Chapter 229: Throat Cutting
"Of course, we can't go in hard; mutual destruction benefits no one," Wang Zhongyu couldn't help but roll his eyes. "The key issue is your sudden appearance. To be honest, RCA's research capabilities are indeed stronger than the Establishment's. Don't be fooled by that bald old man; he truly has a wide network of talented individuals. Whether it's the RCA department or the Establishment, almost all the elite talents conducting research in this area are his disciples!"
"…"
"Really, even I, a mere soldier, have heard of Old Yang's reputation. The prototype of the Infected Virus was developed by him and a few students!" Wang Zhongyu smacked his lips and sighed, "Knowledge is power; if you're not as good as others, you're simply not as good. When it comes to experimenting on you two, there's really no one else who can do it besides him."
"Then shouldn't you be nicer when talking to him? What if the old professor gets upset and takes it out on us? If he were to break an arm or a leg, we'd be so wronged!"
"He won't. Your value is evident; people like him don't have time for petty grievances. At most, he might give me a cold shoulder, but he wouldn't waste precious experimental subjects to vent his anger." Wang Zhongyu brushed off his pants and stood up. "You two should go rest over there for now. I'm going to check on the lines. We need to start the experiment as soon as possible; the power supply won't last long."
Jiang He felt overwhelmed and asked, "Who should we listen to? When will you be back?"
"Just listen to that old fellow; he's an expert in scientific research. Don't worry about me; I have plenty on my plate. I'll come back to pick you two up in five days." Wang Zhongyu patted their shoulders, providing them with some reassurance.
"It's a deal. Just be careful; I have a feeling these people don't have good intentions."
"Don't worry." Wang Zhongyu chuckled and called over a soldier guarding the Glass Workplace outside, instructing him to take the two to their designated room for a short rest.
Outside the building, the sun was shining brightly, casting a golden hue through the ventilation windows. From above, two blocks away, a dense horde of zombies was trapped outside makeshift fortifications, looking precarious.
After talking for quite some time, Wang Zhongyu felt parched and self-deprecatingly smiled before quickly heading toward the safety passage.
In the office building, there were few bedrooms. The Soldier and those from Black Ops mostly slept at their workplaces, having endured harsh conditions to become seasoned veterans, so there was little to complain about. As for the RCA leaders and researchers, who were unable to lift a finger or carry a load, they were mostly assigned to the former offices. Some large offices had single rooms with beds and bedding fully prepared; this building was originally an RCA branch, and basic living expenses could still be guaranteed.
The Soldier led the two into an office on the west side of the Glass Workplace, which had already been tidied up. The office was small, with mahogany desks and chairs taking up most of the space. A bathroom and a bedroom were open on one side, making it hardly distinguishable from a hotel room. The Soldier remained expressionless; after the two entered, he left and continued to guard the exit of the Glass Workplace. Jiang He initially wanted to ask when they would have a meal but found some simple food already laid out on the desk upon entering. There were also prepared clothes on the sofa. It had to be said that being able to manage these details in such an environment demonstrated the organization's considerable resources.
"Well, I'm at their mercy, and there's no other choice for us," Jiang He said as he sprawled on the bed, staring at the dim ceiling, a wave of helplessness washing over him.
"Yeah," Song Yao replied as she helped him take off his shoes, curling up beside him like a cat, resting her head on his not-so-strong chest. She sighed softly and said, "Originally, this was Sister An's destination; I never expected that we would end up here instead."
"Indeed, we've covered almost half of China in just a few months. Running on land, swimming in water, flying in the sky... we're finally close to our destination," Jiang He said as he wrapped his arm around the girl next to him, gently stroking Song Yao's back. He sighed and added, "I hope everything goes smoothly."
"Jiang He, do you think we'll survive?" Song Yao asked as she lay against his chest, her bright eyes looking up at him with an indescribable meaning in them.
"I don't know, but regardless of life or death, I won't part with you again," Jiang He exhaled deeply, holding her tightly as he uttered the most sentimental words of his life.

On the 105th floor of the building, adjustments were being made to the Spare Generator set.
Wang Zhongyu bit down on a straw while frowning at several RCA technicians who were sweating profusely as they worked. Unable to hold back, he asked, "How's it going? Is there a problem?"
"The voltage is unstable; this equipment is too old and puts a lot of pressure on the entire laboratory," Glasses Youth replied with a grim expression as he pointed at the flashing red and green lights on the testing instruments. "We don't know the specific testing process right now. If we could control electricity by zones, it might stabilize things somewhat."
"It's not easy to get an old machine like this," Wang Zhongyu said as he paced back and forth, feeling quite helpless. Power supply had always been a major issue; even spare generator sets were scarce. The capital had already become a Zombie colony; breaking through the CBD Zone to search for resources would likely require mobilizing troops to clear a path.
"I'll do my best. It would be ideal if we could share the pressure according to the instrument's operating procedures; otherwise, it's really going to be a struggle." The technician's brow was furrowed even more tightly than his, and the whites of his eyes were bloodshot behind the lenses. Wang Zhongyu knew that bringing this machine back was already a gamble, and these technicians had exhausted themselves working through the night to repair it. He understood their plight and felt no need to blame them.
"You all keep working on it. I'll think of another solution, but don't get your hopes up too high."
"Okay, understood."
Wang Zhongyu turned and walked into the safety corridor, frowning as he pondered what better solutions might exist. Just as he reached the corridor on the 106th floor, he looked up to see Old Yang pushing through.
