Chapter 180: The Choice
"Kenny, Establishment is here." As the right-hand person of the boss, Caroline reported what she deemed the most important news, disregarding the blade at her throat. As soon as she spoke, the pressure on her neck increased, prompting her to fall silent. Being someone who also walked on the edge of danger, Caroline could sense the chilling murderous intent from the young man behind her. If it weren't for the larger man calling for a halt at a critical moment, she would have likely met a grim fate.
The situation unfolded suddenly; the side with the numerical advantage was caught off guard and had their leader captured by Ming Junwei and his companions. It wasn't that they were incompetent; after all, everyone was wearing the same uniforms, and Ming Junwei stood right beside Caroline. No one would expect "their own" to suddenly turn against them as if under some influence. Ming Junwei and his team had their own struggles; they were just steps away from freedom when this Foreign Girl intercepted them. Initially, they could have played along, but everything fell apart with Cheng Long's unexpected appearance.
Caroline understood that An Zheng had let his guard down momentarily, but for Ming Junwei and his companions, who had been personally brought in by Cheng Long, there was no reason for him not to recognize them—especially with Jin Bo, an old acquaintance, among them. Thus, their escape plan was shattered. Ming Junwei had to make a choice in that fleeting moment: survival or destruction? It was indeed a pressing question.
Fortunately, Ming Junwei was not one to willingly embrace destruction. Given his past tendencies to resort to explosive confrontations, this seemingly calm man harbored a fierce spirit within. With determination, he resolved to act decisively; he raised his gun and took into account both old grievances and new enmities. Utilizing the golden three seconds of surprise attack, he shot down the mastermind, Cheng Long.
Everyone present, including Jin Bo and Xiao Wei, was stunned at the moment Cheng Long fell. This moment of shock provided Ming Junwei with an opportunity; cunningly taking advantage of it, he began collecting hostages before anyone could draw their weapons against him. Following closely behind him were Xiao Wei and Jin Bo. Because Xiao Wei was carrying An Zheng, he was a beat slower and nearly allowed Caroline to slip away. Fortunately, Jin Bo, known for his agility, swiftly grabbed hold of the Foreign Girl's golden hair and positioned his blades at her throat.
However, there was a clear disparity in understanding between the quick-draw expert and the soldier. While Xiao Wei grasped Ming Junwei's intention of holding a hostage, Jin Bo only saw that incredible shot that killed Cheng Long. In a fit of rage, he tightened his grip and intended to behead the Foreign Girl. Just as Caroline feared, if it weren't for Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei urgently calling out to stop him, she would have surely met her end.
Ming Junwei recognized that this Foreign Girl held significant value—far more than the other foreigner they had captured. The moment Caroline stepped into the elevator, Xiao Wei had identified her. Back then, while with He Yong's team, they had gone through great lengths to locate the power station only to be ambushed by this very same Foreign Girl, resulting in heavy casualties among his comrades who barely managed to escape.
In any case, their desperate surprise attack proved effective. On one side, due to Caroline's identity; on the other side, those outside remained confused about why their own were turning against them. They were patrolling outside the high walls and were unaware of the chaos unfolding within the underground structure. Not only them but even the security personnel inside were equally baffled. Previously, when they set off explosions around them while relying on loud communication methods, they successfully misled those below into confusion. So far, aside from Summer Rain—who remained loyal yet conflicted—no one realized that the escapees had disguised themselves and boldly emerged from below ground.
Returning to the standoff scene where silence lingered and tension thickened,
Kenny's expression turned somewhat awkward. It was only his second day back at base; good news and bad news had been flooding in relentlessly, making it hard for him to process everything. While he was out running errands, everything here seemed calm; how could it erupt into chaos just as he returned? What frustrated him even more was that when he witnessed "his own" turning against each other for a brief moment, his first thought was "What’s going on?" instead of his usual "As expected!" Kenny was reluctant to admit feeling a hint of defeat—even though it was true.
However, Kenny wasn't Kitty; after a brief moment of distraction, he quickly regained his composure. This man whose heart no longer raced stepped forward into danger's path. Clearing his throat, he spoke in the gentlest tone possible: "Don't hurt them."
Field Encirclement and Ming Junwei's group were momentarily stunned. Who was he talking to?
"Put down your guns, no more bloodshed," Kenny continued. "Now, who can tell me what happened here?"
The Field Personnel exchanged confused glances, equally baffled, but they complied with Kenny's request, lowering their weapons a few inches so they no longer aimed at vital spots. The three from Ming Junwei remained vigilant, not uttering a word. Jin Bo and Xiao Wei could only play the role of enforcers, leaving the speaking to Ming Junwei. Standing with Kenny, Bai Yudong kept signaling to the others, but they ignored him. Only Xiao Wei's expression fluctuated, showing signs of emotional instability.
At this point, Su Lan could no longer remain silent. Her mind was blank, unable to discern whether she felt joy or sorrow. Although she knew these individuals were not to be underestimated, she never expected them to cause such chaos. Filled with fear and despair, Su Lan stated that these people were the ones she needed. With life and death hanging by a thread, the astute Su Lan couldn't afford to speculate on Ming Junwei's plans; she had to stick to her own script.
She noticed Kenny's brow twitch slightly, though his face revealed no anger or joy; he simply responded with a calm "oh."
"Kenny..." the blonde Foreign Girl tentatively called out. Seeing that Jin Bo showed no signs of aggression, she quickly added, "An Zheng! An Zheng has been found!"
Ming Junwei thought it was bad news; he wished he had let Jin Bo take her out instead and quickly moved to shield Xiao Wei. However, they were outnumbered and outgunned; their position was completely covered by firepower, making any movement futile.
"Xiao Ming! Enough! Stop it! This can be resolved; we don't need to escalate things further!" Su Lan, feeling increasingly incoherent, realized that without Kenny's input, she had to make one last effort.
"How can it be resolved?" Ming Junwei replied with a bitter smile, lamenting: "Old Cao and...
