At five in the afternoon, after winding through countless villages, we arrived outside the house where President Cai's parents lived. The house was made entirely of wood, constructed from purpleheart, a type of timber that had a deep purplish-red hue. It was coated with a layer of clear varnish to ensure the wood's longevity. The deep purple-red color, covered in varnish, appeared somewhat dull and lifeless; this was my first impression of the wooden house.
Miss Wang said, "There is no one inside the wooden house now. President Cai convinced his parents to stay outside for two days, which means we only have two days to handle this matter."
Senior Zhang, who rarely spoke, asked in confusion, "Are you really going to join us?"
Miss Wang nodded and smiled. "Both Xiao He and I will accompany you three masters throughout. If you need anything, just let us know. This is also President Cai's intention." Xiao He referred to the driver.
"That's nonsense; this isn't a game. You aren't practitioners of Taoism and won't be able to help us at all; you'll only distract us. You should find a hotel nearby and come back in two days," Senior Zhang said unusually sternly.
Hearing Senior Zhang speak, Master Xiao couldn't help but interject, "I say, senior, it’s not as exaggerated as you make it sound. More people means more strength; even if they can't help, ensuring their safety shouldn't be an issue. Besides, this arrangement must have its reasons since it was made by President Cai. Why go to such lengths to obstruct it?"
I looked at Senior Zhang, somewhat puzzled. This situation could be serious or trivial, but President Cai's parents had lived here for so long without incident, and the caretakers were all fine—just startled. Why did he think Miss Wang and Xiao He were so dangerous? His attitude seemed excessive. I remained silent and quietly observed how things would unfold.
Senior Zhang said, "They are safe not because there is no danger here but because President Cai's parents are present. If I'm not mistaken, it likely relates to their fate. Now that they are not in the house, do you think it's safe?" Senior Zhang spoke with such seriousness that it left no room for doubt.
Upon hearing this from Senior Zhang, Master Xiao ceased to argue further. Such claims were subjective and lacked definitive proof; while I had never encountered anything like it before, there was also no evidence to dismiss it entirely. The complexities of metaphysics were profound; with our limited understanding, we couldn't draw any firm conclusions.
Miss Wang glanced awkwardly between me and Master Xiao. I said, "Let's proceed as the senior suggests. Miss Wang, please call President Cai and explain the situation." Upon hearing this, Miss Wang nodded and stepped aside to call President Cai.
Taking advantage of this awkward pause, I pulled out a compass and began measuring the twenty-four mountain directions of the house.
Feng Shui orientation involves twenty-four mountains; it's not simply about the eight cardinal directions of east, south, west, north, northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest. Many people think that marking these directions on their floor plans is sufficient; however, this approach can be quite inaccurate. Even if drawn precisely, there can still be deviations that might lead to significant errors. Therefore, I advise friends that if you're not working with a reliable Feng Shui master and are uncertain about your layout's orientation when seeking advice online about auspiciousness or misfortune, it's best not to trust everything blindly. To ensure accuracy, the best approach is to invite a Feng Shui master to assess the site in person.
The feng shui of this wooden house is quite remarkable. In 2014, the Year of the Wood Horse, the house faces the Eight Movement Dog Mountain Dragon Direction, which is a rare auspicious configuration among mixed orientations. However, achieving such a prosperous setup in a mixed orientation can be very dangerous. If there is even a slight deviation in direction or if the compass is not accurate, it could either lead to an unfavorable position or fall into the Void, both of which are ominous. If a fortunate person occupies this mountain direction, they will not only enjoy wealth but also have benefactors throughout their life. If it is a mountain dragon, wealth will come swiftly. This is what is referred to as "evil," as the saying goes, "the more evil, the faster." However, swift fortune can also lead to rapid downfall; with the cycle lasting only twenty years, this house has a very short lifespan.
There is a fitting saying regarding this mountain's feng shui: "Mixed orientations often bring calamity, unlike the Eighth Period of Xu Chen." Both sides are ominous directions; carelessness may invite unspoken disasters. A fortunate person residing by the mountain and water will see silver trees blooming in abundance. Unfortunately, good fortune does not last long; once twenty years pass, it becomes hard to escape misfortune.
This principle of shifting feng shui is something I have always emphasized. No matter how prosperous a feng shui location may be, it has its cycle of decline; it's just a matter of how long that cycle lasts, and this wooden house has a mere twenty-year cycle.
When Miss Wang returned from her phone call, I put away my compass. It is impossible to accurately determine if this Xu Mountain Chen Direction house has any deviations from outside. To measure accurately, one must enter the house.
After Miss Wang returned, she smiled and said, "President Cai agreed to Senior Zhang's suggestion, so Xiao He and I won't accompany you anymore. However, we will stay in the county town; if you need anything, just call me, and we will rush over immediately."
Senior Zhang nodded without speaking and stepped into the wooden house. Master Xiao and I followed closely behind. After Miss Wang opened the front door of the house, she left with a parting remark: "All the doors inside are unlocked except for the bedroom of the elderly couple."
Once inside the house, I discovered an unexpected world within. Various precious antique wooden furniture filled the space; however, these pieces seemed more expensive than comfortable. The living room was spacious and equipped with all sorts of appliances, which clashed somewhat with the rustic style of the furniture. On either side of the living room were two doors: on the right were a bathroom and kitchen, while on the left were a study and a bedroom that appeared simple in decor—likely meant for a nanny or servant. The layout in Xu Mountain Chen Direction also had specific rules: left brings life while right brings death; thus according to this principle, the right side should not be used as a bedroom. The layout on this floor was indeed accurate.
On the left side towards the back of the living room was a staircase leading to the second floor. The second floor also had a large hall and four rooms; one of these rooms contained a large bathroom with an expansive massage bathtub that did not feel cramped at all. However, there was an unsettling chill in that room. Yet it wasn't too unusual; bathrooms are typically places where dirt accumulates within a home and are influenced by their overall environment.
After inspecting all the rooms and confirming my earlier guesses about their positions from my hotel room, I did not find anything particularly out of place. The three of us regrouped in the living room where Senior Zhang said, "We haven't found anything yet; for any substantial breakthroughs, I think we'll have to wait until tonight. We'll stay in the nanny's room and see what happens."
I nodded and took out my compass again to check directions. Master Xiao remarked, "But there’s only one small bed in the nanny's room; how can three people fit? I think Liu the Boss and I should stay in that room upstairs where President Cai stayed before. You have more experience dealing with these matters; if anything happens tonight, you can handle it on the first floor while Liu and I take care of things on the second floor. Whoever resolves their issues first can help out."
"That works," Senior Zhang immediately replied with an eager tone as if he was keen on this arrangement or perhaps intentionally trying to provoke Master Xiao's opposition. To be precise, Master Xiao had been outmaneuvered by Senior Zhang.
After saying this, Senior Zhang walked toward the nanny's room while adding, "I'll head back to my room now; just shout if you need anything."
Master Xiao saw Senior Zhang return to his room and then patted me on the back while I was measuring the direction. "You're looking at feng shui again," he said. I ignored him and continued focusing on the compass. Three minutes later, I confirmed that the orientation of this Xu Mountain Chen Direction house indeed had some deviation. This deviation was problematic; instead of yielding a hexagram, it directly resulted in "Void."
Void, in terms of reality; death, in terms of existence. In BaZi Astrology, Void is an important factor in determining the prosperity or decline of the day stem, and its role in feng shui is even more significant. It can be understood as "real void with death." "Real void" means that this feng shui situation looks good but is merely superficial and empty. "Death" needs no explanation; it literally means there is a deadlock. This deadlock does not imply that the people living inside will die, but rather that this situation attracts wandering souls and spirits, making it a favored place for lonely ghosts. Therefore, I suspected that the haunting in this house was likely due to feng shui issues.
When I shared this thought with Master Xiao, he casually replied, "What you’re saying doesn’t really matter. Even if this is a nourishing feng shui site, we can only drive out the ghosts inside first. As for the orientation issue being a feng shui problem of the house, that's not really our business. However, you could mention it to President Cai separately and make a little profit."
His last six words almost swayed me, but I still felt it was the same issue and shouldn’t require two rewards. I told Master Xiao, "Let’s see how things go tonight. If the Spirit God here isn’t resolved, no matter how we adjust the feng shui of this house, it won’t help. The Spirit God has been here for quite some time already and has turned this place into a residence rich in Yin Qi. Since that's the case, it falls within our scope of work."
Master Xiao nodded, clearly accepting my viewpoint. After tossing out a casual "Let’s go, put things away first," he headed upstairs without looking back. After checking the compass again and confirming that the deviation indeed existed, I sighed and turned to follow him up the stairs.
