Chapter 228: Strength and Weakness
Wang Zhongyu strode in, took off his hat, wiped the sweat from his face, and winked at the two people present before pulling a chair and sitting down in the main seat. Jiang He noticed a flicker of displeasure on the foreigner's face across the table, but it was just an expression; he didn’t say anything.
“Shaoshan didn’t tell you I was here?” Wang Zhongyu leaned his arms on the table, his playful demeanor clashing with the serious atmosphere of the meeting.
“No… he only mentioned that someone would be picking me up, didn’t say it was you,” Jiang He replied with a grin, feeling a bit more at ease. After all, Wang Zhongyu was somewhat on his side. The three people across from him had expressions that were completely at odds—one side seemed to plot schemes while the other showed resistance. They spoke sweetly, but he had no idea what they were really thinking.
Wang Zhongyu nodded and didn’t continue chatting with him. He turned to Shanzhai Chen Baoguo and said, “All equipment has been moved to the 106th floor. The Spare Generator is on the 105th floor and can last for five days at most. I hope we can get results from the lab within that time.”
“Impossible,” Professor Yang interrupted sharply, snorting coldly. “The testing procedures are very complicated; five days isn’t enough.”
“That’s your problem,” Wang Zhongyu shot a glance at the old man and said calmly. “The Generator can only operate for five days. If there are no results, I’ll take my people and leave.”
Yan Guofeng, also known as Shanzhai Chen Baoguo, coughed twice to interrupt the agitated Professor Yang and hesitated before saying, “Wang Lianzhang, there has already been consensus on this matter from above; it’s crucial, so we should consider it carefully. To conduct the experiment, we’ve recalled a large number of elite researchers; we just need you to provide some support in terms of power—”
“Why don’t we switch? I’ll gather the Research Team, and you can handle the power generation?” Wang Zhongyu interrupted his rambling without hesitation and teased, “The directive from above is within permissible conditions; five days is my limit. Equipment or manpower is trivial; I can do my best to accommodate that. But I can’t conjure up electricity out of thin air. Also, keep in mind that the defenses in the CBD Zone are only temporary. With zombies rampaging through the city, our combined forces aren’t enough to fend them off. If our line of defense collapses, we might have to evacuate early. So…”
Wang Zhongyu paused and looked ominously at Professor Yang, speaking each word deliberately: “Five days is the maximum limit. I’ll leave you with the data disk and two living subjects; after five days, whether you have results or not, I will take my people away. Do you understand?”
Old Man Yang was furious but couldn’t explode; he huffed through his nostrils, making his beard tremble as he grumbled irritably, “Got it. I’ll do my best.”
“Good.” Satisfied with the response, Wang Zhongyu put his smile back on his face and reached out for a mock handshake with Yan Guofeng, saying cheerfully, “Pleasure working together.”
"Pleasure to cooperate," Yan Guofeng said with a forced smile, trying to brush off the situation. Seeing Wang Zhongyu getting ready to leave, he hurriedly added, "So we can start the experiment today, right?"
"Not today, let's do it tomorrow," Wang Zhongyu replied as he put on his hat and gestured for Jiang He to come over. He continued, "The circuit is still being debugged. I'll notify you once it's complete. These two will come over to my place tonight; if you need anything, feel free to find me." With that, he directly led the two out of the conference room.
Yan Guofeng remained poised to speak, watching the three retreating figures. His expression shifted from pale to flushed as he sighed and reluctantly sat back down in his chair.
"What kind of person is he? No sense of reason at all?" American Guy Jones grumbled, his thick accent coloring his Chinese as he expressed his dissatisfaction with what had just happened.
"Just a lackey of the Establishment; there's no reasoning with them," Yan Guofeng said, pressing his fingers against his forehead in frustration. "Yang Lao, you're in a tough spot. Try to speed things up; times have changed, and I can't do much either."
Professor Yang Liangdu snorted haughtily and stood up, sweeping out of the room.
On the 107th floor of the building.
Wang Zhongyu led the two away from the RCA personnel's guarded office area, striding through the empty Glass Workplace before casually grabbing a chair and sitting down. Jiang He and Song Yao exchanged glances and looked around. Seeing that he had no intention of moving on, they reluctantly found their own seats and waited for him to continue.
"What are you staring at me for?" Wang Zhongyu rummaged through his pockets and pulled out a cigarette, lighting it with a flick. Noticing the two staring intently at him, he chuckled and asked, "What's up?"
"Aren't you going to tell us something?" Jiang He asked, scratching his head in confusion. He glanced at Song Yao and added with a wry smile, "You were so impressive just now; aren't you afraid of provoking them?"
"Borrowing their courage?" Wang Zhongyu scoffed at that notion. "It's like a dragon needs to coil up and a tiger needs to lie low; they're not stupid; they know what they're doing."
Hearing Wang Zhongyu's boastful tone that seemed to shake the mountains, Song Yao couldn't help but question, "Hasn't RCA always been at odds with the Establishment? Why suddenly take such a low stance?"
"The situation has changed; RCA has become a thing of the past, and now they can't even put on a show," Wang Zhongyu said casually, lowering his voice. "RCA has already disbanded; now it's just an empty shell. Calling them a shell company isn't an exaggeration."
"Really? No way!" Jiang He gasped, clicking his tongue. "What happened? Just like that, they disbanded?"
"The Soviet Union was impressive back in the day, but look what happened to it later; it all came crashing down. What's so strange about that?" Wang Zhongyu took a drag from his cigarette, smirking as he continued, "Actually, this is something I only learned after coming back."
