Song Jiu had no choice but to evade, while Jiao Ziqian chose to charge ahead. The two paths led them into the unfolding drama, marking the beginning of a day-and-night assault, while the other four routes seemed somewhat indifferent.
"I think the other side must have stumbled upon a lucky break," Jin Bo said, smacking his lips as he analyzed with Pockmarked Girl. "Little Bear and the others just happened to run into it. Look at us, we've already entered the park, and there isn't even a lookout."
"Right? Who knows, we might even score a jackpot," Pockmarked Girl nodded in agreement. They had already driven into the north gate of the Industrial Park. The entrances of such parks didn't have real gates; there were just speed bumps set up a hundred meters before the entrance, along with an arch-shaped lightbox displaying plain metallic letters.
The words XX Industrial Park looked timeless, contrasting sharply with the surrounding low Industrial Zone.
There was a reception room at the entrance, and two rows of ordinary bungalows extended outward, all identical in style, providing living services for park workers—small supermarkets and eateries among other things. It was evident that the park placed great importance on greenery; while the lawns and flower beds had turned into wastelands, the street trees grew increasingly tall and robust. The concrete pavement was smooth, and along the way, it was quiet and still—no zombies or patrols as one might expect.
Pockmarked Girl opened her map for comparison and said, "There's a Cultural Square further ahead. The IT Industrial Park is located at the southwest corner of the Cultural Square. Let's head there first."
"Okay." Chef Jia focused on driving, her mind solely on the task at hand. This was her first time following a large group on a mission. Song Jiu had specifically arranged for Jin Bo, who was exceptionally strong in combat, to be in their group to make up for their lack of experience. Although she also had zombie traits, her combat abilities were ultimately weaker in comparison. Not wanting to hold back the team, Chef Jia was fully alert and didn’t dare to slack off.
The small vehicle cruised steadily along the dark road, appearing round and cute from a distance.
"What are those for?" Pockmarked Girl noticed something intriguing. Unlike Chef Jia's cautious demeanor, she remained as carefree as ever; among their group, she seemed to be the weakest but was in high spirits at this moment.
Jin Bo followed her gaze and saw a row of buildings resembling car washes by the roadside. They stretched over ten meters long and appeared to consist of about seven or eight units. The roll-up doors at their entrances were all down, clearly distinguishing them from other shops with wide-open doors.
"Probably storage rooms or something," Jin Bo said as he picked his nose and flicked out a booger, then wondered aloud, "Yao Yao and Qixi aren’t far from us; why haven’t they arrived yet?"
"Yao Yao's side is farther away," Chef Jia recalled vividly without needing to check the map; she knew all the routes like the back of her hand. She frowned and added, "They all have guns; if something happened, we should have heard something."
No sooner had she spoken than gunfire suddenly erupted from the west.
Chef Jia's expression froze; she thought to herself when she had become so unlucky that whatever she said would come true.
Jin Bo's expression immediately turned serious as he patted Chef Jia's shoulder reassuringly. "Don't worry about it; let's head to the IT park."
"Are you not going to help?" Pockmarked Girl had completely forgotten Song Jiu's earlier instructions. She excitedly pulled out the Steel Saw Blade, but the cramped space of the vehicle made it difficult to maneuver, nearly poking Jin Bo.
Jin Bo was sweating profusely and pressed down on the sharp blade, saying, "Don't panic, don't panic. Stick to the plan. Besides, this isn't a signal; our guns are all spread out, there's no way it's this concentrated."
Instead of calming Chef Jian down, his words only made her more anxious. After all, their gunfire combined didn't amount to this much. To the west were Song Jiu and Jiao Ziqian; they didn't know which team had run into trouble and could only hope they could safely avoid it without any bloodshed.
With that thought in mind, Chef Jian steadied herself and accelerated through the gap in the roadway, racing toward Cultural Square.
The Industrial Park was vast, but the gunfire in the quiet night clearly had a stronger resonance.
Wu Wentao's group was in a similar situation as Jin Bo's. They had come through a small residential area. Such large parks typically had accompanying infrastructure; many new buildings were constructed nearby, leaning against each other and gradually expanding the Industrial Park into an industrial district.
Although the name included "industrial," the park primarily focused on research rather than production lines. Moreover, the authorities had been promoting green and environmentally friendly concepts. Compared to many high-pollution biochemical project areas, this place was quite pleasant. However, the public was skeptical; most people preferred to believe word-of-mouth information rather than conduct on-site investigations. In some people's eyes, anything associated with industry or research must be a heartless enterprise spewing thick smoke that could cause cancer with just a few breaths.
As a result, property prices for nearby buildings plummeted. Despite being on the market for a long time, very few residents moved in except for wealthy individuals hiding their mistresses in luxury homes. Later on, renovations took place considering the large number of workers at the Industrial Park; many residential buildings were converted into apartments specifically for park employees. This change resolved many issues and gradually improved the popularity of the surrounding Living Area, showing signs of revival in dining, entertainment, and daily life.
However, this good fortune did not last long. The Infected Virus suddenly broke out, and naturally, the Industrial Park was not spared.
Wu Wentao's group encountered a horde of Zombies in the apartment complex. This was a minor inconvenience that couldn't be avoided. Accompanying him were two girls who had escaped from a tunnel; after numerous trials, they had proven themselves capable. Even though Wu Wentao was strong individually, he had a tendency to abandon others when things got tough. Therefore, he remained cautious throughout their journey, afraid of displeasing his companions and getting left behind. As such, Wu Wentao would say "go" or "stop," fully commanding their actions. He was quite satisfied with this arrangement; he preferred subordinates who followed orders. Although the two girls lacked combat prowess, as long as they listened to him, many troubles could be perfectly avoided. What annoyed him were people like Jin Bo who acted recklessly.
"Wu Ge, what should we do?" asked the Black-Haired Girl driving the car awkwardly. She knew his name but hesitated to call him directly; her stuttering attempt at addressing him felt uncomfortable.
"Don't panic." Wu Wentao focused intently on the Zombies wandering in the community while firmly gripping the girl's shoulder with his strong hand.
The girl felt reassured by his solid grip; it provided her with immense security amidst the chaos.
Cherokee quietly waited behind the artificial hill, watching as a small group of Zombies dispersed. A glimmer flashed in Wu Wentao's eyes as he said in a deep voice, "Charge through."
The girl driving the car sprang into action like a wound-up toy, her hands and feet moving swiftly as she pressed the accelerator. With the caution of someone taking a driving test, she sped forward, crashing hard into several Zombies standing in the middle of the road. A dull thud echoed as a Zombie slammed against the windshield, being violently thrown aside, leaving behind a puddle of thick Blood Plasma.
The windshield wipers swiped twice before coming to a halt, jammed by bone fragments.
"Keep going," Wu Wentao said calmly, ignoring the Zombies chasing from behind. He directed the girl to drive out of the community, crashing through the electric gate and barreling into the park with reckless abandon.
After driving along the tree-lined road for a while, Wu Wentao was somewhat surprised. He glanced at the map; Life Sciences Park was just ahead. The bronze-colored building stood out prominently against the night sky, with gilded characters displayed on one side. He motioned for another girl to run towards the main building.
The glass door was unlocked; with a gentle push, a dry scent wafted out.
Wu Wentao gestured for the girl to follow him closely. He rolled inside and swept his gun from side to side. In his black-and-white vision, the empty reception hall was covered in dust, and to the right, the elevator entrance was blocked by a sofa with a caution tape strung across it.
The girl appeared nervous, her hand trembling around her knife. Wu Wentao waved her over to check the elevator while he quickly crouched down to scan the stairwell. Just as he glanced up and down, he suddenly heard a sharp sound from the lobby and rushed out to see that the girl checking the elevator was stepping back in shock.
Seeing Wu Wentao approach, she swallowed hard, her gaze drifting toward the rusted elevator—the sound had come from within it.
Wu Wentao signaled for her to step back and took a few steps closer. He faintly caught a whiff of something putrid and tapped on the metal door of the elevator with his gun barrel. Sure enough, there were noises coming from inside—Zombies were trapped in there.
"Let's go," Wu Wentao said with some disappointment. This clearly wasn't an experimental site; places where experiments were conducted would have many researchers around. It was impossible for such safety hazards to exist within the building.
The girl seemed relieved and was about to leave when suddenly they heard gunshots coming from outside the courtyard.
The two hurried out of the building. The girl who had been watching over the car panicked; seeing Wu Wentao rush over, her hand involuntarily pressed down on the horn.
The sudden blaring of the horn was more jarring than the sound of gunfire. Wu Wentao hurriedly got into the car, and his eyes were momentarily dazzled as a cobalt blue Roewe sped past the front gate. Following closely behind were several dazzling lights from Golden Cup Vans, which swiftly disappeared from view.
Wu Wentao grimaced; inside the Roewe was Song Jiu. It seemed that misfortune had indeed found him. How did he manage to get chased by several cars the moment he entered the park?
"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry!" The young woman driving looked terrified; the horn had sounded at an incredibly awkward moment.
"Let's go." Wu Wentao ignored the trembling girl and pointed in the opposite direction where the cars had gone. "Head that way."
"Huh?" The driver was taken aback and asked in confusion, "Aren't we going to help?"
"Not for now. Let's go to the Pharmaceutical Factory."
