Chapter 174: Racing Against Time 5
On the third floor, in the File Area.
Kenny's first batch of agents split into two teams. The group heading through the safe passage was ambushed by Song Yao and others, while the team at the Elevator faced no obstacles and successfully reached the archive room.
As previously mentioned, the second and third tier personnel in the building mainly consisted of former Establishment and RCA staff. These individuals were akin to second-class citizens, harboring an instinctive disdain and fear towards the black-clad Field Personnel. The level one alert had already left these unfortunate souls, who had experienced a previous crisis, terrified; not to mention the psychological trauma caused by a fully armed squad of Field Personnel storming in.
Fortunately, this time, they were not the targets. The Black Ops team ignored the helpless clerical staff and headed straight for the archive room.
The archive room was not far from both Elevator Passages. Summer Rain was in charge of managing the archive room, assisted by two other young former Establishment employees. In what seemed like an effort to match the tense atmosphere of the day, the archive room's main door had been locked from the inside, and all three managers had vanished without a trace; many who were asked knew nothing about it.
The leader of the Field Team sensed something was off and immediately dispatched a team member to report back. After several unsuccessful calls for a response, he kicked open the door, and a strong smell of blood rushed out as the door swung open.
The gathered clerical staff gasped in shock as they beheld chaos within the archive room. Storage cabinets containing files were overturned, papers scattered everywhere, and a mangled male corpse lay across some debris, blood having soaked through the papers and trickling down the edges of the cabinets. Additionally, the forceful kick that broke down the door startled another person—a woman standing with her back to the entrance. Before the door swung open, she seemed to be moving deeper into the archive room but now stood hunched over in place.
"Raise your hands and turn around," commanded the Squad Leader in a stern Southern accent, while others aimed their guns at her back.
"What are you doing?!"
At that moment, a woman's voice called out from another corridor within the archive room as several men and women rushed in.
Summer Rain was drenched in sweat; disregarding the astonished looks from others, she pushed through the crowd to enter, followed by three men dressed in Security uniforms. One of them appeared injured and was being supported by the other two.
"Who are you?" The Squad Leader glanced at her, signaling his subordinates not to fire.
"I am the file room manager, you—ah!" Summer Rain responded, turning her head to see the horrific scene inside the file room, and she couldn't help but scream. At that moment, the woman who had been facing away from everyone turned around, causing chaos among those outside the door.
Summer Rain stared in terror, her eyes wide as she gazed at the girl who had spoken to her just an hour ago, her body trembling involuntarily.
The woman in the file room was none other than the girl who had talked to Summer Rain in the Elevator. However, she now looked completely different. Her body was hunched over like a beast ready to pounce on its prey, her long hair disheveled, her face smeared with blood. Blood was gushing from her neck and left side of her chest, staining the white lab coat draped over her. Hunger and aggression flickered in her eyes as she bared her lips, revealing white teeth stained with bits of flesh, continuously hissing at the doorway.
Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei exchanged shocked glances. How could the lively girl from earlier suddenly turn into a corpse? Was it because she had been injected with some kind of drug? But that didn't make sense; Summer Rain seemed fine.
"What is going on? You are the file manager? What have you been doing? What are these three people doing?" The Squad Leader, seasoned from countless encounters outside with Kenny, didn't regard a transformed woman as a threat. His attention was more focused on Summer Rain and the others.
Summer Rain quickly composed herself and couldn't help but glance at her former colleagues a few more times before explaining, "An hour ago, there was a jailbreak in the cultivation area. The person in charge of the Flesh Fungus Warehouse had an accident, and these security brothers were protecting me while I went to submit a new file over there." Summer Rain spoke without missing a beat; the Squad Leader didn't notice any flaws in her story and turned his gaze toward Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei supporting someone else, asking curiously, "What is going on here?"
"There was a Level One alert earlier. We encountered the escapees near the safe passage. We were outnumbered, and they got away," Summer Rain spoke rapidly, appearing genuinely frightened. Seeing that Field Personnel still wanted to ask questions, she quickly exclaimed, "She's moving!"
Field Personnel turned around to see that the woman was staggering toward the door. Knowing that no valuable information could be extracted further, he waved his hand to signal to eliminate the transformed woman. A team member received the order and drew his pistol, aiming at the Female Zombie. A flash of light erupted as he fired; the bullet struck her head, causing her to fall backward and lie still.
"Someone take care of this place; those injured should be taken to the medical area," instructed the Squad Leader. He pointed at Summer Rain and said, "You come with us."
"Ah?" Summer Rain was still reeling from the sudden deaths of both individuals when she froze and asked, "Where... where are we going?"
"To report to the Boss," replied the Squad Leader simply while gesturing for her to follow.
Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei were anxious, yet there was nothing they could do. Summer Rain tidied her hair and said to the two of them, "Take him to the Four Stories medical area." After saying this, she cast a deep glance at Ming Junwei, her eyes seemingly filled with a sense of farewell. At that moment, the two of them were in the role of Security, so they could not engage in too much conversation with her. They could only respond with a calm expression and watch her fragile figure disappear into the depths of the corridor.
As the crowd dispersed, the Blue-Clad Staff arrived with equipment to clean up the scene. With no other options, Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei exchanged glances with Jin Bo, who was disguised among the crowd in a white coat, and helped the disguised An Zheng toward the Elevator corridor.
Wheat watched helplessly as Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei left through the door. The little boy in her arms was still struggling fiercely, his once innocent black eyes now devoid of childhood innocence, filled with bloodshot madness. Wheat tightly held the little boy close, hiding deep within the archives room, using all her strength to cover his mouth. Her palm was damp and sticky, covered in plasma and secretions.
