Half an hour after the car accident, the second barricade was breached by the Horde. Zombie City, standing desolate in the wasteland, could not escape its fate and was ultimately visited by its impoverished relatives. However, the Zombies did not manage to expand their gains further; although the city remained as it was, those living here were no longer helpless Survivors at their mercy.
The armed Field Duty quickly reinforced the breached intersection, while the Zombie Militia retreated to a secondary position. They set up numerous standard roadblocks in the streets to control the scattered movements of the Horde. With the firepower of the armed Field Duty, they systematically eliminated the starving Horde. After two hours of patching up defenses, they finally managed to temporarily contain the Horde's advance outside the city center.
Su Lan arrived at the hospital after the gunfire ceased. The expression on her face revealed that the current situation outside was grim. Although the Zombies did not show overwhelming superiority, Zombie City's passive defense had inevitably suffered due to their numbers. The personnel from both the Zombies and Field Duty remained fixed in number, while the Zombies continued to grow in strength. Aside from the Horde beyond the quarantine line, there was no going back. Ming Junwei lightly coughed and asked, "The person you are looking for is very important?"
Su Lan paused, her eyes filled with suspicion. "How do you know anything about it?"
"I don't know much for now," Ming Junwei replied with a smirk, then probed further, "Aso, who usually handles the Survivors you bring back from outside?"
"What do you mean?" Su Lan raised an eyebrow and gestured for the driver to step out before taking his seat herself. "Speak plainly."
"Alright then, I suspect that e has captured Yao Yao and her group again." Ming Junwei kept his gaze fixed on Su Lan's expression in the rearview mirror. Upon hearing this, her expression clearly changed, but unfortunately not in the way he had hoped; it was evident that Su Lan was completely unaware of this.
"What do you want to ask?" Su Lan sensed something off in his words and hesitated. "Are you really just here to rescue Yinuo?"
Ming Junwei smiled wryly at her response; speaking too much could lead to trouble. With issues arising continuously in the city and him always appearing on the fringes, if he continued down this path, Su Lan would likely start suspecting him of being involved. However, clarifying the situation was more important at this moment. If he remained silent just to clear his name, he might miss a chance to learn more.
After pondering for a moment, Ming Junwei said seriously, "Let's make a deal: you tell me why you're looking for that girl."
"What will you give me in return?" Su Lan's mind began to race; she had only just learned about Antibody's disappearance and had seen Antibody's photo in the lab. Kenny and Old Yang had rushed out earlier that morning because of it and were still furious about it now. How did Ming Junwei know about it when he had been in surgery two hours ago?
"More information," Ming Junwei replied as he pulled out a cigarette and lit it. He took a deep drag; pain flared subtly from his fractured ribs. After a moment's pause, he added, "I saw e spreading missing person photos; coincidentally, I recognized both people in those photos."
Su Lan's eyes twitched slightly as she lifted her eyelids and hesitated before saying, "Go on."
"The man is named Gaoyang, and the woman is Dong Yuhan, right?" Ming Junwei felt the car slow down suddenly. Before Su Lan could ask another question, he continued, "Interestingly enough, I witnessed Gaoyang die over a month ago. But now it seems we were all deceived—he has become a Zombie. And that girl..."
"Don't tell me that girl is also one of your people." Su Lan's expression grew serious as she slowly pulled the car over to the side of the road. Turning to Ming Junwei, she asked, "Xiao Ming, is this really just a coincidence?"
"Yes," Ming Junwei nodded.
"What do you mean?"
"Yuan An is our companion, and it truly is a coincidence," Ming Junwei said as he cracked the window open slightly and tossed out his cigarette butt. He continued earnestly, "Why did they break out together that night? Since she was captured again, what about the others?"
"I can't say," Su Lan turned her head away, avoiding Ming Junwei's piercing gaze. She bit her lip lightly and shook her head.
"What exactly do you want to do?" Ming Junwei read something unusual in her expression and felt that it might not be as simple as just an experiment. He pressed on, "Why can't you say? I'm sitting alone in your car, surrounded by your Field Duty members. Is this really necessary?"
Hearing Ming Junwei's words, Su Lan felt a bit confused. If that girl was indeed their companion, then why couldn't he figure out why they were looking for her?
"Are you familiar with her?" Su Lan hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Is it just living in the same camp, or...?"
"Companions, you should understand," Ming Junwei replied.
"What do you know about her?" Su Lan avoided directly addressing the issue. It seemed that Ming Junwei was unaware that Yuan An carried the Antibody. However, what Su Lan didn't realize was that their understanding of the Antibody was only the tip of the iceberg.
At this point in their conversation, even someone as dense as Ming Junwei began to sense something strange. He had seen the Gobi Desert testing site; with a laboratory of this scale and the involvement of Kenny and Professor Yang—two big names—it was clear that their concern wasn't just about an experiment; it had to be related to the Antibody.
But An Zheng's Antibody was clearly with Huihui. What about Guan Yuhan?
Had they made a mistake?
Ming Junwei fell silent. If there was an error regarding information from the Gobi Desert, then the more he said, the more likely he would expose Huihui. On the other hand, if Song Jiu and his group had all been captured, then the matter of the Antibody would essentially be half-exposed as well.
"You only captured Yuan An?" Ming Junwei did not answer Su Lan's question, frowning as he asked, "What about the others?"
"They only brought her back. I don't know about the rest," Su Lan said, her gaze dimming. If what Ming Junwei said was true, the fate of the others was uncertain. Given e's usual methods, the chances of a total loss were higher.
Ming Junwei was stunned, leaning against his seat for a while, struggling to find the right words.
"This Yuan An carries the Infected Virus and the Antibody." After much contemplation, Su Lan decided to be honest. Kenny and Old Yang had yet to reach a consensus on this matter; Kenny still insisted on destruction, while Old Yang firmly disagreed. It all depended on who found Yuan An first.
"Impossible," Ming Junwei coldly spat out three words.
"What?" Su Lan raised an eyebrow, realizing that Ming Junwei was not completely unaware of the situation regarding the Antibody.
"Yuan An cannot be carrying the Antibody," Ming Junwei gritted his teeth, preparing to take a risk.
"Why do you say that?" Su Lan turned around, staring intently at Ming Junwei, trying to glean some insight from his expression.
"Because the real Antibody belongs to someone else."
At the Launch Site, in the command center.
He hurriedly left the oppressive conference room, ignoring the strange looks from the Field Duty, and fled outside into the sunlight, taking a deep breath of fresh air. Kenny was truly furious today; within just two hours, he had asked about the whereabouts of the Antibody six times. The usual stoic demeanor had vanished without a trace, replaced by an almost frantic urgency.
The last time he had exploded like this was three years ago when Su Lan had disappeared without notice. Now it was because the Antibody had suddenly gone missing.
He regretted his carelessness deeply, cursing himself for being so negligent as to entrust such an important task as handing over the Antibody to Gaoyang. But then again, how could he have anticipated that something like this would happen right under his nose? Even though he knew that Gaoyang's character would lead to trouble, how could something as simple as running errands and driving go so wrong?
The Emergency Team narrowed down their search area; they had already interrogated two captured survivors who claimed they had never seen either Gaoyang or Yuan An. According to their coerced testimonies, these fools had merely stumbled upon abandoned vehicles in an alley. Cross-referencing with external Security data confirmed their identities as one of the escapees from last night’s incident in the compound, with no significant background.
Despite not finding any direct clues about Guan Yuhan's whereabouts, e had not come away empty-handed. At least one thing was confirmed: Yuan An and Gaoyang had not entered the city center. The location where the car was abandoned was not far from the high wall outside the Launch Site. Those Survivors had driven the vehicle into the urban area, misleading the Field Duty search direction.
e felt a surge of frustration; her already cold expression seemed to freeze over. The Field Operative beside her was timid, afraid that saying the wrong thing would provoke her anger.
"Where could she be?" e pondered, perplexed. She was well aware of the city's layout and had searched all possible hiding spots. She had checked surveillance footage from the previous night at monitored locations and had released photos, but there had been no feedback. How could two such conspicuous individuals simply vanish without a trace?
She sat in the Heavy Off-Road Vehicle, pressing hard on her temples, sensing that she had overlooked something.
Knock, knock, knock.
The Field Operative appeared outside the vehicle, urgently tapping on the window.
e's expression darkened as she pressed down the window. "What is it?"
"Gaoyang has been found."
