The ship was not moving slowly; on the contrary, as darkness approached, it had increased its speed. Yet, it still failed to navigate around Newfoundland Island.
It felt like a relentless demon, always surrounding us, no matter what we did. The ship turned and turned but remained trapped in this sea.
As the sun set, the sky was painted with brilliant red hues, reflecting off the deep blue waters and sparkling beautifully. However, none of us had the heart to appreciate it; instead, we all wore serious expressions.
Everyone stood on the deck, and Gu Chen looked at Brother Luo, asking him for our exact location.
Of course, he meant a specific location, not just somewhere near Newfoundland Island.
Brother Luo's face turned pale as he picked up the radio and asked Hou Guli for confirmation. Suddenly, his expression grew even graver.
"We are at latitude 41°48' North and longitude 50°14' West," he said weakly. The radio slipped from his hand and fell to the ground, fear etched across his face.
His words made our faces turn even paler because we all understood what those coordinates represented.
The Titanic sank in the Atlantic near Newfoundland Island, and while various accounts online differed regarding its exact location, they generally pointed to this area.
There was no doubt about it. As darkness approached, we had not only failed to distance ourselves from Newfoundland Island but had instead found ourselves right here.
Could this all be mere coincidence?
It was clear that it was not; no one on the ship could deceive themselves.
Despite our massive vessel speeding through the day, we had not escaped this area. Such strangeness was proof enough.
At that moment, I felt an ominous premonition. After dark, things might not remain as peaceful as they were during the day; something far more terrifying could happen.
The feeling was incredibly intense, and I believed it wasn't just me; Gu Chen and He Si must have felt it too.
"The sky is getting dark. Let's head back to the cabin," Gu Chen said gravely, his gaze sweeping over the sun that was gradually disappearing on the horizon.
After saying that, he took another look at the shimmering sea, sighed, and started walking away. However, as he turned around, he paused for a moment and reminded us in a heavy tone, "Remember, after dinner, go to sleep. Don't wander around; it's best not to leave the cabin."
I nodded, and He Si did the same. We all sighed helplessly before heading into the cabin.
Inside the cabin, all the necessities were available. Following Gu Chen's advice, after dinner, we all stayed inside the cabin, too afraid to step out onto the deck, worried that something terrible might happen.
To ensure everyone's safety and prevent any accidents, Gu Chen even insisted that we all squeeze together in the living area of the cabin to take a nap, gathering everyone in one place.
I understood that this was his way of expressing concern.
As night deepened slowly, the sea seemed particularly calm. Sitting in a chair in the living room, leaning back without a hint of disturbance, I felt drowsiness gradually creeping in.
Before I knew it, I had closed my eyes and eventually fell into a deep sleep.
But this sleep turned into a nightmare.
In my dream, I saw many people. I couldn't make out their faces, but I could sense their presence as if countless eyes were watching me. The feeling was so real; it was as if they were right beside me.
Suddenly, I saw a shadow of a person.
It appeared to be a foreign man adrift in the icy sea, clinging to a piece of debris while continuously calling out someone's name.
“Ruth Ruth Ruth”
The name echoed softly, quickly reaching my ears. It felt strangely familiar, as if I knew this person.
But just as I was pondering, he suddenly turned around. He seemed cold, his face pale as death, and his deep blue eyes were covered in frost, yet they were fixed intently on me. He continued to mumble that name.
I could hear him clearly; he was still calling out that name that stirred something within me.
“Ruth”
It was obvious that this was a woman’s name, but who was she? And why did this foreign man keep shouting her name?
Suddenly, as I was lost in confusion, he seemed to become enraged. His expression twisted into something fierce as he lunged toward me.
The shock of it made me gasp, and I sat up abruptly, opening my eyes to find that it had all been a dream.
Yet at that moment, I was drenched in sweat. As I opened my eyes, Gu Chen, Brother Luo, He Si, and Mingyue also awoke, only Mu Yan remained awake beside me, her gaze fixed on me.
Seeing me awake, she said, “You had a nightmare; you were sweating profusely.”
I nodded, noticing the damp tissue in her hand, feeling a surge of gratitude.
At that moment, the eyes of Gu Chen, He Si, Brother Luo, and Mingyue were all on me, their faces filled with shock and a hint of fear.
"What... what is happening?" I couldn't help but ask.
"Did everyone have a nightmare?" He Si said.
As soon as he finished speaking, Mingyue nodded, and then her gaze fell on Gu Chen, who also lightly nodded in response.
This only deepened the fear we felt inside.
Then Mingyue's next words shocked me even more. She looked at us and calmly uttered a name: "Ruth."
"Ruth."
In an instant, everyone's faces turned pale.
It was clear that we had all experienced the same dream, which was both unbelievable and terrifying.
Just then, a scream of extreme fear suddenly came from the ship's cockpit.
"Not good, it's Hou Guli's voice; something has happened to him!"
Upon hearing that voice, Brother Luo immediately panicked and rushed toward the ship's cockpit.
"You all stay here; I'll go check it out," Gu Chen said before quickly following after him.
But at that moment, aside from our fear, an uncontrollable curiosity surged within us. Without thinking much, we disregarded his warning and followed him.
Before we even entered the cockpit, we saw Hou Guli rush out with a face full of fear.
“Hou Guli, what happened?” Brother Luo asked loudly as he quickly approached.
“Dead, dead people, there are dead bodies everywhere on the sea,” Hou Guli murmured, finally managing to say something after a long pause.
Upon hearing this, Gu Chen's expression changed dramatically, but he was the first to rush inside. He Si and I exchanged glances and without hesitation followed him into the cockpit.
Mu Yan and Mingyue trailed closely behind me. Brother Luo stood frozen for a moment at Hou Guli's words, but seeing Hou Guli darting out like a frightened rabbit towards the deck, he shouted again, “Hou Guli, damn it, stop! Don’t go out!”
As he yelled to stop him, he chased after Hou Guli.
When we entered the cockpit, we looked through the front glass and were stunned into silence. Our expressions froze in horror as our pupils constricted.
Just as Hou Guli had said, there were indeed dead bodies everywhere on the surface of the sea, densely packed.
They floated on the water; some had their heads above the surface while others seemed to be lying on unknown debris, their bodies covered in white frost.
But it was those pairs of eyes that were particularly haunting. They seemed to pierce through the cockpit glass, staring directly at us and sending chills down our spines.
