Chapter 207: Another Rainy Night
As evening fell, the rain intensified, heavy clouds completely obscuring the sky, shrouding the entire city in an elusive darkness. Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei, having experienced the last flash flood, felt a lingering unease at the torrential downpour. Considering the roaming Horde in the city, Shaoshan and his companions had no choice but to delay their rendezvous and remained at the Belfry. During this time, no gunshots rang out, suggesting that Wang Zhongyu had likely found a temporary refuge. The two had been comrades for many years, and this simple understanding of seeking safety was still present; as long as no danger signals were raised, it meant they were both relatively safe.
The five Soldiers accompanying Shaoshan were all combat personnel; the medic was with Wang Zhongyu. Ming Junwei and Jin Bo's wounds could not be delayed for long, as this rainy weather would only exacerbate their pain. Naturally, Shaoshan could not stand by idly, so he called Wheat to boil some water again, igniting a fire in the room to carefully examine the injuries of both men. He decided to proceed with a Surgery on them. In the past, such tasks had always been Old Ma's responsibility, but unfortunately, Old Ma had died under a hail of bullets at the Shanxi Base, leaving no one else available.
At that moment, the graduate student and Yin Nuo followed the wisp of blue smoke wafting from the window.
The graduate student firmly believed that those inside were Jiang He's group, so he made no effort to conceal their presence. After all, their little stealth skills had been taught by Jiang He and were hardly impressive in the eyes of Soldiers. Thus, as soon as they stepped into the Archway, they found themselves confronted by gun barrels pressed against their waists.
"Friendlies!" The graduate student quickly dropped his Machete and raised his hands high, explaining, "I’m here looking for someone—I'm looking for Jiang He. Is he here?"
Yin Nuo remained silent; it was pitch black under the Archway, making it impossible to see anything around them. If the graduate student was mistaken in his judgment, both would inevitably face some trouble.
The two Soldiers paused for a moment, realizing they were lucky to be with Shaolian; they hadn't moved much at all while two groups had come right to them. They lowered their guard and one led them to where everyone else was gathered.
The graduate student and Yin Nuo both sighed in relief; after such bad luck for so long, they finally caught a break. Yin Nuo couldn't help but express her curiosity softly, "Jiang He really did it... that's amazing."
"Everyone in his group is impressive!" The graduate student chuckled foolishly. The leading Soldier was left puzzled—what was so impressive? If it weren't for our Shaolian and Wang Lian, it would be a miracle if your friend made it out of the Gobi Desert alive.
The Soldier kept his thoughts to himself; he didn't have time to engage in banter with them. They passed through the courtyard and navigated around a foundation stone surrounded by protective barriers. An orange glow emanated from one room where voices could be faintly heard—it sounded somewhat strange. The Soldier didn’t explain further and walked straight up to the door before knocking: "Vice Commander, we have a situation."
"Come in and talk," Shaoshan replied from inside, sweating profusely as he extracted shrapnel from Jin Bo's wound, too busy to say much more.
The Soldier pouted and pushed the door open, allowing the two to enter. The room was spacious, with a small hall immediately upon entry. In the center stood an octagonal table, and a "No Smoking" sign was posted on the wall. On either side of the hall were petite arched doorways without doors, with flickering firelight emanating from the left side. As they stepped inside, a strong smell of blood hit them. Yin Nuo frowned slightly, her right hand discreetly reaching for her weapon at her waist. Unlike a graduate student who would have surrendered their arms, she was allowed to pass once it was clear they were there to find someone.
On the cement floor behind the doorway sat a red clay stove, flames roaring and crackling as a group of people gathered around it, trying not to block the light. A man in military uniform was focused intently on something he was doing.
Zeng Yadong noticed their arrival and approached to investigate. Upon seeing the dazed graduate student and the wary Yin Nuo, he instinctively took a step back and asked cautiously, "Who are you?" As soon as she spoke, the others turned their attention toward them. Wheat gasped in surprise, while Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei couldn't help but gasp in shock, internally exclaiming how tough these people seemed to be!
"Hey? Wheat! It's me! Do you remember me? Comrade Xiao Wei, Brother Ming! Hi hi!" The graduate student felt a weight lift off his chest; it really was this group! Excited yet scanning the surroundings, he noticed no one else was present.
"You... how come..." Xiao Wei slapped his forehead as he remembered this cowardly figure and exclaimed in disbelief, "You're still alive?"
"Remembered me? Hahaha, I've been searching for you all!" The graduate student had grown bolder since their last encounter; seeing that they still recognized him, he quickly brought Yin Nuo into the room and asked, "Where's Jiang He? Where's Yi Fan?"
The group exchanged glances, unsure of how to respond.
After a moment of thought, the graduate student understood the odd looks in their eyes. Taking advantage of his familiarity with them, he settled down beside them and began explaining everything that had happened. From parting ways at the Farmhouse to encountering Jiang He in the wilderness, he recounted how they had driven thousands of miles to reach the Gobi Desert while waiting for news. His skills were average, but he was articulate enough to summarize several months' worth of important events in no time. Watching Ming Junwei and the others look bewildered made him uneasy; what was going on with them? Had they all changed?
Zeng Yadong listened attentively and shrugged with an odd expression. "We haven't met up with Jiang He yet; it's raining too heavily. We'll set out again tomorrow morning."
"That's fine; as long as it's you guys, I feel reassured." The graduate student didn't mind Ming Junwei's silence. Noticing Shaoshan wielding a scalpel and making deep cuts on a young man nearby, he frowned and asked, "Hey buddy, what are you doing?"
Shaoshan shot him an annoyed glare and muttered, "You think you can do better?"
The graduate student shrank back slightly and nudged Yin Nuo. "She can handle it."
"Tsk tsk, I never expected this," Ming Junwei said in amazement as he looked at the lively graduate student. "You were so fragile back then; now you've become the most energetic one among us."
The graduate student had always had a good impression of Ming Junwei. Rubbing his head, he chuckled, "The wheel of fortune turns, doesn't it..." After saying that, he realized it could be misinterpreted and quickly corrected himself, "No, no, what I mean is, um, I've grown too... Yi Fan and Brother Cao, they..."
