Chapter 177: The Return of the Dead
Due to the positioning at both ends of the corridor, the command to "duck" caused quite a bit of chaos. Ming Junwei shouted it for Cao Liang's benefit, while the Security team thought their "teammate" was warning them and responded simultaneously. Both sides shouted out loud, resulting in a scramble to avoid danger, but only Cao Liang, positioned in the middle, remained still.
Cao Liang had nowhere to escape. Pushing Luci and Wheat aside at such a critical moment was already his limit, and the airtight door beside the corridor opened sideways, not allowing for a forceful entry. Thus, those who should have ducked did not, while those who shouldn't have avoided danger did so blindly. The one who fought with all his might to protect others ultimately could not save himself.
Gunfire erupted in the straight corridor just a hundred meters away, with flames spitting out a wave of dense bullets that instantly engulfed Cao Liang, who stood in the middle.
This man of few words but with a warm heart, who always stood in front of his companions, did not forget his teammates even in his final moments. He used his flesh and blood to create a barrier, absorbing all the deadly bullets into his broad chest.
Metal fragments exchanged their most primal communication with vibrant life; the explosive gunpowder and splattering blood completed their final dialogue.
As the gunfire subsided and the smoke cleared, the towering figure knelt on the ground, riddled with bullet holes on both front and back, bloodied and head bowed.
Beside him, the airtight door was ajar, revealing Luci lying outside, blood flowing profusely as she convulsed.
Ming Junwei and his companions stared blankly at the horrific scene before them, their hands trembling around their guns.
Among the crowd across from them were several individuals injured by stray bullets from Ming Junwei's side. The remaining Security personnel rushed over in a panic; one group gathered at the airtight door while others approached Ming Junwei's group with concern, checking for any injuries.
The airtight door was pulled open, and Wheat looked through tear-filled eyes at the two bloodied figures on the ground. Her body trembled as if something was lodged in her throat, preventing her from making any sound.
"Boss, there's an injured guy over here." A Security personnel spotted An Zheng leaning against the corner. She wore a Security uniform with her hair tucked under her cap and was not immediately recognized.
Jin Bo moved his fingers slightly and stepped forward with his knife drawn. Ming Junwei reached out to grab him. Jin Bo turned back, his expression filled with both anger and confusion.
Ming Junwei simply shook his head gently, his face showing immense despair.
Two Security personnel helped Wheat up from the ground. Her white coat and name tag around her neck once again provided cover as they entered the airtight room and found a small boy lying motionless on the floor.
"This is our responsibility now." Ming Junwei stepped aside to block the Security personnel attempting to carry An Zheng away. He forced a grim smile onto his face and said, "There’s another group we couldn’t stop."
"Oh?" The lead Security officer raised an eyebrow and cursed under his breath. "Wasn't it said that everyone was here?"
"There are too many people; let's go." Ming Junwei had no idea that this group was sent by Bai Yudong, nor did he know about the bodies scattered all around the surgery site just ten steps away. He could only force himself to speak nonsense.
Xiao Wei, quick-witted, exchanged a glance with Jin Bo. Jin Bo understood and stepped forward to pull the silently weeping Wheat into his arms, suppressing his anger as he pretended to comfort her. "I'll take you upstairs."
"Then you all clean this place up; deal with that Kid right here." The lead Security officer didn't suspect anything and waved for his team to move ahead. He turned back and asked, "Do you need us to leave some people behind?"
"No need; capturing people is more important." Ming Junwei's expression was sincere as he quickly convinced the Security captain.
"Sister Qianqian, Brother Cao!" Wheat could no longer hold back; tears streamed down her face as she cried out and rushed to the two. Cao Liang's eyes were still open, seemingly holding onto the joy of reuniting with everyone, but his face was covered in blood, and his chest was caved in, breathless; Luci was not dead yet but was on her last breath, having suffered internal injuries from stray bullets. Fragments of her organs mixed with blood flowed from her mouth.
Ming Junwei and the others fell silent, feeling dizzy as if boiling oil had been poured into their heads, causing a sharp pain.
Luci's breath grew weaker, a familiar smile flickering across her face. She opened her hand, revealing a blood-stained card.
Ming Junwei took a deep breath and crouched down to pick up the card from her hand. Looking into her lifeless eyes, his heart tightened.
Luci moved her hand slightly, tracing lines on the ground before she could no longer muster the strength and coughed up a mouthful of blood, closing her eyes for good. Wheat cried out as she held Luci's body tightly; her tears mixed with Luci's blood, leaving wet streaks on her face like petals blown away by a fierce wind.
Xiao Wei took off his outer garment to cover Cao Liang's body and carried it into the airtight chamber. The little boy had not yet awakened and lay beside the equally unconscious An Zheng. Jin Bo's eyes were red; unable to bear Wheat's desperate cries any longer, he turned away to secretly wipe away his tears.
"Wheat." Ming Junwei called softly. The little girl trembled and sobbed, "Brother Ming, I won't go anymore... I won't go..."
Ming Junwei felt a deep sorrow and could only hold the fragile girl tightly in his arms, whispering in her ear, "Sister Qianqian and Brother Cao want you to live. You understand what they mean; you're a smart girl, right?"
"But I don't want to go anymore." Wheat's face was streaked with tears as she sobbed uncontrollably, her heart shattered.
"I'll carry you." Ming Junwei ruffled the girl's hair and without hesitation lifted her onto his back. Jin Bo and Xiao Wei wrapped up the bodies and carried them into the airtight chamber before shutting the door tightly.
"With no fire, we can only leave them here," Xiao Wei sighed bitterly, unable to hide his sorrow.
Jin Bo tilted his head and pointed at a pool of blood on the ground. "Did Luci just write something?"
The others looked over at the sound and saw several crooked bloodstains next to Luci's body. Ming Junwei recalled that when he took the card earlier, Luci seemed to have made some movements intentionally or unintentionally, but he hadn't paid attention at that moment.
"What is this?" Ming Junwei said, holding the small card, a wave of helplessness washing over him.
"End of days?" Jin Bo squatted down to examine it, then looked up and asked, "What does it mean?"
Xiao Wei also found it strange and, suppressing her sadness, tried to make sense of it. "End of days? What is 'end of the sun'?"
"What does Qianqian want to tell us..." Ming Junwei shook his head in confusion. At that moment, he couldn't think about anything else; the little girl on his back was still sobbing, and his mind was a jumbled mess. "We need to leave; we can't stay here long. We have to go back the way we came."
As they were speaking, they suddenly heard a noise—a crash, as if some metal object had been knocked to the ground.
"Quick, retreat." Ming Junwei sensed something was wrong and hurriedly signaled for Jin Bo and Xiao Wei to help An Zheng and the little boy escape. Just as they took a few steps, Jin Bo suddenly stopped.
"There's someone here!" Jin Bo handed the little boy to Xiao Wei and gripped his knife as he approached the door. Ming Junwei frowned, about to stop him when Wheat on his back suddenly remembered something and exclaimed, "Sister Qianqian came out from here! It could be Sister Yao!"
Upon hearing this, the three of them realized the gravity of the situation. Jin Bo quickly pulled open the airtight door, and a figure rushed out from inside, directly tackling him.
"Damn! A zombie! Run!" Jin Bo was knocked to the ground, his Combat Knife slipping from his hand. The figure on top of him wasn't Song Yao; it was clearly a recently deceased female zombie!
Xiao Wei was holding one child and had another on her back. In a moment of desperation, she kicked out at the female zombie, sending it crashing to the ground. Jin Bo seized the opportunity to roll aside, grabbing his Combat Knife as he did so. He threw it at the zombie with all his might. The sharp blade embedded itself deep into the zombie's chest, but it showed no reaction. Instead, it flipped over and screamed, "I am not a zombie!!"
Just as it prepared to lunge forward...
