Chapter 144: Waiting for the Sun to Rise (Part 2)
Player One remained silent, while the second and third players were oblivious to the situation. Chao Yifan, with a thick face, claimed that Player One was too tired and needed to rest. He initially thought nothing of it, but in order to prevent the other two women from noticing anything amiss, he pretended to be affectionate and patted Player One on the back. However, upon doing so, he sensed something was wrong. Bald Kid felt a chill run down his spine and, taking advantage of the two women chattering away, leaned closer to Player One to listen. To his shock, he discovered that Player One had stopped breathing!
Chao Yifan panicked. He couldn't remember how hard he had hit her; she had nearly skinned him alive earlier. Surely she couldn't have died from just one punch? Doubtful, he gently turned her over and checked for breath and heartbeat... she was really dead.
In moments of crisis, one often finds a spark of ingenuity. Although Chao Yifan seemed somewhat reckless, he was not a heartless killer. These women were annoying, but they did not pose a threat to his life. Therefore, he had no intention of silencing anyone. As the other two women began to approach again with their chatter, Chao Yifan quickly came up with an excuse: "This lady says she has a headache; let's go to the side room." Without waiting for the two women to ask questions, he hurriedly sat up and started putting on his clothes. He was extremely nervous, fearing that the two women would discover something was wrong, so he kept talking to distract them from approaching Player One.
Just as Chao Yifan was frantically pulling on his pants, he suddenly heard the two women say something. His mind was elsewhere, so he didn't catch it clearly, but it seemed they weren't talking to him. Instinctively, he asked what was going on. The Second Female Contestant pointed behind him and said, "Sister-in-law is awake."
"What?" Chao Yifan's scalp tingled as he suddenly realized there was a draft behind him. Before he could turn around, two strong hands grabbed his shoulders, and in the next moment, he felt warm liquid dripping onto his neck!
Thanks to all the life-and-death struggles he'd been through recently, Chao Yifan sensed something was off. In a split second of panic, he flipped over and rolled off the edge of the bed with Player One's suddenly reanimated body alongside him. Before he could get up, he grabbed Player One's head and slammed it against the stove. At that moment, the second and third players still hadn't reacted to what was happening.
The fact that Player One had transformed from a living person into a Zombie was shocking. Chao Yifan couldn't process it immediately; relying on his honed instincts from recent days of training and fighting, our Chao Tianwang found himself in a floor battle with the Zombie while still half-dressed. After several rolls back and forth without either side gaining control, the two women began screaming in panic.
The Zombie became even more agitated at their screams and lunged toward the edge of the bed. Chao Tianwang couldn't bring himself to flee; instead, he managed to grab hold of the Zombie's ankle and yanked it down hard enough for it to fall flat on its face. Seizing a stool by the bed's edge, he smashed it through a window—creating an escape route for the two women while also alerting those outside that something was wrong.
Under normal circumstances, one Zombie wouldn't be enough for Chao Yifan to worry about; however, today’s events were bizarre—an ordinary person suddenly died and then transformed into a Zombie shortly after?! Even someone as thick-skinned as Chao Yifan felt unnerved by this realization. If it hadn't been for Second Female Contestant's warning just now, his head might have already been crushed like corn by that Zombie.
Holding onto the struggling Zombie while the two women scrambled out through the window at breakneck speed, Chao Yifan heard Old Shepherd shouting outside. His anger flared even more. He kicked the Zombie away and hastily pulled up his pants before rushing into the main room to grab a kitchen knife.
Just then, another Zombie attacked through a side door; Chao Yifan swiftly slashed its throat with one stroke just as Old Shepherd entered the Cave Dwelling. With rage in his eyes, Chao Tianwang retaliated with another slash that sent blood spraying everywhere.
Then everything went dark; bloodied and bewildered Chao Yifan stunned everyone around him as the Zombie burst out of the door and caught some unsuspecting Farmers off guard. Soon after that, a group of people found themselves trapped in the yard.
Chao Yifan spoke quickly and vividly, his face and body still stained with blood, making his gestures even more animated. The crowd was astonished and felt a sense of dread for him; to be honest, if it were them, they would likely have little chance of survival against the sudden attack from the dead behind them.
"That was quite dangerous. You should go wash up; look at all that blood, it's alarming," Ming Junwei said, giving him a pat on the back. "Surviving such a disaster must mean good fortune ahead. After a day of chaos, we're all exhausted. Let's take some time to rest; this isn't over yet."
Everyone nodded in agreement. A few climbed onto the bed to lie down and take a short nap alongside two drunken men and two children. Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei had not drunk any alcohol and were still in good spirits. Zeng Yadong's eyes were wide open; she had no intention of sleeping and kept gripping the ancient Miao Knife, lost in thought. Luci fetched a basin of clean water from the water tank and accompanied Chao Yifan outside to help him wash off.
On a chilly October night, Chao Yifan stood bare-chested in the yard, confidently telling Luci beside him, "Pour it!" Luci wasted no time and splashed a basin of cold water over him.
"Is it cold?" Luci asked.
"Cold, cold, cold..."
Luci was used to their stubbornness and chuckled as she got up to fetch him a towel from the Cave Dwelling.
Chao Yifan shivered for a moment, vigorously rubbing his stiff face. Suddenly, he felt a throbbing pain in his palm. Looking down, he saw two rows of deep bite marks clearly visible, with a few drops of blood seeping from the edges.
Luci lifted the door curtain and saw him standing outside in a daze. She called out, "Come inside! It's not cold for you!"
"Huh?" Chao Yifan jolted back to reality, rubbed his hands together, and smiled. "Coming in now." He quickly ran inside.
The first half of the night had been chaotic, but the latter half finally passed without incident. Aside from Ming Junwei, Chao Yifan, and Cao Liang, everyone else had either sat or lay down to sleep.
