At ten o'clock in the evening, a hospital is still a hospital. While the nightlife outside was just beginning, the inside was gradually quieting down. The bustling corridors were becoming serene, and despite the doors being closed, the glass panels allowed a glimpse of the activities within. The Imposter Yincai did not emerge to trouble me as I had imagined; there was no sign of it at all.
Compared to when I had finished Dinner, I had recovered significantly. Not only could I get out of bed and walk, but I could also manage a few push-ups. This level of recovery was quite satisfying to me. In a good mood, I picked up the Oiled Paper Umbrella that had been resting by my bedside and said to Master Xiao and Xiaolin: "You two go by the door and keep watch for me. I'll call it out to ask about the situation."
Master Xiao turned to Xiaolin and said, "You go keep watch; I'll stay here to protect Brother Liu."
Xiaolin wanted to argue but couldn't find a reason, so he suppressed his frustration and walked over to the door, standing guard.
I opened the Oiled Paper Umbrella and drew a soul-reviving spell on it with a Hand Spell. Moments later, Liu Bi appeared before me and Master Xiao. Its complexion was poor, a stark contrast to when I had last seen it, clearly due to its fierce struggle with Imposter Yincai. It looked at Master Xiao in confusion, then at me, before saying, "Hey, Brother Liu, you're awake! That's great. Uh, who is this ugly creature?"
"Dammit." Master Xiao was furious and slapped a talisman on Liu Bi's back. Liu Bi shivered as its newly formed body began to flicker in and out of existence, seemingly in pain.
I quickly tore off the talisman from Liu Bi, crumpled it up, and tossed it into the trash can. I turned to Master Xiao and said, "Are you crazy? Why do you keep using talismans on it?" After that, I glanced at Liu Bi and added discontentedly, "And you too—what are you talking about? This is Master Xiao, he's also a Taoist priest."
Liu Bi chuckled and bowed to Master Xiao, saying, "I was wrong; please forgive my bluntness, Master Xiao." Seeing this, Master Xiao smiled back and said, "It's alright; we wouldn't have met if I hadn't hit you. Now we're friends. You're a spirit raised by Brother Liu, which means you're also under my care. Let's not be so formal."
"Don't say that; what do you mean I'm raising it? We're all friends here; stop speaking without thinking," I replied, feeling helpless about Master Xiao's tendency to speak his mind.
Feeling frustrated, Master Xiao fell silent. To him, Liu Bi was merely a Spirit God. Humans and spirits were fundamentally different; they couldn't be friends. At least they belonged to two distinct worlds of yin and yang. However, I didn't tell him about Liu Bi's secret—it wasn't an ordinary Spirit God. Its existence seemed to contradict the separation between humans and spirits; after all, it had possessed Li Da Ye, who had suffered no harm. Moreover, it had emerged from the Underworld, carrying many secrets along with that Oiled Paper Umbrella. Most importantly, there was also Mu Xue.
Thinking of this, I quickly asked, "Liu Bi, how is Mu Xue? The other night I saw her get thrown far away; she isn't seriously hurt, right?"
"Mu Xue is fine," replied Liu Bi. "It's just that all the recent efforts in Nourishing the Soul have gone to waste; she's back to her initial state—very fragile."
"That's good to hear. What about you?" I noticed that Liu Bi didn't look well either.
"Liu Bi" chuckled lightly. "As for me? I've wasted a year of nurturing. But fortunately, the umbrella is still here."
Master Xiao interjected: "You two—one person and one ghost—are chatting so warmly! If there's something to discuss, just say it instead of dragging this out like some unresolved human-ghost relationship."
Just as I was about to respond, a sudden wave of pain struck my head like a hammer. My consciousness began to dissolve at an alarming speed. Grabbing my head tightly, I crouched down on the floor.
"I can't believe you think the umbrella will always be there. How naive."
You will never understand the feeling of saying something that isn't what you intended to say, yet hearing it clearly with your own ears. A voice that comes from within you, but isn't truly yours—it drives you a little mad, like a person with split personalities expressing someone else's thoughts in their own voice.
Master Xiao quickly sensed that something was off and took a step toward the bedside table, retrieving the Peach Wood Sword from his Cosmic Bag. He swiftly chanted the Exorcism Spell as the sword cut through the talisman. Without hesitation, he struck my Fontanel with the sword.
The blow from Master Xiao was painful, but it instantly brought me back to my senses. He quickly grabbed the hard lump on the inner side of my thigh, cursing, "You bastard! If you have the guts, come out and face me instead of hiding in his body!"
After hearing Master Xiao's words, I couldn't help but smile wryly. Face him one-on-one? If it hadn't been injured the night before, we wouldn't stand a chance even if we teamed up. Now that I was awake, I said to Master Xiao, "Alright, enough with the tough talk. We'll head back home early tomorrow morning."
Master Xiao nodded and plopped down on the bed, propping himself up with the Peach Wood Sword. He was clearly fuming; perhaps he couldn't accept such blatant provocation, especially since it was being carried out through my body.
Liu Bi began to tremble as soon as Imposter Yincai spoke. His already pale face turned even whiter, clearly indicating that he had suffered quite a bit.
I asked Liu Bi, "What happened after you possessed me that night?"
Liu Bi replied, "I was anxious at that time and didn't think things through. I tried to project it out, but it was futile; not only did I fail, but I also got beaten up badly by it. I ended up making you faint too—I'm sorry, Brother Liu."
I reassured him that it was fine and told him to take care of himself. "Don't worry; I'll keep the umbrella close. I'm going back to find my master to deal with this Imposter Yincai and let My Master see Mu Xue for some ideas."
Liu Bi nodded without any hesitation and transformed into a gust of cold wind that slipped into the umbrella. Looking back at Master Xiao, I saw he had already stood up from the bed and found a small bowl. He poured in half a bowl of Cinnabar and added some ink before decisively cutting his finger with a knife. He let several drops of blood fall into the mixture and stirred it evenly. As he worked, he said, "I can't create this thing myself, but I can find a way to keep it calm and stop tormenting you."
I nodded and thanked him.
I didn't understand his method, but it was indeed effective. Since Cinnabar is toxic, he didn't draw symbols directly on me but instead on my hospital gown. While drawing and chanting spells—unique practices from his sect—I didn't bother trying to comprehend them; I simply let him do his work on the gown.
He spent over half an hour drawing when Xiaolin outside could no longer wait. He walked in and saw us still busy and said, "I'll head back for now; I've got some things to do tonight. I'll bring breakfast for you both in the morning."
I said, "Well, we will be discharged tomorrow morning and then head back to Hunan."
Xiaolin responded with an acknowledgment and left.
Half an hour later, Master Xiao finished his writing. The bowl of talisman liquid was completely used up, and the originally blue and white striped hospital gown was now covered in deep red talismans all over. He picked up a bottle of water and gulped down more than half, saying, "I've drained my saliva reciting these. With this, you should be able to sleep well tonight, but you can't lie down yet; you need to wait until these dry."
"Okay, thank you for your hard work, Master Xiao. Get some rest early; we’ll prepare to go back home tomorrow," I replied.
Master Xiao chuckled and said, "I was waiting for you to say that. If anything comes up tonight, just call me." After saying that, he pulled out the bed next to mine and plopped down onto it. The small bed creaked under his weight.
In just a few minutes, loud snores filled the room.
I held back my fatigue and didn’t get into bed yet; I needed to wait for the talismans on my gown to dry first. Looking at Master Xiao sleeping soundly beside me, I thought how fortunate I was to have such a friend who was always there when needed. Despite his slightly unattractive appearance, being overweight, having a lower IQ, and being somewhat single-minded in his actions, he seemed like a decent guy. I also considered that if he ever met a girl who didn’t mind those things, I should help him make a connection.
