Chapter Fifty-Seven: Untitled 2
Caroline rushed back to the highway outpost before dawn, initially believing that the news she brought would infuriate Kenny. To her surprise, he listened quietly to her report, only asking a question about Zhou's situation at the end before dismissing her to rest. There were no reprimands or new orders, which left Caroline in a state of panic, fearing that after several failed missions, the Boss no longer trusted her.
This beautiful Foreign Girl quietly slipped into the back of a truck, intending to leave all her troubles behind and get some good sleep. However, her wish was unfulfilled; before she could fully drift into slumber, she was awakened by Kenny's bodyguard, the burly Black Man.
Caroline didn’t dare to be careless. In her eyes, aside from Aso, this imposing figure was the most mysterious in the entire department. She had followed Kenny for a long time, and this Black Man had always been by his side, yet she didn’t even know his name. He didn’t hold a position in the company; he seemed to be Kenny's full-time driver and caretaker.
“Kenny wants you; there’s a mission,” the Black Man said, his Chinese much more precise today, lacking the usual sing-song quality.
Caroline nodded, threw on her coat, and jumped out of the truck. A quick glance revealed something unusual on the Black Man's shoulder.
“Injured?” Caroline asked in surprise. After years of working together, she had never seen him hurt—mainly because he rarely undertook Field Personnel missions.
The Black Strong Man clearly didn’t want to discuss it; his thick lips curled downwards into an unattractive expression.
Caroline shrugged it off, twisted her stiff neck, and hurried up to Coach's office.
“You should have met already,” Kenny said, leaning back in his chair with a large cigar clenched between his teeth. He watched as Caroline aimed her gun at the surprised figure across from her and quickly raised his hand to stop her. “Don’t be nervous; sit.”
Although Caroline didn’t understand what was happening, she obediently lowered her weapon and sat at the table with a wary expression, her deep blue eyes fixed on the chubby man dressed in familiar clothes across from her.
Bai Yudong’s eyes twitched slightly as he skillfully concealed his emotions.
“Regarding what happened earlier, there’s no need to mention it again. I’ve already sent someone to retrieve Wen Tao from the coordinates provided by Caroline. Now, Mr. Bai, you can fulfill your promise,” Kenny said, appearing in a good mood today—at least not wearing the cold expression he had every day before.
“No rush; let’s wait until your people return,” Bai Yudong replied. He seemed to have not slept all night, bloodshot eyes betraying his fatigue; however, he still maintained a decent mental state. He remained seated on that bed as if his posture hadn’t changed at all.
Kenny nodded for once and turned to Caroline. “Once Wen Tao is back, you and Mr. Bai will go out together.”
"Understood." Caroline did not ask further questions. After a moment of consideration, she estimated that this fat man had defected and had come to pledge his allegiance.
"As for Zhou..." Kenny paused, his brow slightly furrowed. "What do you plan to do about him?"
Caroline lowered her head in shame, a fleeting glint of murderous intent flashing in her eyes as she said sternly, "I will take care of him."
"Forget it." Kenny put down the cigar in his hand, stood up, faced the car window, and pulled back the curtains. "We just need to handle the important matters well; there's no need to waste more time. We need to hurry back."
The inscrutable Boss lowered his head, paced around the table a couple of times, then raised his head and looked at Bai Yudong with a playful expression before turning to Caroline and saying softly, "The information you brought back last time has been confirmed."
Caroline was taken aback, unsure of what he was referring to.
"Overseas, some issues have arisen." Kenny smiled without warmth, secretly observing the expressions of both individuals. He added, "Currently, there is no accurate information, but there have been changes in the board."
The blonde woman was confused and did not understand what the Boss meant; she was part of the Field Team and couldn't grasp these matters! Moreover, there were outsiders present!
As an outsider, Bai Yudong also showed no reaction, as if his soul had already drifted far away.
Kenny didn't mind; he leaned down and stared into Bai Yudong's eyes, speaking softly. "I just want to tell you that your choice is correct. Do you know who currently holds the most shares domestically?"
Bai Yudong glanced at him and replied with a smile, "Why should I care?"
"It matters a little," Kenny said cheerfully without getting angry. "After all, you soldiers are out here in this remote area because of his orders."
Old Bai's expression, which had been as still as a pond, suddenly turned into boiling water; various emotions flashed across his face, disbelief filling his eyes.
Kenny was pleased with Bai Yudong's reaction; the defined muscles on his face twitched involuntarily as he laughed. "You should feel proud. As a small player, your pace aligns surprisingly well with those above... It's just that you're still a bit slow to react; otherwise, your men wouldn't have to die." With that remark, Kenny turned and left Coach.
Bai Yudong did not force Kenny to stay as a hostage with his gun. He somewhat dejectedly loosened his tightly clenched fists and let out a long sigh, remaining silent for a long time.
Caroline looked at the plump soldier with a complex expression. Before leaving, she couldn't help but turn back and ask, "Is Aso with your people?"
Old Bai glanced at her in confusion and shook his head. "I don't know..."
As dawn broke, there was no sound of roosters crowing.
The Armored Truck bounced along the road and finally returned to Luci's Farmhouse just as the sky began to brighten.
At that moment, Cao Liang and a few others burst out of the door, fully armed, their eyes wide as they stared at the dusty Armored Truck.
Jiang He and the others jumped out of the vehicle, wearing triumphant smiles as they embraced the remaining troops. With a grand gesture, they waved their hands and declared, "Unload the cargo!"
"Money?" Chao Yifan, clearly just waking up, rubbed his eyes as he stumbled out the door. A graduate student followed closely behind him, resembling a wealthy young master's devoted attendant.
Luci and An Zheng also stepped outside. Seeing that all three were safe and sound brought them a sense of relief.
"Wow! So much food?!" The practical members of the group had already opened the rear door and were staring in awe at the truck filled to the brim with rice, flour, sauces, and vinegar, their faces beaming with joy.
