"Song Song Wine," Xiaofei stood alone in the corridor, holding a torch and glancing around, but there was no one in sight.
The wooden door of the dungeon was still open, and the dark entrance exhaled a damp, cold breath that added a chill to the already desolate warehouse. Xiaofei felt somewhat speechless about this peer leader; it had been said to go find a torch, but was there really a need to rush? It was pitch black down there, and waiting wouldn’t lead to death, would it?
Though she complained inwardly, she dared not voice her thoughts. With no other choice, Xiaofei lit the torch and brought it closer to the entrance, calling out irritably, "Hey!"
The sound echoed beautifully in the enclosed underground space, her clear voice drifting far away, faintly returning in circles.
However, there was no response.
Xiaofei found it strange; although it was dark below, it shouldn't have been impossible to hear her call. Just as she was about to descend the stone steps, she suddenly heard footsteps approaching from behind. Startled, Xiaofei turned around and said displeasedly, "Why didn’t you answer?"
Her words were cut short as she saw a tall Black man suddenly appear behind her. Her expression froze, and her body began to tremble involuntarily.
"Shh." The giant, towering over Xiaofei by two heads, raised a finger gently and smiled widely, revealing two rows of gleaming white teeth.
Xiaofei wanted to scream, but the oppressive aura emanating from the man rendered her voiceless. He wore a Jungle Combat Suit that clung tightly to his body, with various dark firearms hanging from his waist. In his hand was a dagger that glinted coldly, its blade pressed against Xiaofei's throat, raising goosebumps on her skin.
The man took the torch from her trembling hands and gestured with his chin behind her while speaking in a deep and clear Mandarin, "Go down."
Xiaofei's face turned pale as she bit her lip and nodded. She shuffled her feet downwards as a rush of wind followed behind her, soon engulfed by an unyielding darkness.
The dungeon door slammed shut. The smoke from the extinguished torch carried an oily scent that wafted through the darkness. Xiaofei felt someone grab her arm and twist it behind her; she felt cold metal snap around her wrist. Someone gripped the back of her neck and pushed her forward; Xiaofei's feet gave way beneath her as she seemed to be hoisted onto someone's shoulder.
"What do you want?" Xiaofei attempted to break the suffocating silence, but no one answered her question. The person carrying her breathed heavily as if they could navigate without any light at all.
Xiaofei closed her eyes for a moment; they finally adjusted somewhat. However, there was no source of light here. Even though things were no longer pitch black before her eyes, she still couldn't see anything clearly—only vague shadows seemed to follow behind. The journey wasn't long; the dungeon wasn't very big. When Xiaofei was set down, she tried to struggle to stand up but received a kick to her knee and stumbled down onto the ground.
"Is there anyone else?" A cold female voice emerged from the darkness.
"No," replied the previous deep male voice. "There are three guards outside the warehouse."
"Go guard the entrance," the woman commanded, and footsteps faded into the darkness, leaving the place once again in silence.
Xiaofei strained to see where the voice had come from. Before she could make sense of her surroundings, a soft click sounded, and a blinding beam of light shot toward her, illuminating her face.
"What a beautiful girl," the woman's voice carried a hint of surprise as she waved the flashlight, signaling Xiaofei to lift her head.
The harsh light stung Xiaofei's eyes, and she struggled to look away, only to find Song Jiu lying beside her, his face covered in blood.
As if sensing where Xiaofei's gaze fell, the woman shifted the flashlight to illuminate Song Jiu. "Don't worry, your boyfriend isn't dead; he's just unconscious."
Xiaofei didn't bother to clarify; all that remained in her heart was shock and fear. After days of being influenced by recent events, she had developed a certain admiration for Song Jiu. She believed that under his leadership, they might truly escape the control of the Zombies. However, the scene before her shattered her unrealistic fantasies.
Song Jiu lay with his eyes tightly shut, blood streaming from his forehead, its color as glaring as the Blood Plasma that had sprayed across the square that night. Xiaofei felt a deep sorrow; facing an opponent stronger than him, this man was just as powerless as he had been that night.
"Girl, tell me what happened at the camp," the flashlight beam fell on Xiaofei's face again. With her hands shackled behind her back, she could only lower her head.
"Why did they change the guards at the warehouse? Why is everyone here missing?" The woman continued to question.
Xiaofei's heart sank; there was no doubt that the Zombies had returned early. What was even more deadly was that they hadn't entered through the front door like before but had suddenly appeared in the dungeon.
"Why did the Zombies come back early? Why is it that today Song Jiu happened to be here?" Xiaofei didn't respond to the woman's questions; she herself had many doubts that needed answers.
A sharp sound echoed through the air.
Xiaofei collapsed against Song Jiu, a red handprint blooming on her pale cheek as blood trickled from her mouth.
"I’m asking you a question; what are you thinking about?" The woman's voice grew angry as she stood up and approached Xiaofei. Grabbing a handful of her long hair, she tilted Xiaofei's face upward. "Tell me what happened here."
Just as Xiaofei braced herself to speak through the pain, a sudden gust of wind swept past her. Song Jiu, who had been slumped on the ground, sprang up unexpectedly. Xiaofei barely registered what was happening; all she felt was a release of pressure on her scalp as the grip on her hair loosened. A dull thud followed, sounding like something heavy hitting the ground.
Xiaofei snapped back to reality and hurried over to the fallen flashlight, turning around to shine it in the direction of the sound. The moment the light flickered on, Xiaofei saw a dazzling mass of Golden Hair. Immediately after, its owner flipped backward and crashed heavily onto the steel cage, producing a piercing sound.
Footsteps echoed from a distance, and Xiaofei quickly called out, "They're coming back!"
Song Jiu did not respond. He exerted all his strength in an attempt to strangle the woman he had under control. However, the woman did not lose consciousness from the choking; instead, she felt a sharp pain under her armpit, followed by her arm losing strength. Before he could rise, a powerful kick struck his abdomen, sending him flying backward.
Ignoring the turmoil in his stomach, Song Jiu quickly propped himself up and lunged at the woman again, using the beam of Xiaofei's flashlight as guidance. He swung his fist with all his might. Yet, the woman illuminated by the bright light merely dodged his heavy blow with a slight movement. Before he could regain his balance, another wave of intense pain shot through his side as a pair of icy hands seized his throat, followed by a forceful knee strike to his stomach.
At that moment, the lookout returned. The sound of a gun being cocked filled the darkness, and Song Jiu wisely ceased his resistance.
"Don't shoot," the woman said breathlessly, seemingly surprised that Song Jiu had been pretending to be unconscious. She snapped her fingers, and several beams of flashlight illuminated simultaneously, converging into Bright Searchlights that enveloped Song Jiu.
As the lights brightened, Xiaofei finally got a clear look at their opponents. There were three people in total: one was a Black man she recognized from the warehouse, and another was a tall White Person clad in tactical gear, armed to the teeth with various weapons. The woman shook her hair and gestured for her companions to restrain Song Jiu before striding over and delivering a kick with her leather boot.
With his body restrained and unable to struggle, Song Jiu could only endure the woman's wrath as she unleashed her fury upon him. Each punch and kick felt as if they were shattering his insides; after just a few hits, he couldn't take it anymore. He coughed violently, tasting blood in his throat.
Xiaofei watched in horror and desperation; disregarding everything else, she cried out with a trembling voice, "Stop! I'll tell you everything!"
"My kindness has been mistaken for weakness," the woman said as she relaxed her stance and ignored Song Jiu, pointing at Xiaofei instead. "Come here."
Xiaofei dared not hesitate any longer and struggled to her feet to approach.
"Don't touch her; she has nothing to do with this," Song Jiu managed to force out through gritted teeth as he looked up at the Blonde Woman. "I killed your people; if you want revenge, come for me."
Song Jiu wasn't trying to be a hero; he understood now that he was far weaker than he had imagined against Zombies. In hindsight, Liu Yan had shown considerable sincerity; if it came down to a fight, he might not even be Liu Yan's match. The seemingly casual punches and kicks from this woman had nearly caused him internal injuries. He couldn't fathom how such a petite figure could possess such immense strength. It seemed like he had grasped her throat when in reality she had used her throat muscles to counter his attack.
He had been racking his brain for ways to fend off Zombies but never expected that someone would take him down so easily in this situation. It was wiser to concede; Xiaofei lacked any fighting ability and would likely suffer serious injury from just one of the woman's punches.
"You have no right to negotiate with me," the woman said sharply. Although she hadn't suffered any losses herself, her tone suggested she felt deeply wronged. Facing Xiaofei—who posed no threat—she showed no mercy; she kicked Effie's leg hard enough to bring her down to her knees.
"You're fucking torturing prisoners," Song Jiu muttered weakly. There were only three of them, and if the guards outside the warehouse could arrive in time, perhaps they could turn the tide. For now, he could only think of ways to buy time.
"You are not my prisoner," the woman replied, dragging Xiaofei by her hair toward another cell. The poor girl, with her hands cuffed behind her back, had no power to resist and could only cry out in pain.
"Hey, hey, hey, you’re bullying a woman," Song Jiu started to say, but then he fell silent. They were all women; he didn’t even know how to respond.
"Better worry about yourself," the two who were holding Song Jiu tossed him aside, clearly not taking him seriously.
One of them, a Black man, squatted down and patted his face with a smirk that was neither a smile nor a frown. "I should have killed you that night. You ungrateful bastard."
"Huh?" Song Jiu was taken aback and looked at him in confusion. "You must have mistaken me for someone else. Have you seen us before?"
"If it were me, after escaping from Zombie's clutches, I would cherish my life. But you didn’t," the Black man continued without answering, saying things that left Song Jiu baffled.
Before he could make sense of what was happening, a heart-wrenching scream suddenly erupted from the cell opposite—Xiaofei was crying out in agony.
Song Jiu's temper flared. He thought the woman was going to interrogate her alone, but it turned out she was truly capable of harming a fragile girl.
"Ah! Song Jiu! Help me! No!" Xiaofei's piercing screams pierced into Song Jiu's heart. Without any hesitation, he took a deep breath and charged at the Black man, smashing his head into the man's face. Seizing the opportunity, he pulled out the gun from the man's waistband and lunged toward the cell.
