Chapter 204: The Highest Place 0

Contrary to what everyone imagined, Jiuquan City was still overrun by Zombies, with the Horde occupying this aerospace city like masters. The usual stench was masked by today's rain, and the streets were filled with the aftermath of war. Collapsed and shattered buildings were everywhere, their charred remains clinging to the corners of this desolate city like stubborn scales; rotting corpses and fragmented structures littered the area, while overturned cars lay quietly on the desolate streets, enduring the relentless wind and rain. 0

As the military vehicle entered the main road, it could go no further. The chaos here was worse than expected, forcing everyone to park at a junction for easier turning and proceed on foot with weapons and supplies. 0

"The tallest building..." Jiang He climbed onto the roof of a car, murmuring as he looked around. The message left by Bai Yudong was similar to that of the graduate students; both groups were supposed to be waiting for them on some rooftop. However, the reality was grim. Jiang He worried whether Ming Junwei's group, all injured, would be able to safely reach a high floor. 0

There were many tall buildings here. Standing in the street and looking around gave a sense of being surrounded by mountains; all the skyscrapers seemed similar, none standing out distinctly. 0

" Jiang He, are you confident?" Shaoshan separated the soldiers into defensive positions and noticed Jiang He's bewildered gaze. He couldn't help but feel concerned. Accompanying Jiang He to find their companions was a reluctant decision; now that they were so close, Jiang He would not give up on searching, even if it meant brushing past everyone else. Shaoshan felt that this place was somewhat special; unlike Jinta County, which had completely turned into a ghost town, this area was still teeming with Zombies. They had to be cautious; one misstep could lead to disaster. For the same reason, Shaoshan's group was not small either and carried weapons, while Jiang He's mentioned companions lacked such firepower. 0

"They must be here," Jiang He said confidently. With Song Yao found, how could they not locate Ming Junwei? But how exactly should they find this tallest building? If it weren't for the fear of attracting Zombies, Jiang He would have wanted to shout out loud. 0

While everyone remained on guard, Song Yao and her two companions hurried to a dilapidated shop at the roadside to change out of their bloodstained clothes. Hearing Shaoshan and Jiang He's conversation made them anxious. They scattered in search of useful clues. 0

"Shaolian, there's a Zombie at the left intersection by the traffic light ahead; we can't linger here." Two scouting soldiers hurried back to report. One wiped rainwater from his face and added, "But there is a TV tower over there; it's quite tall." 0

"Hmm?" Everyone turned their attention to Little Warrior and quickly grasped the implication. Indeed, a building with an open view didn't necessarily have to be a skyscraper; given how densely packed with Zombies this area was, many high-rises likely had Zombies wandering inside as well. Rather than risking entering a Zombie-infested apartment building, it would be better to look for a landmark structure. 0

With this thought in mind, they felt more confident and quickly retreated from the main road, following the direction indicated by the soldiers through several intersections. Sure enough, in the distance emerged a straight TV tower; its body bore faintly visible red characters spelling "Moutai Distillery." If anything stood out, it was definitely that TV tower. 0

"To see the mountain while running towards it requires a map," Shaoshan said thoughtfully, pointing at the mass of Zombies at the other end of the street. "We could force our way through by car, but we only have one chance. Once the Zombies in this city catch wind of us, we won't have any retreat left." 0

"Well, let's walk," Jiang He nodded and replied, "Aren't you going to leave someone to watch the vehicle?" 0

"No need, it's not wise to spread our firepower right now." Shaoshan chuckled, giving him a playful slap on the back. "You just focus on finding people." 0

"Shaolian, do you have any signal flares left?" Luci recalled the scene from that night in the Gobi Desert and suggested, "If we fire a flare in that direction, it might draw the zombies away." 0

"That's actually a good idea." Shaoshan's expression brightened as he rubbed his fingers together. "Hurry up and launch it." 0

"Launch? Where are we going to find a flare?" Wang Zhongyu said helplessly, rolling his eyes. "We dropped them all." 0

"You're such a waste." Shaoshan rolled his eyes again and came up with another plan. "You guys push forward first. I'll create some noise from behind to cover you." 0

"What about you?" Jiang He disagreed, returning Shaoshan's earlier words. "It's not wise to spread our firepower right now." 0

"Vice Commander, we don't have flares, but we still have two grenades. What do you think?" A soldier stepped forward proudly, holding two black grenades in his hands. Jiang He and the others quickly stepped back a few paces, wary of the deadly weapons. 0

With the plan set, Wang Zhongyu led his team along with Jiang He toward the television tower, while Shaoshan took a few people in the opposite direction to find a spot that wouldn't affect their retreat to detonate the grenades. The empty city was eerily silent; the sound of the explosion could carry far away. The only regret was that due to the weather, the explosion likely wouldn't ignite any building materials, leaving their plan to attract zombies with heat stalled. 0

Song Yao and Luci had better physical senses than the others and took on the role of scouts, running ahead of the group. At first, Jiang He felt uneasy but then remembered Luci's performance at that time; she was truly exceptional. So he decided to follow behind with everyone else instead of getting in their way. 0

For safety's sake, Shaoshan led his team far back. Meanwhile, Jiang He's group had already crossed the last intersection. Ahead at the crossroads, zombies were gathering, and there were quite a few staggering zombies on the overpass spanning both sides. In a vague moment, Jiang He felt as if they had returned to that ancient city where suffering had begun; his thoughts drifted for a moment as a sudden urge to go back crossed his mind. He wondered if that city was still plagued by hordes. 0

In the blink of an eye, they stealthily approached a mobile phone superstore at the street corner. The store was diagonally across from another building... 0
