"Since that's the case, fine, let's resolve your director's issue first." After saying this, I walked out of the shrine. My time to see clearly had come; I couldn't see much anymore, as long as I confirmed that the Little Spirit wouldn't do anything to the director.
I lit a cigarette, pondering what this Little Spirit meant and why it was so attached to the director. Could it be that they had some sort of connection? The more I thought about it, the more it felt off. If there was any connection, the director wouldn't be so scared. Was the Little Spirit simply finding the director amusing? Unable to figure it out, I decided to wait until the director finished filming before understanding the situation better.
Waiting was torturous; I sat there from around seven until eleven without any sign of stopping. I felt a bit resentful. The director could have given me a heads-up if he knew it would take so long. If I had known earlier, I would have found something else to do instead of just sitting there bored out of my mind.
Finally, around eleven-thirty, they wrapped up. Xiaolin came out with the director, and I hurriedly stood up to greet them. After all, this was Xiaolin's hope; I couldn't treat it lightly.
Once outside, the director exchanged a few words with those around him, essentially telling them to wrap things up themselves as he had something to attend to. After saying that, he scratched his back and muttered something under his breath. When he saw me approaching, he switched to a smile and said, "Sorry for keeping you waiting, Little Master Liu. How about I treat you to a meal?"
I smiled back and replied, "Then I'll let you treat me."
"No need to be so formal; it's nothing," he laughed heartily and walked towards a small sedan. I glanced at Xiaolin behind him and whispered, "That little girl is still following him." Xiaolin merely pouted without saying anything.
Just as we were about to walk over, Li Da Ye rushed ahead to the director's side, and we followed suit. Li Da Ye called out, "Director! When are we filming that money-burning Lens? I've got some urgent matters at home that need handling."
The director smiled when he saw Li Da Ye approaching while pulling out his car keys. "Li Da Ye, feeling better?" Li Da Ye nodded slightly and said, "I'm fine, Director. About that money-burning Lens..."
The director waved his hand dismissively. "No need to rush, Li Da Ye. We can postpone the Lens for a bit longer. If you have something urgent, go take care of it first. It won't matter when you come back; we can always film the Lens later. I've got some matters to attend to now; we'll talk when I'm free." He handed the car keys to Xiaolin, who entered the driver's seat while I opened the door and got in as well. The director didn't pay any more attention to Li Da Ye.
My gaze remained fixed on the director's back; I wanted to see if that Little Spirit would follow him into the car. There was nothing unusual behind him, but I did notice a small action from Li Da Ye—when the director got in, he subtly reached out as if trying to block something behind him without any warning. I smiled slightly; it confirmed that Li Da Ye could indeed see that Little Spirit.
As Xiaolin started the car, she asked the director where they were going. The director replied that we were heading to our usual spot. Xiaolin exclaimed in surprise, and the director added, "What? That place is great! The environment might be a bit lacking, but the food is excellent."
In the car, I asked the director, "Did you feel particularly itchy today, especially at the back of your neck? Like something was brushing against you?" The director responded, "Yeah! How did you know? It's strange today; I've been feeling itchy all over. But I'm allergic; if I eat seafood even a little bit, I'll get itchy. I had some seafood for lunch because I was craving it; that must be why. Why? Does Master Liu think there's something else going on with my itchiness?"
I chuckled and said, "No, no, I was just asking. By the way, Director, I heard that you captured a ghost during filming last night. Is that recording still around? Can you show it to me?"
The director replied, "Yes, I have it. I was so scared after seeing it that I made a copy of the recording and deleted the original footage. I don't want anyone else to know about this terrifying incident. If everyone finds out, they probably won't dare to film anymore. I'll show it to you after dinner when we get back to the hotel."
I said, "Haha, who says they wouldn't dare? Didn't Li Da Ye ask you to film? He was there too; even if he didn't see the recording, he must have felt something, especially since he got hurt."
"You're right! I hadn't thought about that. Now that you mention it, I'm starting to doubt things. Li Da Ye usually isn't this anxious; why is he particularly interested in filming the burning of Joss Paper this time?" The director began to ponder my words.
Suddenly, Xiaolin, who had been driving, interjected, "Director, I think there's something off about Li Da Ye."
Upon hearing Xiaolin's comment, the director responded in confusion, "What do you mean there's something off? He's worked with me for many years; there shouldn't be any issues." Xiaolin was momentarily at a loss for words and didn't know how to respond.
I said, "Li Da Ye does have issues; your suspicions are part of the problem. As for his intentions, just like he said himself—he wants us to film the burning of Joss Paper as soon as possible. Director, did you notice what Li Da Ye said earlier?"
The director asked, "Didn't he just ask me when we would film the burning of Joss Paper? He mentioned he had something at home and needed to finish filming quickly."
I replied, "No, he didn't say 'burning Joss Paper'; he said 'burning money.' Think about it—would a normal person confuse Joss Paper with money?"
"Wait... did he really say that? I didn't catch it." The director seemed not to grasp the significance of my statement and merely expressed his confusion.
Xiaolin added, "Yes, he definitely said 'burning money...'” Before he could finish his sentence, he suddenly slammed on the brakes. The sudden inertia threw us forward. They were fine since they were wearing seatbelts in the front row, but I wasn't buckled up in the back and slammed hard against the front seat. Immediately afterward came a series of honks from behind us, expressing frustration at Xiaolin's abrupt stop.
"Xiaolin! Are you even capable of driving? Damn! I thought we were going to crash!" I couldn't contain my emotions and shouted loudly.
The director remained silent, his face cold as he glanced at the front of the car and then at Xiaolin. Xiaolin turned his head and said, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I just suddenly thought of something. Brother Liu, you wouldn't be saying that Li Da Ye is a ghost, would you?" As the director assessed that everything was fine and was about to reprimand Xiaolin, he was taken aback by Xiaolin's words and exclaimed, "Little Master Liu, you can't be serious! I've known Li Da Ye for over ten years, and he's always been fine. How can you say he's a ghost?"
I rubbed my forehead and replied irritably, "When did I say Li Da Ye is a ghost? What I meant is that there's a ghost on him. Xiaolin, for crying out loud, if you can't drive properly, just let someone else take over. You nearly scared me to death with that sudden stop."
"Isn't that the same thing? How did you figure it out?" The director ignored my complaints about Xiaolin and quickly asked.
Xiaolin apologized again and continued driving forward.
"Being a ghost and having a ghost on you are not the same thing. The former refers to the ghost itself, while the latter means being possessed by a ghost. How can they be the same?" I answered the director's question and relaxed against the back seat. That sudden brake really startled me; for a moment there, I thought my youthful life was about to end right there.
"So you're saying Li Da Ye is possessed by a ghost?" the director asked next. I replied, "Pretty much. It's not a big deal; I can help sort it out."
Hearing my response, the director sighed in relief but then questioned, "Wait a minute, if he's possessed by a ghost, then who was the one who broke the cup in my room last night?"
