The air raid siren suddenly blared, its piercing sound cutting through the sky, spiraling upward as if to scatter the drifting clouds.
Su Lan momentarily lost her focus, but her expression quickly changed dramatically. The surveillance system shared a single line, and at that moment, everything else appeared normal on the screens—except for the city gate, which had plunged into darkness. It was clear that this was not a malfunction of the surveillance network; rather, the camera at the city gate had been destroyed. Coupled with the fleeting glimpse of a Zombie on the screen, unease settled in.
“Ming,” Su Lan turned to Ming Junwei, her face stern.
“It’s really not my fault,” Ming Junwei shook his head vigorously, waving his hands. Su Lan already suspected his motives for being there, and with this sudden turn of events, he felt utterly defenseless.
Fortunately, Su Lan was not so petty. She shot him a glare and spoke rapidly, “The plan to get you out of the city is postponed. You and that girl will stay at the Medical Office for now.”
“What about you?”
“I need to find out what happened.” Su Lan moved swiftly; before she finished speaking, she had already geared up. She opened a drawer and pulled out a sleek Smith & Wesson 6, tucking it into her pocket as she hurried to leave.
Ming Junwei stood up to block her path, helplessly asking, “Do you need help?”
Su Lan paused for a moment, a faint smile of relief spreading across her face. She nodded and returned to her desk, retrieving a Glock 18 from a locked drawer and tossing it to him. “You’re coming with me.”
“Got it,” Ming Junwei replied quickly as he checked the magazine and tucked the gun into his lower back. He had made up his mind to shamelessly ask Su Lan for some firepower before they set off. It was evident that this place was not lacking in weapons, while he himself was empty-handed—he couldn’t go unprepared for their journey.
Su Lan was meticulous in her actions. Before leaving, she made sure to take Ming Junwei to the Medical Office to ensure Yinuo's safety before gathering a team of Field Duty personnel to head into the city.
“Where are the others?” Su Lan noticed that there seemed to be fewer Field Duty members than usual and asked in confusion, “What about the Emergency Team?”
"Already on the way," the Field Officer slowed down, picking up team members along the route. He spoke in a low voice, "Half an hour ago, an abandoned car was found in the city. There were bloodstains inside. The Emergency Team has already gone there."
"The car?" Su Lan frowned slightly, anxious and confused.
The Field Officer's expression turned awkward as he stammered, "The abandoned vehicle, our Field Duty off-road vehicle."
"Oh, what's going on at the city gate?" Su Lan skipped over that topic and glanced back, noticing that Ming Junwei had been pushed to the back of the van, straining his neck to see past a burly man beside him.
"You and that girl wait for me at the Medical Office. I'll be back shortly," Su Lan said calmly. The Field Operative next to her was already moving toward the iron gate, where Zombies were still surging. If no measures were taken, the gate would surely not withstand the impact of the Zombies.
"Be careful," Ming Junwei replied and then asked, "Are you sending someone to take me back?"
"Yeah, don't worry about me." Su Lan smiled at him, turned around, and exchanged a few words with the Driver. The Black man simply nodded and jumped into the car to carry out his orders.
Before the business vehicle turned back, Su Lan knocked on Ming Junwei's window and repeatedly instructed him, "Stay put and wait for me to come back. Don't cause any trouble."
"Understood," Ming Junwei chuckled in response.
The Driver cast a curious glance at him but didn't ask any questions, focusing intently on his driving. Bored, Ming Junwei rolled down the window and took in the sights of the city as dawn broke.
Overall, this suddenly risen Lonely City was not lacking in any aspect. Although it wasn't large in scale, it had everything one could need. Whether in terms of architecture or layout, if they could follow Su Lan's plan and develop steadily over time, it wouldn't be a dream for this prosperous city to rise again.
Zombie City might truly create miracles and make history.
Ming Junwei lit a cigarette, letting the spicy smoke swirl around in his lungs before exhaling two columns of smoke through his nostrils. Home Sweet Home was no match for his own little nest; having seen both prosperity and devastation, Ming Junwei still felt that Roundabout was the most comfortable place for him.
Amidst the chaotic thoughts, a piercing explosion suddenly erupted. A runaway Heavy Off-Road Vehicle careened out from a side street, its body scraping against the high wall and sending sparks flying as it barreled toward the business car occupied by Ming Junwei.
