Chapter Fifty-Three: The Deal
"Whoever you are, put down the gun and come out with your hands up."
After a long pause, a man spoke from the car door, his Chinese accent awkward and comical.
Bai Yudong slowly drew his twin pistols, his eyes narrowing behind the lenses, his breathing becoming barely audible.
The person at the car door was patient. As Bai Yudong remained silent, he did not speak again, and the shadow on the ground remained still.
Old Bai glanced at his watch; the second hand would complete another circle just as it was time for the other side to switch shifts. They were aware of this, so there was no urgency.
"Have you made up your mind?" The shadow at the car door shifted slightly, and a noise could be faintly heard from within the coach.
A flash of brilliance flickered in Bai Yudong's eyes. Suddenly, he turned around, raising his right hand and firing several shots at the car window. The glass shattered with a crash, and at that moment, the shadow at the car door lunged forward!
It was a large, muscular black man whose speed matched his size, moving like an agile black bear. At the moment Bai Yudong fired his gun, he accurately seized Bai Yudong's left arm and twisted it in the opposite direction. The pistol in Bai Yudong's left hand flew away as pain shot through his arm, causing him to stumble and fall to the ground in a tangle with the man.
"Kenny!"
The two rolled on the ground for two turns, with the black man pinning Bai Yudong down and shouting towards the coach. Sounds of commotion came from behind the van, accompanied by whistles.
Bai Yudong pushed against the black man with all his might, freeing his left hand to pull out a tactical knife from beside his leg. With a furious shout, he plunged it down! The black man was caught off guard as the blade pierced through his tailored suit jacket, embedding itself halfway into his shoulder.
Footsteps approached from both sides of Coach. Bai Yudong pulled out the long knife and lay back down while firing two shots towards the right side of the car to block incoming threats. He then kicked up hard into the black man's chin; with a muffled groan, the man fell limp and stopped moving.
Bang! Bang!
Bai Yudong emptied his pistol and grabbed the HK416 slung across his back, sweeping it around to unleash a barrage of bullets. Several people rushing from the direction of the car door dove for cover behind nearby vehicles before returning fire. A shadow flashed behind him; Bai Yudong threw out his tactical knife again, which sliced through the night air and accurately struck one of the attackers in the chest.
The gunmen by the car door dared not act recklessly; with the business vehicle's headlights still on, every move they made would betray their position.
Jinx, with a long knife embedded in his chest, twisted on the ground for a moment. His companion leaned against the back of the vehicle, hearing several more sounds of shattering glass. He raised his gun and leaned out halfway, firing wildly.
The area in front of the vehicle was empty except for the unconscious Black man lying on the ground. Where had the intruders gone?
The three gunners at the car door arrived late, looking at their companion's puzzled expression before turning their gazes toward Coach.
The lights that had been off for a while flickered back on, revealing Kenny, whose hair was meticulously styled. With an indifferent expression, he walked to the window and waved his hand at his subordinates. "Stay alert."
"Kenny, there's an intruder—" The loyal gunner halted mid-sentence as he saw a figure emerge behind his boss, a rifle pressed against Kenny's lower back.
Kenny glanced at the Black man lying on the ground and frowned slightly. "Is he dead?"
The gunner rushed over to check his injuries and replied, "He's fine; just passed out."
"Alright, take him for bandaging. There's no need to worry about this place," Kenny said lightly before turning back toward the cabin.
The gunners exchanged glances, filled with confusion but ultimately obeyed their boss's orders.
"Can you stop pointing your gun at me?" Kenny put on his gold-rimmed glasses and looked disdainfully at the weapon in Bai Yudong's hands.
Bai Yudong didn’t respond; he lowered his gun slightly but didn’t disengage the safety.
Kenny snorted coldly, pulled out a chair from the table, and sat down without even glancing at Bai Yudong across from him. He opened a cigar box and took one out.
"Who are you?" Kenny shot him a glance and pointed at his clothes with a hint of amusement. "Looks like my people messed up?"
"Yes," Bai Yudong replied as he plopped down onto the bed, laying his rifle across his lap while still aiming it at the person behind the table.
"Are you military?" Kenny asked casually, showing no sign of being a hostage as he clipped the end of his cigar and placed it in his mouth.
"Are you with RCA?" Bai Yudong did not answer him, instead throwing out a question of his own.
Kenny smiled modestly. "It seems you know quite a bit."
"Not really."
"Then..." Kenny stood up and pulled the curtain hanging behind the car window shut, then walked to the table and asked, "Are you here to see me?"
Old Bai squinted at him and nodded. "Sort of."
After saying this, silence fell in the compartment. The two sat quietly across from each other, sizing each other up, neither willing to speak.
Outside the compartment, there was a rustling sound, as if the gunmen had gathered around again. The door was pulled open, and the large black man who had been knocked out by Bai Yudong poked his head in.
"Kenny?" The black man didn't even glance at Bai Yudong, instead giving his boss a questioning look.
"It's fine, you can go," Kenny said.
"No." The black man shook his head, holding Bai Yudong's obstruction knife in his hand, the blade still stained with blood.
Bai Yudong's eyelid twitched as he shot him a provocative glance.
"He stabbed me with the knife," the black man grumbled, pointing to his shoulder where a bandage was wrapped around it, crimson blood seeping through.
Kenny seemed somewhat helpless. "So what are you going to do?"
"Stab him," the black man replied firmly as he stepped up onto the platform.
Bai Yudong aimed his gun at Kenny and teased, "Can't control your subordinates?"
"He's always like this." Kenny put down his cigar and shrugged at the Black man. "First, consider my safety, will you?"
"I'll kill him before he can hurt you," the Black man replied seriously, though his comical accent somewhat undermined the gravity of his words.
"Is his brain made of muscle?" Bai Yudong found it somewhat amusing, but there was an underlying concern; the two in front of him seemed oddly unfazed.
Kenny sighed and raised a hand to stop the Black man's advance. "Stop. Get down. That's an order."
The Black man glared, frustration evident in his eyes as he glanced at the two of them, then huffed and tossed aside his baton before stepping out of the vehicle.
"Don't pull any tricks," Bai Yudong tilted his head, aiming his gun at Kenny as he slowly walked to the table to pick up the knife and reinsert it into its sheath.
"Okay, tell me, what’s your purpose for finding me?" Kenny crossed his arms over his chest, regaining a calm demeanor.
"What level are you in RCA?" Bai Yudong pulled a cigarette from his pocket and lit it with the lighter on the table.
"Regional director."
"Responsible for where?"
"Currently, it's domestic."
"Oh?" Bai Yudong seemed incredulous. "Just you alone?"
"A team, just like yours."
Kenny appeared to have no intention of hiding anything. Bai Yudong asked a question, and he answered without hesitation; their exchange flowed smoothly.
"Why attack us?" Bai Yudong toyed with the uniquely designed lighter, its metal base stamped with a steel imprint—the RCA logo.
“That's something I can't say,” Kenny said, pouting as he gestured for the lighter to be returned to him.
Bai Yudong shot him a glance and stuffed the lighter into his pocket. “You have to admit, you seem to doubt that I would kill you.”
“I believe it, which is why I'm trying to remain calm while talking to you.”
“What are you looking for?” Bai Yudong scoffed, his gaze fixed on a map lying on the table. “Our base has been wiped out, not just one, and it was your doing, wasn't it?”
“That's correct.”
“Answer me, what are you searching for?”
“Don't get agitated.” Kenny raised both hands slightly and took a deep breath. “Let me ask a question first. What is your rank?”
“Lieutenant.”
“Oh?” Kenny chuckled. “Then my rank is higher than yours, so I suppose that means your information privileges are limited?”
“Go ahead and try,” Bai Yudong replied expressionlessly, while two Glasses Men stared intently at Kenny, their eyes filled with amusement.
“Alright, I concede.”
After a moment, Kenny seemed somewhat deflated. Though he maintained his composure, his expression revealed a hint of frustration.
