The room was not small. After about four or five minutes of work, I started to feel a bit tired. While I continued, I asked my Master, "Why hasn't it shown itself yet? How long do we have to keep this up?" Turning my head, I was surprised to see my Master casually smoking with Master Zhang at the corner tea table.
My Master flicked the ash from his cigarette and then picked up a compass from the table, saying, "Don't rush. It will be here soon. If you can't even handle this little task, how will you manage bigger things in the future? Keep going, don't stop."
"I never said I wanted to do big things!" I complained, feeling a bit disgruntled. Then I resumed my labor, striking at the thin wisp of incense ash in the air. Xiaorou, standing beside Master Zhang, covered her mouth and chuckled lightly, saying, "Do you want me to help you?"
I replied, "No need, no need! I've got plenty of stamina; it's just that this task is rather dull. My Master said it would come out soon. So there's no need for your help." After saying that, I quickened my pace and struck harder at the thin wisp of ash. Come on, with me here, there's no way I'd let a delicate girl like you take on such a physically demanding task.
After another two or three minutes of vigorous effort, the thin wisp of ash began to solidify. The Spirit God slowly materialized, dressed in a black Miao Family Attire without any headpiece. Its face was no longer pale but marked with deep red and purple streaks that looked just like the ones painted on it. Its features remained intact despite the marks left from my strikes. It stood there expressionless in one corner of the room, staring blankly at me.
As the Spirit God gradually took shape, my Master tossed his cigarette butt into the ashtray and took out a talisman from his Cloth Bag. He walked over and said, "You finally showed yourself," before beginning to chant the Soul Binding Spell. As he chanted and approached the Spirit God, he finished just in time to slap the talisman onto its chest. At the same time, he pulled out a small copper mirror from his pocket and drew several soul-collecting symbols on it: Soul Guiding, Soul Collection, Trapped Soul—all in one breath. My Master skillfully captured the Spirit God into his copper mirror and placed another talisman on top before binding it tightly with red thread and tossing it into his Cloth Bag. Honestly speaking, if it were me doing this task, it would take at least half the night.
Once he secured the soul, my Master muttered to himself, "I'll prepare a proper Ritual for you when we get back; whether you can be transcended depends on your own fate."
Was that really it? This seemed too easy; what a waste of my trip here! But upon reflection, if I hadn't come, my Master would have had to do all this himself—how could that old body handle it? Thinking this way made me feel that this trip was indeed worthwhile.
After my Master finished speaking, Brother Zhou woke up. Aside from looking a bit pale, he showed no other signs of distress. Upon seeing me, he suddenly exclaimed loudly, "Hey Liu Laodi! Master X! What are you doing here?" Xiaorou quickly explained everything to Brother Zhou. He hurriedly stood up and bowed deeply to both me and my Master while repeatedly thanking us.
Seeing that everything was settled, I spoke up: "Master, Master Zhang, since we've wrapped things up here, let's go eat! We haven't eaten much today and after all this exertion I'm practically starving."
My Master smiled and nodded in agreement. "Little Brat! All you think about is food! Alright then Old Zhang, I'll dispel Zhou's evil energy first and then we can go eat while discussing how to handle this matter."
Wait—what matter? Didn't we just finish everything? My Master's words left me puzzled again. What did he mean by discussing how to handle this matter? Was our purpose for coming here not just for this? Turning back to look at my Master revealed him chanting a spell over Talisman Water. Not wanting to interrupt him further, I glanced over at Master Zhang with confusion still lingering in my mind.
Master Zhang noticed the confusion in my eyes and chuckled, saying, "Xiao Liu, things haven't even started yet. This possession is just a small matter; there are more serious issues to deal with. Didn't your master tell you?"
I shook my head and then nodded, feeling reluctant to admit that this old man hadn't informed me. He had previously told me that before taking action, one should first make a judgment. Now that it was his turn, he didn't tell me what was going on. I thought this would be a completed task, allowing me to retreat unscathed.
Brother Zhou downed the Talisman Water in one go, and his complexion gradually improved. After thanking me, he walked over with a grin. Once close, he patted my shoulder and said, "Today it's my treat! Order whatever you want to eat or drink; it's all on me. I heard you can hold your liquor, so let's have a good time."
Hearing Brother Zhou's words made me forget my grievances about Master not informing me of the situation. I chuckled and patted Brother Zhou back, saying, "Alright! Find an authentic local restaurant with down-to-earth flavors. I'll enjoy a few drinks with our elders while you watch since you're not fit to drink yet. Hahaha!"
There’s something particularly exhilarating about facing someone of similar skill in a duel. You both draw your swords, and just as you’re about to begin, you suddenly tell him he can't use his sword and hand him a cloth instead. He has no choice but to accept it.
Brother Zhou had just been exorcised and wasn't fully recovered yet. He couldn't drive, and at that time, I hadn’t even finished my driving test. Master Zhang needed to chat with my master and couldn't drive either, so the task of driving fell to Xiaorou. Initially hesitant to get in the car, I soon realized she was quite capable; she handled the manual van with remarkable steadiness. The acceleration and braking were smooth enough that if we lit an incense stick inside without opening the windows, the smoke would likely rise straight up.
When we arrived at the dining place, it was a quaint farmhouse courtyard with a decent environment and private rooms—perfect for our group to share ghost stories at night.
"Old Zhang, is that Tsuchiya far from here?" After all the dishes were served and no one else entered the private room, Master asked this question. I was somewhat puzzled by what Tsuchiya was; I didn’t quite understand it but figured it was best to listen when elders spoke.
"It's located on a remote mountain near Alliance Village in Shangbao Township. That Tsuchiya has been abandoned for many years. We from Corpse Chasing often travel by night on less traveled paths; during the day we look for places to rest. There aren't many righteous graves left now; we can't travel during the day anymore and have to find caves or abandoned temples like Hermitages," Master Zhang replied.
"Are you sure there are many Spirit Gods inside that Tsuchiya?" Master asked again.
What did he mean by many Spirit Gods? When I heard Alliance Village mentioned earlier, I found the name intriguing; it sounded quite powerful. Upon hearing about many Spirit Gods, I felt a jolt of realization—no wonder Brother Zhou's possession issue was resolved so quickly; it seemed it wasn't much of a problem at all. I glanced at Brother Zhou; he was intently fiddling with the white liquor cup on the table.
Master Zhang raised his cup to clink with Master's glass and said, "I'm quite certain that those of us in this line of work may not catch ghosts or collect souls, but we've certainly encountered our fair share of spirits and monsters. Naturally, we have our judgments about these matters. Moreover, there should be more than just ghosts there; people are likely raising spirits as well."
"Wait a minute, I heard that Gu needs to be raised in living animals or humans. Why would someone raise Gu in a place full of Spirit Gods? The purpose of raising Gu here is obvious; you reap what you sow. If someone claims they are raising Gu here for medicinal purposes, I won't believe it. There must be some kind of conspiracy behind this. After spending so much time with my master and hearing countless stories of deceit, my way of thinking has unconsciously changed. I tend to look deeper into things now.
"Are you talking about raising Yin Gu?" My master, who has seen and learned much, asked something I had never heard before.
That was the first time I had heard of Yin Gu. My curiosity got the better of me, and I couldn't help but ask, "Master, what is Yin Gu? It sounds quite sinister."
My master chuckled softly and said nothing, instead looking at Xiaorou and saying, "You can ask Miss Xiaorou about this matter; she is a Gu raiser."
So that's why Xiaorou seemed a bit strange to me; she was a Gu raiser. However, she was only in her twenties at the time, so she probably wasn't a powerful Gu Master. Still, she must know much more about Gu than I do.
The third update is out. To be honest, I'm really tired, but seeing everyone's votes makes it all worthwhile. I didn't sleep much last night while working, so I need to rest early today. This will be the end of the update for now; good night everyone. Thank you to the Mechanical Pianist for the 8888 Iron Coins; I'll add an extra chapter just for you tomorrow."
