Chapter 126: The Dark Room 0

Wu Wentao's tracking ability was limited to the wilderness; although there were traces to follow in the desolate and ruined city, the speed of the other party far surpassed his own. By the time he dodged the Zombies and managed to track down Hong Zhong, it was likely that the latter had already completed his business and returned home. Thus, Wu Wentao made a quick decision to find a way to rescue a few team members who had been harmed by Hong Zhong, and together they hurried back to the Underground Research Center as fast as they could. 0

Today, Kenny was surprisingly absent from the lab. Black Man had long grown tired of being pressed by Wu Wentao and Caroline about Kenny's whereabouts. Seeing Wu Wentao and his group return in disarray, he took the initiative to lead them to Kenny's lounge. 0

The vast Research Center was becoming increasingly empty; there were few living people left in the building. The former administrative office area was completely deserted, with only some dusty desks and chairs remaining, along with piles of discarded documents. Wu Wentao had been keeping an eye on Hong Zhong during this time and was not very clear about the personnel changes within the center. As he passed through the silent and desolate surroundings, he couldn't help but ask, "Black Man, where are all the people?" 0

"Ask Kenny," replied Black Behemoth, who had no neck. He pushed open the glass door at the end of the corridor. Behind it were two corridors: one led to a conference room, while the other housed Kenny's lounge. The entire office area had only a few Security personnel patrolling occasionally; the dim lighting made it look eerie. 0

"Kenny is alone in there?" Wu Wentao peeked inside. Both ventilation windows were tightly shut with curtains, allowing no light to enter. There were no emergency lights or flashlights inside; it was pitch black and silent. 0

"Maybe," Black Man shrugged, stopping a few team members that Wu Wentao had brought back. "One person is enough." The others had no objections and settled into their chairs to rest. 0

Taking a deep breath, Wu Wentao squinted as he walked in, standing silently for a moment before gently tapping on the doorbell. 0

"Come in." 0

A low male voice came from inside; it didn't sound much like Kenny. 0

Wu Wentao glanced back at the glass door; Black Man had already closed it and did not follow him in. 0

"Kenny, it's me, Wu Wentao." He couldn't quite place his feelings but felt an inexplicable unease. Therefore, he hesitated to push the door open and instead responded vaguely from outside. 0

"I know. Come in and close the door." The male voice said. 0

Wu Wentao's hesitation remained as he pushed open the door and stepped into the dark room. It was pitch black inside, filled with a strange fragrance. 0

The lounge wasn't large; Wu Wentao had been here before and remembered there was a row of sofas and a long table. He squinted for a while as his eyes gradually adjusted to the darkness, faintly seeing what appeared to be a figure sitting on his left. 0

"Kenny?" Wu Wentao called out tentatively. 0

There was no movement from the figure, but someone else on the other side coughed lightly and said, "Go ahead, what's going on?" 0

"Kenny?!" Wu Wentao was startled; he hadn't expected anyone else to be there. The voice was indeed Kenny's, but... it seemed somewhat different. 0

"It's me, what's up?" 0

"Are you okay? Who is this?" 0

"I'm fine, this is one of our own." 0

Kenny casually walked over to the sofa and sat down. Wu Wentao thought he saw him wave a hand in his direction before he asked, "What’s the matter?" 0

"Well... about that thing you asked me to do earlier..." Wu Wentao swallowed hard, carefully scrutinizing the other figure, thinking to himself, isn't that Hong Zhong? 0

"Did you catch a lead on Hong Zhong?" Sensing his subordinate's hesitation, Kenny chuckled softly and spoke up to dispel any doubts. 0

"Yes." Wu Wentao felt relieved and continued, "Today he took seven team members into the city center again. Just like before, during the infiltration, he deliberately stirred up the zombies and slipped away in the chaos." 0

"Oh?" Kenny pondered for a moment before asking, "Where did he go?" 0

"I don't know. I followed him through several streets and saw him get into an SUV that was probably waiting for him." 0

"Did you get spotted?" 0

"No, I was very careful. After the car left, I brought my team back." 0

"Very well, you can go rest now. When you see Caroline, let her come up," Kenny said as he stood up and moved to one side, the sound of flowing water echoing in the darkness. 0

"Understood." Wu Wentao, feeling puzzled, couldn't help but turn around to ask, "So... is there anything I need to do?" 0

"No need, just rest," Kenny's voice suddenly came from behind Wu Wentao, startling him into turning around quickly, nearly colliding with Kenny. 0

"Okay... I got it..." Cold sweat broke out on Wu Wentao's back as he wondered when Kenny had moved behind him. Stealing a glance at the sofa, he noticed the figure still sitting there, unmoving. 0

The door opened slightly, dim light spilling into the corner, revealing a pair of shiny leather shoes and neatly pressed trousers. It was Kenny; his upper body remained shrouded in darkness, and from his movements, it seemed he was opening the door for Wu Wentao. 0

"Go ahead. In a couple of days, there will be a mission for you. Make sure to rest well," Kenny reached out and patted Wu Wentao's shoulder, his hand feeling warm and damp. He withdrew his hand and chuckled lightly, "Is it hot?" 0

"Yeah, a bit..." Wu Wentao suppressed the urge to fling the door wide open and sidestepped out. Just as he turned back to glance at Kenny, the door was swiftly closed. 0

"What's going on?" Wu Wentao stood at the doorway for a moment in a daze, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead as he fled outside with a head full of questions. 0

Inside the room, the atmosphere was oppressive; darkness still reigned. 0

The two figures stood silently in the room, almost merging with the shadows, so quiet that even their breathing was barely audible. 0

After a long while, the figure on the sofa shifted slightly, seemingly changing positions. After a moment of contemplation, 0
