Chapter One Hundred Fifty-Five: Resurrection (Part Two)
Silence, a deathly silence.
The once boisterous crowd fell abruptly quiet, like a still pool of water. Faces filled with anxiety turned left and right, searching for the source of the voice. Some whispered among themselves, while others clenched their fists. Apart from the lingering echo of the last words spoken, the corridor was filled only with the sound of heavy breathing.
"Very well, maintain this silence." The voice rang out again, clearly transmitted through the speakers to every ear. The man's voice was bright and reminiscent of old radio broadcasts; it was evident he spoke softly and slowly, each word pronounced with unusual clarity: "From now on, everything I say is extremely important. I need you to listen carefully and remember it. I will say it only once; this concerns your new life."
Among the crowd, some could no longer contain their emotions and shouted, "Who are you? What are you trying to do? Where is this place?" Others murmured in agreement or pulled their companions back to silence them.
The man paused for a moment, cleared his throat, and said, "I know you have many questions in your minds; there's no need to rush. I will provide answers, but not now. Do not interrupt me again; I am not very patient. Keep your ears open and listen closely."
"I believe you still remember the last images before you woke up. Yes, some of you were besieged by a horde of zombies, some fell from great heights, some were engulfed in firestorms, and some were gravely injured... Without exception, your companions abandoned you to perish alone in the cold night, waiting for the final moment to arrive. But now you are still alive because you encountered me. You are the most outstanding survivors; you have endured in a city ravaged by zombies. You overcame shortages of food and clothing and survived in a perilous environment with extraordinary willpower for a long time. You should be among the builders of the New Order, not trembling in fear as you die; your journey is far from over—death is not your destiny." The man's voice resonated powerfully, its tremor echoing through the silent corridor and gradually penetrating each person's heart.
"Indeed, you have doubts, fears, and skepticism; none of that matters. What matters is that you are still alive..."
"Now, an opportunity lies before you; I give you the power to choose..."
"Will you become builders of the New Order or continue to live in fear and uncertainty?"
"Will you join those rewriting history or return to the ruins to scrape by?"
"Right now, there is a door ahead—a door behind which lies unpredictable danger. You can choose to walk through that door to stand before me or retreat back into the cramped room..."
"I will be here watching you, waiting for your answer..."
"Do not disappoint me."
"......"
The voice suddenly ceased, and the corridor returned to a state of dead silence.
It felt like a collective daydream, awakening to confusion.
"What does this mean?"
"Was someone just speaking?"
"Are we dead?"
"What opportunity? I don't understand."
"…"
The crowd erupted once more, questions spreading like a tide, whispers and murmurs filling the air, panic taking hold… A greater sense of unease and agitation swept through, washing over everyone's fragile will. Shouts, curses, wails, and roars merged into a cacophonous symphony.
Cao Liang and his companions silently retreated to a small room, their faces etched with seriousness. The trio from Bull Terrier followed suit, glancing around as if lost in thought.
"What do you think?" Cao Liang rubbed the stubble forming on his chin, his expression grim.
"Are we at the headquarters of Anli?" Luci couldn't help but crack a joke; aside from Cao Liang and Song Yao, no one else laughed.
Flower Boy, who had previously clashed with Song Yao, snorted disdainfully. "It's obviously a conspiracy. This whole 'new life' thing is a lie! Someone has deliberately set this up to bait us!"
Song Yao and the others shot him a glance but remained silent.
"I was thinking… it’s like selecting soldiers, right? Survival of the fittest? What’s behind that door? If we find that person, can we join them?" Bull Terrier seemed inexplicably excited, his beady eyes blinking as he looked at the pale-faced group.
"Do you want to join those lunatics?" Flower Boy shot him a glare and turned to Cao Liang and the others. "What are your thoughts?"
"Weren't you the one who didn't believe us?" Luci replied with a hint of amusement, tossing two sanitary balls their way.
Flower Boy looked a bit deflated, his expression somewhat grim as he muttered, "We're all prisoners here, what's so impressive about that?"
"Come on, come on, let's keep the peace," Bull Terrier quickly interjected, trying to lighten the mood. "How about we form an alliance? More people means more support."
Cao Liang didn’t respond to him but noticed Song Yao deep in thought and asked, "What are you thinking?"
"Qianqian was right; this is a survival test," Song Yao said with a slight smile. "This place must be some kind of rca. Holding this selection event is probably to replenish their ranks."
"I think you're right, but it's a shame Sister An and Aso aren't here," Luci said anxiously. "It's obvious they want us to go through that door. What happens if we refuse?" Luci touched the walls on either side but found no traps or mechanisms that would shoot arrows or spray poison.
"I don't know. That door seems dangerous; those who go through might be exactly what they want," Song Yao shrugged helplessly. "If we want to get out, we have to accept the challenge."
"I agree with this lady's opinion," Bull Terrier said shamelessly, quickly asking, "What are your names? We're comrades in the same trench now!"
"Who said we're in the same trench?" Luci shot him a glare.
The quiet black-haired girl peeked her head back from the doorway and timidly asked, "A lot of people have gone over there; what should we do?"
"Let’s wait and see!" Flower Boy declared confidently, casting a challenging glance at Cao Liang and the others. He patted the black-haired girl on the shoulder reassuringly and said, "Huihui, don’t worry. As long as I'm here, you'll be safe."
