Chapter 230: For Whom the Bell Tolls
"What should we do with the remaining people here?" Professor Yang moved swiftly, quickly catching up to the assassin who had taken the lead. As he turned into the safety corridor, he spotted two bodies sprawled on the stairs.
"Wen Tao is handling it," the man replied, turning back with a grin that revealed a row of white teeth against his dark complexion.
Before Old Man Yang could ask another question, a series of thunderous explosions echoed from outside, shaking the high-rise building and sending tremors through the air.
"What is—"
"Boom! Boom!"
The violent blasts interrupted Old Yang's inquiry, and the sounds of chaos erupted outside the safety corridor. The man's expression changed as he urgently grabbed Old Yang and sprinted toward the rooftop.
The sudden explosions startled everyone; moments ago, the floor had been orderly, but now it was in complete disarray.
Jiang He and Song Yao rushed out of their room just in time to see the soldier who had led them there running toward them. He was anxiously speaking into his radio while waving for them to return to their room.
"Where's Wang Zhongyu?! What happened?" At that moment, neither of them could think about lying down calmly. The instant the explosions rang out, Jiang He realized trouble had struck again. Unfortunately, they couldn't see what was happening through the ventilation window in their room; they could only vaguely make out clusters of flames shooting up from across the building.
"I'm going to find the Vice Commander; you two stay in your room! Don't run around!" The soldier firmly followed Wang Zhongyu's orders, insisting that they stay put. Chaos was also erupting in the Glass Workplace across from them, with many Black Ops and supporting soldiers rushing out. The leaders returning to their offices wore expressions of panic as they continuously questioned the cause of the explosions.
It seemed that the soldier's radio was not relaying any useful information. Seeing the floor descend into chaos, he quickly unholstered two handguns and handed them to Jiang He, instructing, "Stay in your room and wait for news; don't run around! This is an order from the Vice Commander!" Without waiting for their response, he dashed into the Glass Workplace, joining several other soldiers in a huddle.
On the other side of the transparent glass, Yan Guofeng and American Guy Jones were in a heated discussion with a group of Black Ops. The earlier explosion had come and gone in an instant, but now the air was filled with the deafening sound of gunfire. Everyone seemed oblivious to what was happening, yet they all understood the implications of the gunfire.
Jiang He took a deep breath, silently reminding himself to stay calm. He and Song Yao turned away from the Glass Workplace and ran toward the large floor-to-ceiling windows on the other side of the building. Many Black Ops were already gathered at the window, their faces reflecting shock as they witnessed something extraordinary. The two pushed through the crowd and were immediately struck dumb by what they saw.
Wang Zhongyu had previously informed them that this building was located in a bustling CBD Zone. The Zombie frenzy had long since swept through the capital, and to keep the laboratory operational, Wang Zhongyu's team and part of the RCA Field Operations had set up a defensive perimeter outside the CBD Zone. However, Zombies were unlike living beings; theoretically, no barrier could halt their advance. Wang Zhongyu had tried using noise to lure them away, but with little success. This tactic worked for small groups or confined areas of Zombies, but it was ineffective in a busy urban area like the capital. The reason Principal Huang and his team managed to divert Zombies using a broken broadcast was that there were only a few Zombies gathered at that time, and aside from their small group, there were no other distractions.
The capital was different; it was densely populated even before the Cataclysm, which naturally turned it into a Zombie hotspot after the disaster. Earlier, RCA had managed to maintain operations here due to significant manpower and firepower, allowing this building to remain relatively safe. Moreover, one reason for choosing this high-rise was its natural defensive height. Back then, RCA's mobility allowed helicopters to take off without difficulty. Although Zombies would wander up the stairs, being on the 108th floor provided more room for defense, enabling them to intercept some Zombies outside while using firepower to ensure safety around the building.
Unfortunately, RCA had collapsed. If it weren't for an agreement with the Establishment, it would have only been a matter of time before this building fell to Zombies. Thus, the problem returned to square one: due to RCA's collapse leading to an early breakdown of defenses, a large number of Zombies that had been blocked outside surged into the interior of the high-rise CBD Zone. The speed and efficiency of the Zombie horde's attack were astonishing, and Wang Zhongyu's last-minute reinforcements lacked sufficient firepower to completely clear out the Zombies in the CBD Zone. They could only rely on the city's layout to build some defensive structures and use basic methods to intercept Zombies while relying on melee weapons to gradually weaken the attacking horde.
In simpler terms: RCA initially used bullets to carve out safe zones, allowing for broad stabilization of security in the CBD Zone; whereas Wang Zhongyu lacked sufficient personnel and ammunition and could only hold back while gradually pushing back the Horde with blades.
The difference between these two approaches was significant; one could quickly establish a secure area where defenses could be built, while Wang Zhongyu's method resembled patching up holes in a wall—slow progress that amounted to mere resistance. Therefore, Wang Zhongyu's five-day timeframe given to Old Yang was not just about power supply; external threats were also a major concern.
Ultimately, what needed to be conveyed was simple: Wang Zhongyu's painstakingly constructed barriers had crumbled.
What Jiang He and Song Yao saw before them at the floor-to-ceiling window was a scene of apocalyptic devastation.
From their vantage point on the 107th floor, they could see an international city once thriving now reduced to ruins. Even though its former glory had faded into memory, dilapidated buildings and waves of Zombies still interpreted this city’s past splendor in another way. Through the window, they could see parts of the CBD Defense Line interspersed among many buildings; however, these fortifications built with soldiers' lives were now engulfed in flames as thick smoke billowed from one defensive point after another—painting a grim picture of war.
Nothing is more heart-wrenching than watching land being submerged by rising waters; the CBD Defense Line collapsed rapidly. Between safe zones and Zombie-infested areas lay only a thin barrier that had now crumbled under fire and smoke. A dark tide of Zombies surged into every street and alley within the safe zone like an unstoppable wave. It was afternoon now; flashes of gunfire flickered inside and outside those streets—creating a stark contrast between those streets under Zombie assault and those behind collapsing defenses.
From Jiang He's perspective, it was only a matter of time before this aggressive horde reached their gates; soon enough, their crumbling defenses would be entirely consumed. Whether Establishment Soldiers or RCA Field Operations members—they no longer saw divisions among organizations at this moment; Zombies were their common enemy. If they allowed this Zombie tide to completely seal off their high-rise building, those trapped inside would have no choice but to await death. At that point, those who could would likely choose to end their own lives with a bullet; as for those who couldn't... they might jump from the rooftop.
