Chapter Sixty-Four: Fishing for Trouble
"Run!" Ming Junwei shouted, pulling two dazed individuals and sprinting away.
Although the Zombies weren't particularly fast, their sheer numbers moving in unison created an impressive sight. The three of them raced along the base of the mountain, completely focused on escaping, with the rough terrain beneath their feet cracking under their weight and various debris scattered around creating obstacles.
Jiang He felt a buzzing in his head, the sound of rushing wind filling his ears. He could vaguely hear Ming Junwei shouting something ahead, but the words were lost in the chaos. Just as he opened his mouth to ask what was happening, a gust of wind blasted sand into his face.
Despite their speed, they couldn't outrun the Zombies that had the advantage of proximity. The Zombies near the steep incline were the first to ascend, oblivious to the three figures approaching them. The horde behind them shifted from a crescent formation into a chaotic mass, accompanied by swirling dust and swaying trees, resembling ghostly soldiers emerging from the underworld.
Of course, these spectral soldiers looked rather ragged.
Chao Yifan's bald head stood out in the wind as he sprinted ahead, looking far more composed than Jiang He and Ming Junwei, whose hair was blown wildly by the gusts.
With long legs effortlessly clearing piles of garbage, Chao Yifan reached the incline and decisively drew his pistol from his waist. Without breaking stride, he fired several rounds into the air.
Three Zombies had their heads burst open in a spray of Blood Mist and collapsed, rolling down the slope.
Dozens of other Zombies had already moved far ahead. Chao Yifan raised his gun again but reluctantly lowered it, turning instead to take aim at the approaching Zombies on the incline.
Jiang He and Ming Junwei finally caught up just in time to join Chao Yifan in firing a few shots before they all pushed themselves to run uphill with all their might.
Ming Junwei's rifle had a longer range, but today’s strong winds made him lose confidence in his accuracy. The trio charged up, dispatching a few Zombies clinging to the iron gate. Just as they were about to knock on the door, they heard another round of roars coming from behind them.
Jiang He, running last, turned around with his gun drawn at the sound only to see a large group of Zombies staggering down from above the incline!
"Get in quickly! There's more up ahead!" Jiang He shouted, unsure if the two behind him heard. He raised his gun and fired, sending a Zombie tumbling down the slope.
Ming Junwei peeked out, glancing up and down. The slope was less than a hundred meters from the small courtyard, and the Zombies were moving fast. The ones coming from the dirt road were still on their way, but they had clearly blocked the exit.
"We can't go in; if the Zombies surround the courtyard, we're done for," Ming Junwei said, stopping Chao Yifan from smashing the door. He pointed to another direction. "We need to head that way!"
Chao Yifan spat in frustration, feeling helpless. He wanted to fire a couple more shots but realized he was low on bullets and had to give up.
"Don't open the door inside!" Jiang He yelled at the top of his lungs as he ran after the other two.
The trio ran intermittently, occasionally shooting down an unsuspecting Zombie to draw the Horde closer. Jiang He and Chao Yifan kept an eye on the old houses on either side. Suddenly, they noticed Zombies jumping off a ten-meter-high earth platform, crashing heavily onto the roofs of the old houses.
"The Zombies have gone crazy..."
They had seen their fair share of Zombies—some ugly, some handsome, some filthy and disgusting—but this was the first time they witnessed a collective leap from a cliff. Despite being in danger, they were astonished.
"Which way now? Up or down?" Jiang He asked, glancing back. Not far ahead was the pigpen they had passed through that night, next to which was a section of collapsed earth wall that had been trampled into uneven steps over the years.
Below was a cornfield, and above was a back mountain—neither seemed like a good option.
"We need to wait a bit; the Zombies at the bottom haven't finished coming up yet. If we slip away now, they'll block our exit!" Ming Junwei hesitated, feeling overwhelmed. With so many Zombies around, their firepower was simply insufficient. The number of Zombies both above and below was increasing, and it seemed like the Yellow Wind had also picked up, howling fiercely as it blew.
"We're going to die! Can we really draw this many with just the three of us?" Jiang He exclaimed. He had talked too much while running against the wind earlier and now clutched his waist in pain.
The massive Horde did not disappoint the three, their steps unsteady yet resolutely approaching. If anyone in the courtyard were to peek through the crack of the door, they would surely be stunned by the sight of this Horde of Zombies crossing the street.
Ming Junwei saw that they were close enough and gestured for the three to retreat, shouting, "In a moment, we’ll run into the cornfield. Don’t scatter!"
"Should we run along the dirt path through the woods or deeper into the cornfield?" Jiang He quickly ran to the pigpen, stepping onto the fence and turning back to say, "The cornfield is too vast; it’s dark now, we’ll definitely get lost!"
Chao Yifan, with a bullet clenched in his mouth, efficiently filled his magazine and said, "There might be Zombies on the path; it’s safer to go into the woods. The corn stalks are so dense that they can slow down the Zombies."
"They're coming! Run!" Ming Junwei shot down two Zombies with a 'pop' and leaped down from the broken wall. Turning back, he saw that the other two were still standing there and urged, "What are you dawdling for?"
"Come back." Jiang He pointed blankly at the Farmhouse, "It's on fire..."
&&&&&&&&&&&
Jiang He was not the first to notice the fire.
The people inside the house heard gunshots from outside and initially felt delighted, thinking that Jiang He or Zhuzi had heard something and were responding. Unfortunately, things did not go as hoped. Song Yao and Cao Liang rushed to open the door only to be met by a few Zombies charging at them.
The two decisively locked the iron door and ran back inside, planning to observe the situation from the second floor. As Song Yao and others stood at the window on the second floor, Jiang He and his companions had already led the Zombies toward one side leading to the cornfield.
Cao Liang pressed against the glass, watching the torrent of Zombies outside in an instant understanding Jiang He's intentions. However, from their perspective, even if they could divert the Horde, how would they return? They couldn't possibly take a long detour around through the dirt path!
Since Song Yao and others were unfamiliar with the terrain, they sought out Ms. Luci from Hotspot Map, hoping she could devise a strategy to help guide those diverting the Horde of Zombies back safely.
Luci did not disappoint everyone's eager expectations. The Long-Haired Girl tilted her head and thought for a moment before proposing a suggestion that left several people around her wide-eyed.
"They're right to go into the cornfield; the Zombies are slower there. Once the main group of Zombies passes, we can follow them," Luci seemed quite pleased with her plan, excitement seeping through her words.
"Why follow them? Are we going to encircle them? That's impossible; there are too many Zombies," Cao Liang pointed out, gesturing outside. "Besides, who knows what else might be on the mountain!"
"Let me finish," Luci shot him a glare and lowered her voice. "The corn stalks in the fields are all dried up this season. If we bring gasoline and go in, with this strong wind today, we can roast some Zombies in no time!"
Not only were Song Yao and Cao Liang dumbfounded, but even the usually calm An Zheng couldn't help but open his mouth in surprise.
"Are we roasting them along with Brother Jiang He and the others?" Pan Luo, leaning against the door by the stairs, couldn't resist asking.
"Oh come on, the cornfield is huge; we can't burn it all down in one go. By the time we get there, they'll definitely have run far away. Plus, didn't Sister An say that Zombies are attracted to heat? It’s also a way to take out some Zombies!" Luci nervously swallowed, her big eyes sparkling as she looked at the stunned group, hoping for their approval.
Everyone fell silent for a moment. Cao Liang stroked his stubble and nodded slowly. "It's a plan. The wind will help spread the fire; it could definitely kill a large number of Zombies and draw the Horde over."
