The sound of gunfire echoed through the air, bullets striking the ground and sending sparks flying. The White Person realized something was wrong and hurriedly rushed over to support the Blonde Woman. They exchanged a glance, both swiftly drawing their steel knives, rolling away to create distance, and then sprinting off.
The Blonde Woman surveyed the chaotic camp, knowing it was completely over. Fueled by a burning anger to destroy everything, she snatched the White Person's assault rifle and chased after him.
Song Jiu had initially felt pleased with the camp's size, but now he couldn't find any joy, especially on the narrow path leading to the Vegetable Greenhouse. The gunfire behind them kept his nerves on edge. Most people had already fled to the warehouse, and under the night sky of Riverside Camp, shadows moved everywhere. The once glorious flames had vanished, leaving only chaos in their wake.
The zombie assault had utterly failed; the Brick Wall had fallen, and the breach was overrun. A tide of foul-smelling zombies surged in, their familiar roars echoing throughout the camp, spreading rapidly across the square. The bodies strewn about were insufficient for the overwhelming Zombie Tide to consume. After a brief pause, the zombies turned their attention back to the fleeing humans and stumbled after them.
The three zombies left behind noticed that their prey had vanished and realized that the camp was lost. They abandoned any futile resistance. The fierce battles earlier had left them exhausted; at this moment, they were no different from ordinary living people, unable to rely on their unique pheromones to mask their presence. They could only run for their lives.
Determined to take down the two fleeing figures ahead of him, E ignored the White Person's shouts and fired a few rounds to disrupt their escape. As they approached the warehouse, several figures suddenly burst out from within, unleashing a hail of bullets toward them.
Startled, Song Jiu and Liu Yan quickly rolled to the side but then saw Jiao Ziqian furiously sweeping his gun around. They scrambled back up and continued their flight.
The incoming bullets forced E to halt abruptly. Risking getting hit, he knelt down with his rifle braced against his shoulder, aiming at one of the escaping figures from the dungeon. However, Liu Yan anticipated this move; he pressed himself against Song Jiu's back, acting as a human shield and pushing Song Jiu into the warehouse.
Frustrated by his missed opportunity, E vented his anger by firing all his bullets at several militia members providing cover at the warehouse entrance. Sensing that their shooting skills were lacking, Jiao Ziqian called everyone back with a whistle as Song Jiu and Liu Yan returned to safety. They all made a beeline for the underground passage.
The zombies' slow movement remained a significant disadvantage. The remaining five zombies regrouped and urgently adjusted their strategy to push toward the warehouse door. They spotted several militia members recklessly transporting supplies and immediately opened fire, taking out a few heads.
Having already descended into safety, Song Jiu quickly grabbed Jiao Ziqian who was still intent on seizing supplies: "Stop! We need to retreat."
Reluctantly glancing at the mountain of supplies, Jiao Ziqian slammed shut the dungeon door and secured it with his knife before hurriedly joining the fleeing group into the narrow tunnel.
The five pursuing zombies were relentless; they blasted through the wooden door with gunfire and took advantage of their natural visual advantage to chase down that straight passageway. A barrage of bullets erupted forth, causing chaos once again.
Jiao Ziqian cried out in pain while clutching his rear end; he raised his gun ready to retaliate. Liu Yan and Song Jiu each grabbed him from either side and pulled him along as they turned into an artificially constructed passageway. Song Jiu asked, "Do we have anything that can collapse this tunnel?"
"There's not much ammo left," Jiao Ziqian said anxiously.
"What’s the situation outside the tunnel?" Song Jiu asked, still a bit dazed. He, along with Liu Yan and a few armed Militia members, were at the back of the group, occasionally firing off rounds to slow down the advancing Zombies.
"There are vehicles. I ran into Dream Fan too; a few cars should be able to fit us all," Jiao Ziqian replied, wincing as he felt the sting of a bullet wound in his backside. " Brother Jiu, what do we do? Where do we go?"
Song Jiu was at a loss; he had no idea where they should head. However, his question sparked a thought, and he quickly asked, "Did you see Hou Xiong in the dungeon?"
"Hou Xiong? Who's that?" Jiao Ziqian asked, puzzled.
"The idiot who got his mouth ripped apart by Luo Yu."
"Oh, I saw him. He just ran off with some women."
"Make sure to grab him later when we find a new place to settle down. We need to keep an eye on him."
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
The Zombies that had chased them out of the tunnel interrupted their conversation with a barrage of gunfire. Song Jiu and the others quickly scattered, retreating into the darkened tombs. They instinctively fired off single shots toward the tunnel entrance, taking advantage of the moment when the Zombies were momentarily hidden before turning to flee again.
At this point, the urgency had lessened compared to before. She wasn't foolish; under these circumstances, unless they had another rocket launcher to deal with them, it was impossible to hold onto these people. Since the enemy could enter the warehouse through the tunnel, it was likely that their vehicles parked outside had been taken over as well. Continuing to chase would only serve to intimidate; it wouldn’t deliver any real damage.
The Blonde Woman’s eyes darted as she called off the pointless pursuit. They halted when the enemy fired and moved forward when the enemy fled. This back-and-forth continued until Song Jiu and his group finally emerged from the damp and cold tombs, climbing up from the Pit.
In front of them stood a Heavy Off-Road Vehicle and three Pikachus lined up side by side, their headlights illuminating the dark and silent forest nearby, where countless insects flitted around the beams of light.
Luo Yu, Chef Jia, Dream Fan, and Effie anxiously peered out from the cockpit. When they saw Song Jiu and the others crawling out, their heads covered in dust, they all breathed a sigh of relief. Although there were no more gunshots coming from behind, Jiao Ziqian did not dare to slack off. He raised his gun and swept it toward the entrance of the hole, buying time for everyone to get into the vehicles.
Not many people managed to escape, but it still put some pressure on the four cars. The women squeezed into the compartments as much as possible; if they couldn't fit, they stood on Pika's vehicle. The militia members quickly adapted, trying every possible way to hang onto the cars, further increasing their weight.
"Get your ass back here!" One figure took advantage of Jiao Ziqian's group reloading their magazines and jumped back into the pit, startling everyone.
"Slow down! I forgot something!" Fat Man yelled as he dashed down with a flashlight in his mouth. Like a hungry pig, he plunged headfirst into the workshop at the entrance of the tomb, wiggling his backside as he squeezed inside.
Song Jiu almost choked on her breath. If it weren't for Fat Man saving Chef Jia earlier, she would have wanted to leave him behind. Reluctantly, she continued to expend firepower with Liu Yan and Ziqian toward the tomb passage to buy time for Fat Man.
"Damn it! This guy really values treasure over his life!" Jiao Ziqian cursed loudly, thinking that Fat Man was after the riches in the tomb.
The five of them hid behind the tomb passage, holding their breath as they listened to the conversation. White Person exchanged a knowing gesture with them and crept close to the circular opening at the base of the tomb wall. His position was just outside the line of sight of those in the pit, and since he hadn’t fired back, he remained unnoticed.
Fat Man emerged from the hole with a bright red face, not even glancing back. Clutching a bundle wrapped in oil paper, he strode toward the opening. "I'm coming!"
Song Jiu and the others suppressed their urge to kick him back down and halted their fire, reaching out to grab hold of clumsy Fat Man.
"Help me hold this!" Fat Man tossed up his bundle first before scrambling up from the pit. Just as he was about to make it out, his hefty body suddenly slipped back down.
"Are you ever going to be done?" Jiao Ziqian shouted in frustration. While cursing him out, he lunged forward and grabbed Fat Man's outstretched hand.
"Help me! My ankle got caught!" Fat Man cried out in panic, gripping Jiao Ziqian's hand tightly. If it weren't for Liu Yan's quick reflexes, Jiao Ziqian might have been pulled down into the pit too.
Footsteps echoed through the previously silent tomb passage, followed by several gunshots that created new holes beneath where they stood.
Song Jiu's expression darkened, sensing that the Zombie was closing in. He quickly crouched down and fished out a string of bullets from behind Fat Man. However, White Person was only stalling for time, lying flat on the ground and temporarily burying his head in the shooting blind spot like an ostrich.
The gunfire in the tomb grew louder; if they didn't leave soon, they would all be within the line of fire. Gritting his teeth, Song Jiu resolutely turned his gun towards Fat Man, who was still shouting for help, " Brother Jiu, save me!"
By the time they climbed up to the cave entrance, the overloaded Pika had already wiggled its way out of the shooting range, leaving behind two clear tracks.
The Blonde Woman's face was grim as she spat out a few curses in frustration. Raising her gun, she fired off a full magazine, sending branches and leaves scattering everywhere. There was no chance of catching up now, but at least she had shaken off the Zombie behind her. After frowning and contemplating for a moment, she seemed to have made up her mind. With a glare at her defeated subordinates, she stormed away from the pit.
The four Zombie lackeys hung their heads in defeat, muttering to themselves about how fate had conspired against them. They dared not show their emotions on their faces and pretended to look up at the towering flames in the direction of their camp before hurriedly following after the angry Big Sister.
In the desolate outskirts of Late April, the night wind carried a hint of chill as it weaved through the trees. The wind stirred up fallen leaves that danced over the ground littered with yellow shells, swirling lightly before settling into the deep pit. A piece of oiled paper shifted with the flowing sand and fell into the pit with a thud, kicking up a cloud of white dust.
The pale moonlight peeked shyly from behind dark clouds, casting a cold glow into the pit and illuminating half of a ghostly white face.
End of Riverside Fortress.
