Chapter 157: The Prison Break
As Cao Liang and his companions fought against the Zombies in the darkness, Ming Junwei began the prison break operation.
Ming Junwei had always been the backbone of the team; no matter how great the trouble, as long as he was present, others felt at ease. However, this time, the usually invincible Ming the Great Hero showed signs of despondency, which truly worried Xiao Wei. Fortunately, this low point was only temporary. After several rounds of encouragement and persuasion from the others, Ming the Great Hero gradually regained his usual composure, burying his fatigue deep within. In any situation, a person's emotions play a crucial role. Although Ming Junwei temporarily cast aside his negative energy, the difficulties before them did not vanish along with it.
First, they needed to get beyond the iron bars.
The structure of the cell was quite ordinary; apart from the iron bars, there were smooth walls that offered no leverage for escape. Xiao Wei initially considered wetting her clothes to bend the bars, but upon looking around, she realized there were no sturdy levers to use, and with handcuffs on her wrists, her movements were severely restricted. After pondering for a while, they concluded that since there was nothing useful inside their cell, they would have to rely on what was outside.
The four of them were located in a cell deep within the prison. For some reason, the black-clad men had not placed them with other prisoners. The cells on either side were empty and situated along one side of a curved archway. Ming Junwei recalled the route they had taken upon entering; he did not remember seeing any surveillance devices. It seemed that security here was tight enough that no one had considered the possibility of a prison break. In any case, the less attention their captors paid to them, the more advantageous it was for Ming Junwei and his companions.
After some discussion, they decided to try a simple plan: Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei would pretend to fight while Wheat called for a guard. Jin Bo would stand by to intervene. If a guard came in, it would be perfect; Jin Bo was confident he could take him down in one blow. Although it sounded foolish, it was still a plan. Thus, they took their positions and began to act out their prison drama.
"Help! There's a fight going on!!! Someone come quickly!! They're killing each other!!!" Wheat shouted as she leaned against the iron bars, making loud clanging noises while amplifying her voice with all her might; her youthful and clear tone echoed down the corridor in waves.
"Is there a situation?" Xiao Wei and Ming Junwei took stances as if ready to brawl while Jin Bo listened intently for any sounds from outside.
"Nothing yet." Wheat's face turned bright red as she waved her hands for them to continue their act. She raised her voice an octave higher: "Ahhhh!!! Someone come quick!! They're killing each other!!!"
...
Five minutes later, Wheat sat down on the ground hoarsely, wanting to cry but unable to produce tears; the three who had been pretending to fight also relaxed their stances and slumped down on the floor with bitter smiles.
It truly lived up to that saying: no matter how loud Wheat shouted, no one would come to save them.
"Does anyone even care?" Xiao Wei gasped, leaning against the wall. To make their fight seem intense, the two had rolled around on the ground several times, but in the end, he got so into it that he forgot there were no spectators at all.
"Let's stop; we were being foolish just now," Ming Junwei said, rubbing Wheat's head and not forgetting to award the little girl a certificate: "You shouted well, very expressive." Wheat rolled her eyes and gave them both a dismissive gesture.
The cell seemed to have no distinction between day and night. Ming Junwei estimated they had been here for about four or five hours. The light outside the iron bars was still bright, showing no signs of dimming for sleep. On the other side, the shouts of the other prisoners had also weakened; they probably had no strength left.
"Let's wait a bit longer; they have to feed us eventually, right?" Jin Bo said, touching his still swollen eye socket and clicking his tongue. "If it comes to it, we'll just have to force our way out!" With that, he clumsily rolled up his sleeves, gripped a bar of the iron railing with both hands, pushed against the wall with his feet, and pulled desperately in the opposite direction. The young man gritted his teeth, veins bulging on his forehead, and his biceps visibly tensed as the iron bars emitted a creaking sound.
"There's hope!" Xiao Wei exclaimed as he saw things were getting serious and hurried over to help. The two adjusted their positions and began to pull on the bars with all their might.
Ming Junwei sat aside cheering them on while staring at the iron bars in a daze. He initially wanted to advise them not to waste their energy, but suddenly an idea flashed through his mind that he couldn't quite grasp in time. He walked over to knock on the bars and reached down to feel where they connected with the ground, finding no flaws at all. It seemed perfectly constructed. However, this observation sparked another thought.
Ignoring the two still straining against the bars like bulls, Ming Junwei tried to extend one hand out through the bars, wedging his handcuff ring onto one of them. He turned sideways as much as possible to push his shoulder out through the bars while using both hands to secure the chain link around the iron bar. His arms strained as he endured the pain of the cuff digging into his wrist, reaching toward another bar on the other side. His fingertips could touch it but couldn't grip it. Helplessly, Ming Junwei retracted his arm and lifted up the hem of his hospital gown to tear off a piece with his teeth.
"Brother Ming... what are you doing?" Wheat asked curiously, wondering if these three had lost their minds. Were they really planning to use brute force against iron?
"Help me stuff this under the cuff," Ming Junwei explained without elaborating further. He extended his shoulder again to secure the chain link onto the bar and shook his wrist slightly, signaling Wheat to fold the torn cloth thicker and wedge it between the cuff and his skin. Although Wheat didn't understand what he was doing, she didn't ask further and simply complied.
Ming Junwei exerted himself; his face turned red as he felt the thin cloth immediately press into his flesh under the cuff. Despite seeming self-destructive, Ming Junwei continued with determination, gritting his teeth as he pressed harder. The cuff tightened painfully against his wrist skin, quickly leaving deep blood marks. The two nearby who were struggling with the iron bars paused their efforts at Ming Junwei's actions; panting heavily, they glanced at the bars which remained completely still.
In contrast to their futile efforts, Ming Junwei's actions were evidently yielding results. As blood began to ooze from his wrist due to pressure from the cuff, it gradually slid up toward his forearm. The excessive tightness cut off blood flow in that area, causing both hands to change color immediately. Xiao Wei's eyes lit up as he likely guessed Ming Junwei's intention; he quickly crouched down in front of him and used his own cuff to strike hard against the taut chain link stretched by the iron bar between Ming Junwei's hands.
Ming Junwei felt his wrist going numb. He took a deep breath and exerted himself once more, the cuffs digging painfully into his flesh as he finally grasped the railing on the other side. Though his wrist throbbed with pain, he refused to give in. With both hands gripping the iron bars, he leveraged the tension from the cuffs and forcefully pulled back. At last, with a loud snap, the iron chain broke apart!
As Ming Junwei continued to exert himself, his body jolted, and he felt a sudden relief from the sharp pain in his wrist. Looking down, he saw that the cuffs had indeed shattered, and his hands were finally free.
"That's ruthless!" Xiao Wei exclaimed, genuinely impressed as he quickly tore off a corner of his shirt to wrap around Ming Junwei's wound. Admiration aside, Xiao Wei still didn't quite understand and asked, "What's the point of breaking the cuffs?"
"It allows my arms to stretch out a bit more," Ming Junwei replied with a self-deprecating smile. "Being restrained is inconvenient. If those people..."
