The Spirit God can sense human fear, so when we feel scared, it's best to control ourselves and tell ourselves that we are not afraid. Alternatively, we can recite the Courage Spell I mentioned before to bolster our courage. It's important not to dwell on our fears. If there are no Spirit Gods around, that's fine, but if there is one, especially a mischievous one, it might just pop out to scare you, which could send your soul running.
Old Master Xu clearly sensed my fear. He spoke in a tone devoid of any emotion, "You don't need to be afraid; that old fellow isn't around here. He's guarding his remains. I can't hold on much longer and can only tell you this much. I need to go rest now. Thank you for being willing to help me..."
Hearing this, I put away my fear and slowly turned my head. Old Master Xu's spirit had gradually transformed into a nearly transparent shadow and vanished in the blink of an eye. Seeing Old Master Xu disappear left me feeling a bit lost. After all the effort I put in that night, the issue remained unresolved. However, at least I had some clues now. I was certain that Old Master Xu was indeed remorseful about the matter concerning the Japanese Soldier. Unfortunately, this certainty lacked evidence, so outwardly, nothing seemed to change.
Once a person relaxes their tightly wound heart, their body becomes extremely sensitive to external sensations. The cold wind blew fiercely, making me shiver uncontrollably. I realized that it had been a long time since I took off my down jacket; I was only wearing a base shirt and a knitted sweater, making me feel as if I had stepped into an ice cave on this cold winter night. Shivering continuously, I quickly put on my down jacket and extinguished the incense on the ground before running down the mountain.
It’s worth mentioning that while running down the mountain, I encountered a Ghost Wall. Ghost Walls are quite common in rural areas and are nothing special. They are easy to break through, and most wall spirits don’t harbor any ill intentions; they’re just playing around. With something weighing on my mind, I ignored the playful wall spirit. After breaking through the Ghost Wall, I continued running down the mountain and headed towards Second Master’s house since it was the closest place for me to rest.
Upon arriving at Second Master’s house, a little black dog barked incessantly at the door; it was unclear whether it was welcoming or warning me. Ignoring it, I knocked vigorously on Second Master’s bedroom door while shouting, "Second Master! Open up! Open up!"
The lights inside turned on, and the door opened amidst Second Master’s curses. Seeing me panting heavily at the door with flushed cheeks, he asked in confusion, "What happened? Didn’t you go handle Ghostly Affairs at Xu Family? How did you end up here? Were you chased by that old man from Xu Family?"
I replied, "Not at all! The matter isn’t resolved yet; I'm just borrowing a place to stay for the night since it's too late to return to my master’s place. Sorry for bothering you, Second Master."
Second Master opened the door wider and said, "Come in quickly; it’s freezing out here."
Once inside, Second Master poured me a glass of hot water and remarked, "If you haven't finished yet, your skills can't compare to your master’s. What have you been learning all this time? You’ve taken so long over such a small matter without resolving it. Tell me what’s going on with Xu Family."
Feeling somewhat embarrassed by Second Master's words, I explained everything to him. After pondering for a moment, he looked up at me and said, "Sounds tricky; should we wait for your master to return before discussing this?"
I replied, "My master won’t be back until the day after tomorrow. I'll take another look tomorrow night to see if I can resolve it; if not, waiting for my master’s return won’t be too late."
"Alright, but you need to be careful. I can't help you with these things. You have to be sure of yourself. If you can't handle it, just run away; don't force it," Second Master said.
"Do I need you to tell me that? I'm not stupid. I'm exhausted, so I'm going to bed. Goodbye." I couldn't resist my mischievous nature. Second Master kicked out at me, but I was prepared and he didn't even touch the hem of my clothes. Laughing, I slipped out through the side door of Second Master's room and headed to the guest room to sleep.
That night, I caught a chill and ended up with a cold. When I woke up the next morning, I felt groggy. Second Master noticed I was sick when he called me for breakfast and made me a bowl of ginger syrup to drink. He advised me to rest well at home after eating and then left on his own business. He mentioned he needed to explain some things to the Xu Family.
By the time Second Master returned in the afternoon, I was feeling much better. He didn't call for me and went straight into the Stove House to start cooking dinner. The aroma of food wafted through the air, prompting me to get out of bed. Aside from a bit of coughing, I felt mostly fine. It's strange; when I catch a cold or fever, it comes quickly but also goes away just as fast. I never take medicine or get injections. That evening, the wind wasn't strong, and the moonlight was just as bright as the night before.
To my right in the small clearing were two large stones forming a right angle, completely sheltered from the wind. Lighting red candles would be convenient there. Being able to light red candles made it easier for my Call of Souls ritual. From Old Master Xu's words, I learned that the soul of the Japanese Soldier had been guarding his remains nearby, which meant it should be in this area. Old Master Xu even affectionately referred to this Japanese Soldier as an old buddy, so this Japanese Spirit shouldn't be too fierce.
In the deep winter night, especially in this remote forest, even if I wanted to Call of Souls, precautions were necessary. Who knew if there were other wandering Spirit Gods around? If there were other old buddies nearby, how many could show up if I called out? I certainly wouldn't be able to handle them all.
I took out my compass and carefully examined the area around the small clearing for a while. There were some disturbances, but they were unstable; I couldn't determine how many spirits were nearby—maybe one or several. The compass readings were quite vague at that moment; after all, my experience was limited—I was just a third-year college student.
Since the compass wasn't helpful, I decided to apply Cow Tears to my eyes. It felt dry and completely different from eye drops. After adjusting to it, I opened my eyes and looked around. There were no visible Spirit Gods in the vicinity; only in the distance did I see a Spirit God wearing Funeral Garment drifting by before disappearing from sight—it might have been someone who had just died in a nearby village and was on its way somewhere. I chose not to pay it any mind.
Goodnight everyone! Thank you to classmate Rongxin Guangwo for the diamond reward!
