Chapter 170: Racing Against Time
"I accidentally bumped into it." Wheat quickly turned off the lights, and the scene plunged back into darkness.
"Uh..." The Curly-Haired Young Man was a beat slow to react. Seeing Wheat hurriedly putting on her shoes, he asked in confusion, "Where are you going?"
Wheat rolled her eyes and said, "There's a meeting upstairs. I'm leaving first, bye." With that, she dashed out and closed the door behind her.
The young girl ran swiftly, ignoring the gazes of passersby, and headed straight for the Elevator. Just as she was about to close the door, a hand reached in, blocking the closing doors.
Wheat looked up to see the patrolling man in black from earlier. "What do you want?"
The black-clad patrolman smiled, looking Wheat up and down with a scrutinizing gaze. Lowering his voice, he said, "I'm on duty tonight. Are you free?"
"What?" Wheat was momentarily taken aback, not understanding what the patrolman meant.
"Don't be nervous; I won't say anything." The man grinned and pointed towards the Control Room, teasingly adding, "Look at you, all wet. That guy's not good enough for you, right?"
Seeing his gaze lingering on her, Wheat quickly figured out his intentions. Just as she was about to kick him away in anger, she suddenly remembered something. Suppressing her fury, she feigned mystery and winked at him, whispering, "Are you free now?"
"Oh?" The patrolman had initially intended to just flirt a little but was surprised by how easy it was to engage with this girl. His square face broke into a wide grin. However, he didn’t rush things and appeared hesitant as he said, "I'm on duty right now; don't rush it. Are you in the internal area? I'll come find you tonight."
Wheat puffed out her still-developing chest and awkwardly tossed her hair back. Trying to suppress a shiver, she said in a sultry voice, "I can't wait! Let's go to the Laboratory; there's no one there."
The man in black raised an eyebrow, his tone shifting slightly. "What do you want to go there for? It stinks."
"There’s no one behind the quarantine door, and the control center can’t see that side." Wheat swallowed hard, inching closer to the increasingly restless man in black. She leaned in and whispered, "You haven’t been there before, have you?"
"Well..." The man in black frowned, contemplating for a moment. It wasn’t too far, and there were no cameras in the safety passage. Taking a little break wouldn’t get him caught. His expression brightened as he said, "Wait for me a moment." With that, he hurried off.
Wheat bit her lip, secretly calculating her options. She had no weapons on her and knew she wouldn’t stand a chance against him in a fight. But if she could run into Cao Liang and the others, that would be ideal. She opened the door for Song Yao; she wasn’t sure what lay beyond it, but judging by the man in black's expression, it didn’t seem dangerous. The chances of them crossing paths with Song Yao were quite high.
However, therein lay the problem: what if they didn’t meet? Wheat gasped quietly, breaking into a cold sweat at her impulsive plan. If she missed Song Yao, it would truly be walking into a trap. With that thought in mind, Wheat quickly changed her mind and shut the elevator door before the man returned, pressing the button for the File Area floor.
Now with no other options available, she held onto Summer Rain's access card. Her permissions only allowed entry to the third and fourth stories, while the laboratory was on the second floor. There was no way she could force her way in, and she couldn’t even be sure if Song Yao’s group was on the second floor of the laboratory. Therefore, Wheat decided it was best to regroup with the little boy before making any further plans.
This little girl, who had always been protected by others, displayed an unexpected level of initiative. After getting separated from the main group, she didn’t panic; instead, she cleverly saved two people in succession. In terms of achievements, she was certainly not inferior to Ming Junwei and others.
Meanwhile, this group was busy taking advantage of opportunities in the Underground Structure while Kenny rushed back to fill in the gaps.
Arriving at the base in a disheveled state, Kenny didn’t even have time to enjoy a smoke. Just when he finally reached a calm agreement with Aso and thought he could relax for a moment, Aso’s words pushed him back into action.
"An Zheng, An Zheng, An Zheng..." Kenny muttered this name repeatedly as he walked along. Upon reflection, he couldn’t help but chuckle; he didn’t even know what this woman looked like!
At some point, this unremarkable name had somehow made its way onto everyone’s list of people to find. It was as if overnight everyone began searching for her while she vanished without a trace. Kenny successfully obtained documents carried by An Zheng, but documents were lifeless; it was still up to living people to solve the problems.
Among the three key individuals, Kenny had previously captured two: Director Hu and Professor Niu. These two old heads had fallen into his hands early on; however, things hadn’t progressed to this stage back then. Director Hu was clueless about everything while Professor Niu was as stubborn as an ox. When Kenny’s teacher requested them, he didn’t hesitate to order their transfer to RCA Research Base. His teacher went happily to greet them but ended up receiving only Old Professor’s corpse and a distraught Director Hu. Stubborn Professor Niu chose death over submission during transport while Director Hu had no principles left; he would have gladly joined RCA just to save his own skin—but his head was empty... Aside from providing some outdated communication lines from Establishment that had long been abandoned, he was of no further use.
Kenny's ambitious plan soon came to light, leading to his suspension by RCA. In a decisive move, he didn't wait for the Ministry of Justice to take action; instead, he took his team and left without hesitation. That wasn't all—on his way to the Jinzhong Research Center, Kenny swept through the RCA contact points like a whirlwind, and by sheer coincidence, he managed to pull out a thorn from the Establishment, returning with a bounty.
The moment he set foot in the Gobi Desert, he certainly didn't expect surprises waiting for him—one after another. First came Aso, then An Zheng; two women crucial to him were unexpectedly regained on the same day! The Bodyguard followed closely behind the Boss, observing Kenny's barely contained joy as he turned his face away. It was astonishing; this man, who never showed his emotions, seemed overly exhilarated today.
However, just minutes later, Kenny's good mood evaporated in the conference room as he slammed his palm down on the solid wood round table, leaving a dent.
The representatives present were heads of various districts within the Underground Structure. Seeing the Boss smiling brightly at first made them think there was good news to share. Little did they know that in an instant, the Big Boss's demeanor shifted dramatically—from a refined and approachable young talent to a fierce enforcer.
The room fell silent as everyone shrank back in their seats, afraid to lift their heads. Only one man in his thirties stood at his seat, flustered and gesturing helplessly, unable to utter a word. He was the head of the File Area and had the unfortunate luck of being the first questioned by the Big Boss. After just a few exchanges, the Big Boss exploded.
The conversation went something like this:
"Did you bring this month's new list?"
"I did! The distribution chart for each district is also here!"
