big Mao thrust his gun forward and pulled the trigger towards Caroline. After landing a hit, Caroline quickly withdrew. Meanwhile, Wu Wentao's crossfire covered a man who rolled into an open space. The Uzi fired in rapid succession, sending sparks flying from the cylinder in front of Big Mao.
The exchange of bullets continued back and forth. The six outside quickly rushed in under Caroline's command, splitting into two groups to lay down suppressive fire on both the cylinder and boiler positions, allowing Wu Wentao and another man to take cover in the passageway.
Seeing that the moment had come, He Yong flipped over to push aside a Box Stack and squeezed into the passage with several others before pulling the trigger on a deadly shot.
A torrent of flames erupted as He Yong's furious bullets collided crisply with their targets, knocking down two men responsible for suppressing fire. Caroline was taken aback by this sudden turn; she rolled out from behind her wounded teammate and fired two shots. Blood erupted from He Yong's abdomen as he lost grip on his gun, sending a wave of bullets flying erratically.
Bai Yudong had a clear view from above; noticing that those suppressing fire were suddenly ambushed, he rolled off the boiler to unload some force and landed beside the cylinder. He aimed and fired at Sneaky, who was sneaking towards the boiler, turning him into a beehive of holes. Wu Wentao hesitated for a moment, which allowed Big Mao to exploit the opening; flashes of fire suppressed four men by the pipes. After several rolls to evade incoming bullets, he took cover behind a turbine.
Across from him sat a trembling woman behind a Generator. When she saw Big Mao leaning against the machine opposite her, she swayed as if trying to stand up. Big Mao’s expression changed abruptly; he waved his hand frantically to signal her not to move. To his surprise, when she saw him wave, a smile broke out on her face as she stood up and walked toward him.
Big Mao's scalp tingled with alarm; instinctively he lunged forward to tackle her to the ground just as Wu Wentao’s group raised their guns and unleashed a volley that pierced through Big Mao's body mid-air.
The woman pinned beneath Big Mao let out a piercing scream, terrified as she pushed him away, blood streaming from her mouth and nose, and ran towards Wu Wentao and the others.
Wu Wentao and his companions were clearly startled as they watched the naked woman rush toward them in a frenzy, momentarily forgetting to shoot.
Caroline stepped in, raising her gun and shooting the woman squarely in the forehead. The woman collapsed to the ground, convulsing a couple of times before lying still.
Big Mao's eyes were fixed on the submachine gun that had fallen nearby, struggling to reach for it. A bullet had pierced his lung, and air was rapidly escaping. He gasped for breath like a bellows, the Uzi gleaming just out of reach, feeling as distant as the horizon.
Wu Wentao and his group approached the boiler cautiously, guns aimed. Caroline swayed her hips as she walked up to Big Mao, looking down at the young man desperately trying to grab the gun, and aimed her Beretta at his head.
"Hey!"
Big Mao managed to turn his neck slightly, locking eyes with the foreign woman towering over him. The gun in her hand was pointed directly at him, and a bright flash erupted from the dark muzzle.
Bai Yudong, hidden inside the cylinder, felt an overwhelming sense of despair. He closed his eyes tightly and slowly exhaled a breath of frustration, preparing to raise his own weapon.
A soft sound came from behind him. Bai Yudong turned to see the Fat Kid staring at him in terror.
