Chapter 194: Mobilization in the Gobi Desert
"Focus on your work and don't worry about what's happening outside," Kenny said, standing with his hands behind his back outside the laboratory, reassuring the anxious research team.
As Shaoshan had suspected, the reason for the relatively weak resistance on the perimeter was that Kenny prioritized the underground research center. The building housed more security personnel than field personnel or mercenaries, and after sealing off several areas, he freed up a significant number of people. If all were deployed, it would be no problem to crush Shaoshan's forces. However, Kenny had his own plans; to him, the safety of the laboratory was paramount. Regardless of whether the intruders were from the Establishment or RCA, as long as they did not interfere with the operations of the Underground Research Center, he wouldn't mind flattening the surface.
The Black Behemoth understood their boss's nature well. Noticing that the gunfire outside was intensifying, they decisively redeployed security personnel from within the building to secure the underground area, effectively sealing off access to the two-story laboratory. The outer defense forces were initially under Bai Yudong's command, but Kenny instructed him to collaborate with Chen Zhao Zhou to control the situation. If they truly could not manage it, they were to retreat underground and seal all downward channels within the building. Caroline had always trusted Bai Yudong zero percent, so she proactively approached Kenny and exchanged tasks with him. Originally assigned by Kenny to protect Aso and ensure her safe transport underground—essentially acting as a bodyguard—Caroline refused to take on that role, believing that the battle outside the high walls was more critical. Although Kenny had contingency plans and didn't care about losing ground, there would still be some negative repercussions. The Foreign Girl couldn't bear to see her boss suffer any losses; she felt that if Bai Yudong were sent out, he might betray them.
Thus, Caroline led the field personnel and mercenaries on the surface to fight against Shaoshan while Bai Yudong was dispatched to bring Su Lan over.
Bai Yudong had no objections; he would do whatever task he was assigned. However, Kenny's attitude this time seemed somewhat unusual. He did not prepare to strike back at the attackers as he had in the past; instead, he appeared to be evading confrontation. This man, who usually maintained a poker face, revealed nothing in his eyes—some people's gazes resembled clear autumn waters, while Kenny's was like a stagnant pool.
Bai Yudong silently organized his gear and excused himself to go to the restroom, escaping Black Man's line of sight. The restroom in the underground Living Area was somewhat shabby, illuminated by a dim yellow mining lamp that cast eerie shadows around him. Old Bai opened each stall door in succession to confirm no one else was present before unzipping his combat suit and pulling out a long rectangular box from his pocket. He unlocked it and took out a vial containing a lightly flowing red liquid. A hint of sorrow surfaced on Old Bai's gaunt face as he gritted his teeth and twisted open one end of a sealed cap into a syringe, inserting the glimmering needle into his arm's vein.
He slowly pushed down on the plunger; the light red liquid gradually entered his bloodstream. The injection site began to swell slightly as his veins gradually bulged and darkened in color, forming a web-like pattern that quickly spread throughout his body. Bai Yudong fought against an urge to vomit and slowed down the injection speed. After only one-tenth of the drug had been administered, its intense effects became apparent, causing him to panic internally as he hesitated whether to continue injecting.
He had long known that Kenny's drug was different from what he used but had not realized how significant their differences were. The serum Kenny provided was highly addictive; once discontinued, organ functions would rapidly deteriorate—essentially a case of drinking poison to quench thirst. This drug allowed Bai Yudong to retain consciousness while enhancing physical capabilities but could not achieve Song Yao's level of harm resistance. Given his current state, it would be impossible for him to complete a rescue or escape alone; thus, he discreetly contacted An Zheng in hopes of acquiring some medication.
Unfortunately, that batch of drugs had been deemed unreliable; Old Qin had not completed his own concoction and temporarily substituted it with student medications—all of which were injected into Experiment without leaving any residue behind. However, fortune smiled upon them; although An Zheng could not obtain Song Yao's batch of drugs, she fortuitously discovered Kenny's usage.
That day when An Zheng visited Kenny's office, she happened upon him administering his drug into Old Qin’s face. At that moment she paid no mind but later noticed the light red vial sitting on his desk during her conversation with Old Qin. An Zheng kept her guard up and spent several days subtly probing during experiments to understand what that vial contained. Kenny did not hide anything from her; perhaps out of confidence or a desire for An Zheng to expedite her research, he openly informed her about taking medication himself and submitted a detailed report based on his personal experience.
Therefore, when An Zheng received Bai Yudong's distress signal, her first thought was of that vial. Since Kenny spent most of his time in his office with little opportunity for her to enter—and with every move closely monitored—she found almost no freedom outside of her time in the laboratory.
Fortunately, during the first few days of the new file creation, Summer Rain took the initiative to contact An Zheng.
Summer Rain had narrowly escaped during the last jailbreak, hitching a ride with Su Lan to avoid disaster. After that, she returned to her post and had no chance to meet those audacious individuals again. However, the thrill of a jailbreak was intoxicating; once you experienced it, thoughts of a second attempt would linger. So, upon returning to her position, Summer Rain found it hard to settle down. She kept an eye on various newly submitted documents. Due to a restructuring within the organization, she was promoted from managing Experiment Subject files to general file management. Although her title was shorter by three words, the content she could access increased thirtyfold. Perhaps because Summer Rain was present that day, Kenny seemed pleased with her and entrusted her with significant responsibilities. Little did the strategic Kenny know that those around him were unknowingly playing a game of deception.
Summer Rain couldn't find any information about Ming Junwei and his group in the experimental files and briefly thought they had been executed. By chance, she discovered that the laboratory had changed hands and that the nearly lifeless An Zheng had successfully risen to power. Thus, under the pretext of creating new files, Summer Rain managed to meet An Zheng in the laboratory. The file creation process was tedious, giving her ample time to earn An Zheng's trust, especially after An Zheng learned that Summer Rain could see the little boy; their relationship immediately grew closer.
Consequently, the task of stealing the reagent fell to Summer Rain. As an internal staff member, her responsibilities were trivial yet crucial, often requiring face-to-face meetings with Kenny. She had frequented that small office countless times. The saying "a thief at home is hard to guard against" held true; no one would constantly watch a girl who spent all day shuffling papers. Summer Rain successfully seized her opportunity when Kenny was away on the ground floor and stole the reagent from his drawer. The incident happened quickly; An Zheng only managed to replicate a harmless solution of the same color. Initially contemplating poisoning it, she realized that laboratory supplies needed prior approval and found herself too busy commuting between Song Yao's research area and the second-floor laboratory to manage it.
As for what would happen once Kenny discovered it, that was entirely outside the consideration of both women. After all, there were no surveillance cameras in the office, Security personnel were everywhere in the corridor, and the reagent was carelessly placed—who would be blamed if something went wrong? Women's thoughts could be dangerously complex or dangerously simple.
Summer Rain handed over the reagent to Bai Yudong, who then gave her the key to the first-floor laboratory. While Bai Yudong played with intravenous injections in the restroom, Summer Rain unlocked the laboratory door and pressed the awakening button as instructed by An Zheng.
Thus, under the long night sky of the Gobi Desert, a large group of people began their respective actions at different locations but at the same time.
The scene shifted back to the restroom, continuing with Bai Yudong.
Bai Yudong made a fatal mistake here; following his usual method of injecting drugs...
