Chapter 139: Closing the Door and Releasing the Dogs
"Quick! He's getting away!" Brother Bear roared, ignoring the protests of the two women as he dashed out of the forest toward the truck. The two women had no choice but to follow him.
The imposing Horde quickly crossed the field and occupied the Wheat Field where the cabin stood, closing in at a visible speed. The earlier gunfire served as a perfect guide, and the cabin with its flickering lights and the military-green truck became the primary target for the Zombies.
Jiang He recalled where the keys were and immediately felt invigorated. He often found himself in tight spots, and without a strong heart and exceptional resilience, this reckless fool wouldn’t have made it this far. Seizing the moment before the Zombies fully surrounded him, Jiang He kicked open the driver's side door, sending it flying open with a loud bang that knocked down a roaring Zombie.
With his empty handgun shoved back into his pocket—there was no time to reload—he was relieved to have his Rifle and Sabre on hand. He raised his weapon and unleashed a spray of Blood Mist.
The truck was only three to five meters from the cabin door. Jiang He swung the rifle butt, smashing it into a Zombie's mouth full of silver teeth, then turned back to check on the two Mascots in the truck. "You two stay put—wait, what?" The cabin was empty; the cat and dog had already slipped through the half-open door.
"Damn it." The two eager Mascots had beaten him to it. Jiang He couldn't help but chuckle in frustration as he fired again, bullets tearing through several Zombies that lunged at the door, splattering blood across the wooden surface and leaving a shocking stain.
The truck's rear was covered with a tarp, and Jiang He initially planned to jump into the bed and retreat back to the cabin. However, the tarp was too much of an obstacle, leaving him no room to maneuver. The Zombie horde had already spotted him, closing in from all sides with an intimidating force. Just as he considered crawling under the truck for a moment of respite, he suddenly heard commotion from directly in front of him. Part of the Horde that had been charging toward the truck abruptly turned away. Before Jiang He could process what was happening, several figures burst through from a weak point in the Horde—a girl with a ponytail wielding a red-tipped knife carved out a crescent shape among the Zombies, sending heads flying into the air in a spectacular display!
Jiang He thought he must be seeing things as he pulled his Sabre from a Zombie's forehead in disbelief. It wasn't until another man and woman broke through the Zombies and approached him that he snapped back to reality: No way! People are coming to rescue him out here in the wilderness?!
Wait! Jiang He suddenly remembered that sneaky figure he had seen at the door earlier that afternoon…
"Why aren't you driving?!" The girl with the ponytail rushed up to him, noticing his dazed expression. Without hesitation, she gave him a sharp rap on the head. She wasn’t taller than Jiang He, so she had to jump slightly to deliver that blow, which looked particularly amusing amidst all this chaos.
"I-I-I don’t have the keys," Jiang He rubbed his head, realizing that the circle of Zombies was closing in tighter. He couldn’t afford to be surprised by this naturally outgoing girl; he grabbed her hand and began retreating toward the door.
"Hey, hey, hey, my friend hasn't arrived yet!" The Ponytail Girl was stubborn, shaking off Jiang He's grip and brandishing her short red knife as she prepared to charge into the Horde. Jiang He, helpless, fired a few shots to clear the Zombies in front of the man and woman beside him. The three of them gathered together, retreating while fighting. The Ponytail Girl said something to the two, causing the man to pause briefly before erupting in angry curses.
Seizing the moment, Jiang He rolled under a car and cut through the ankle of a Zombie standing at the door. He crawled out just as the door swung open, revealing several Zombies that had already made their way inside. Worried about the two Mascots, he leaped into the room and opened fire. The powerful penetration of his weapon unleashed a rain of blood within the room, plaster and flesh flying everywhere as several Zombies fell to the ground, extinguishing the last flicker of flame.
Suddenly, he heard muffled sounds behind him. Turning around, he saw that the man and two women had also stumbled in, covered in blood. As they entered, the horde of Zombies surged forward with a loud crash against the door. The three struggled to hold it shut, frantically searching for a way to secure it but only finding a broken latch.
"Come help us!" The Ponytail Girl shouted at Jiang He, who stood watching from a distance. Frustration welled up inside her; she had never held much hope for Brother Bear's plan, and now it seemed they would not only miss their ride but might also lose their lives.
Realizing the urgency of their situation, Jiang He scanned the room by moonlight and confirmed there were no remaining Zombies lurking inside. He rushed into the storage room and dragged out a small cabinet to brace against the door. Unfortunately, it was too small, and the force of the Zombies was overwhelming—like waves crashing against them. The two girls were visibly exhausted, while the only man among them could barely speak, panting heavily as he fought to hold back.
Feeling panicked, Jiang He looked around; there was hardly any furniture in the small room—only a bed that might or might not block the door. Even if it could, he doubted he could move it by himself!
Glancing around for inspiration, he suddenly had an idea. "You three hold on a bit longer!" he shouted before rushing to open the window.
The door and window faced the same direction outside where a massive flow of Zombies continued to swarm towards them. Fortunately, Jiang He had backed their vehicle up against the door for safety earlier. Although there were many Zombies outside now, they could only fit one or two between the car's rear and the door. With this in mind, he quickly pulled down the curtains again before any Zombies noticed.
"Are you done yet? We can't hold on much longer!" came another scream from Ponytail Girl at the door. Jiang He hurried over to see both girls nearly collapsing on the floor; the gap in the door was widening as gray hands reached through desperately trying to push inside.
He initially thought about making noise at the window to distract them but realized it was too low and feared that would only draw more Zombies in. With time running out as they were about to lose control of the front door, he abandoned his plans and rushed over to brace against it, swapping places with the exhausted girls.
"What were you doing?" Ponytail Girl gasped as she helped up her quiet companion. Before Jiang He could respond, there was a sickening creak from the wooden door.
This was bad! They couldn't withstand so many Zombies; if this stalemate continued much longer, that door wouldn't hold!
The boy pressed against it had lost even his voice but had cleverly propped a short stick against it at some point to create some leverage for himself. Knowing that holding out like this wasn't sustainable, Jiang He shouted angrily and drew his Sabre, slicing off a reaching hand that had slipped through the crack in the door.
The dark blood splattered across the walls as Jiang He held her breath, pushing against the door with the boy. For a brief moment, the door and its frame became one. Seizing the opportunity, Ginger wedged the blade of her knife into the gap between the door frame and the concrete wall, using it to brace the door. The impacts from behind continued relentlessly; the blade was embedded deep, but it wouldn't hold for long. With each powerful blow from outside, the knife pried further at the door frame, and she feared that soon it would be rendered useless as well.
